Pigs are an awesome addition to any homestead. But pigs are heavy feeders, and can be quite expensive to get to market weight.
In today's episode we interview Dave and Jodi from White Bison Farm, and learn how they raise Idaho Pastured Pigs and save big time on feed bills by raising their grazing pigs on pasture, and feeding them fodder through the long Wisconsin winters.

I love that you are falling down the IPP addiction interviewing both Jodi and Kirstin who are both amazing breeders!

And what many people don’t realize is that while the IPP breed will forever be indebted to Shelly for creating this breed, the breed is equally indebted to Jodi for her work with the registry and buying up most of Shelly’s stock, without that, this breed most likely would have faded into obscurity or extinction instead of the thriving young breed it is today with hundreds of breeders all over the US and soon into Canada and Europe!

Great interview, good video. A little surprised to see this on your channel after watching your video "The Truth About Pastured pigs." Contrast is surprising

Received my fodder system couple weeks ago but I don’t have enough knowledge of which grains are best overall for a plethora of farm animals. Chicken, goat, chicken, duck, horses, cow. All I lack is a 🐪 it seems on this farm.

this is gonna sound crazy but pigs can get a significant portion of their diet from.... cow manure! its fermented grass basically so more digestible than grass or hay. its a great way to feed during winter when theres no pasture. got 3 young pigs living off one jersey right now no grain.
@dontfit6380
@dontfit6380 3 года назад
Are you feeding your Jersey any grain? I have 8 kunekune in with 4 jerseys. They don’t touch the cow crap. I also had hopes they would clean up rabbit crap but no such luck.

If fodder is a grass not a grain, and they are on pasture....isn't that like giving grass and supplementing with grass? I'm thinking that the sprouted grain is more easily digestible baby grass. ? More platable? 4 lbs probably started as 1 lb of grain? So they are eating 2-3 lbs grain cost/day per pig?

@hillockfarm8404

Sprouted barley, about 7 days old. Can go up to 10 days for some of that in herbivores for more non digestable fibre to help pass the feed through the intestines at the right speed to optimise absorbtion of nutrients. If you feed it as a supplement you don't need to, then 7 days is optimal, the needed fibre then comes from other feeds.

Fodder is any type livestock feed. Could be hay, oats, wheat, corn etc. it could even be tree leaves. I feed a lot of tree fodder from poplar, willow and mulberry trees. Basically it’s anything you give them that they haven’t grazed
@dawnyoung9898
@dawnyoung9898 Год назад
Fodder is a term that has been changed as of recently. It used to be a general term, but now people use it to refer to sprouted grain.

@@dawnyoung9898 In my area fodder is stored feed that isn't grain - so it's hay, silage, or minority feeds like raked autumn leaves kept dry for feeding, or anything else along those lines. Sprouted grain is still treated as grain feeding because that's how it's stored.
