The piece at the end… no matter how much of a mistake it was, you made it exactly the way it needed to be, to visually demonstrate to others what not to do and how to avoid or fix the mistake. Really awesome how that one “unwanted” piece actually makes your video more useful for us and for you as a “teacher” 😁 Love your videos and energy 💞 thank you so much!!

I’ve also gotten into the habit of keeping a small spray bottle of rubbing alcohol to wipe and dry each piece of glass with as it makes the copper tape stick much better. Also if I ever have to patch a small area, I wet a towel with the alcohol and quickly wipe the already applied tape. Otherwise while soldering, the patch of tape tends to float away with the hot soldering

Rachel....you are a goddamn gift. Thank you so much for all of these videos. I've been trying to teach myself how to do stained glass, but there's a lot to it. Your advice is very helpful! Plus, you seem super cool and like someone that would be cool to hang out with. Hope you're doing well!

Great tip about grinding down the edges of the mountainous glass! At 9:16 I can totally sympathize with you. I keep my "piece of shame" aka POS, where I can see, so that I don't make the same mistakes over again. Keep those videos coming! You're a great teacher!

This was a really helpful video! I just started a four week class and we're supposed to think about what we wanted to do for our second project. I have the adorable Polish movie poster version of Godzilla as my phone background and thought, "Godzilla!" but then I was looking at it and realized spikes might not be so beginner friendly for cutting and grinding. I hadn't even thought about how difficult they might be to foil. Although that would be outside bits and those don't need foil. Anywho, the next class is when we'll be soldering and I feel like how well I've foiled and how well the soldering goes will kind of dictate what project I'd do next. Just been enjoying your videos to help me prep for classes and kind of work ahead to better understand how much would be too much for my second project. 😊

Awesome tips & awesome examples... of what to do and also what not to do Rach.... So that's how I get the foil to not split around the concave cuts... also just thinking from your examples, I need to do the same thing with the convex cuts... Also like the fact that you 1st burnish the edges, then on the sides next... good tip on grinding down the edge of the texture pieces... LOL "Take the edge off"... Great video...! Would like to see a video on your patching the foil...

Hi Rachel, another great and useful video, especially for doing the concave edges. I am doing your monstera leaf at the moment as a practise piece and have ended up with some splits doing the concave edges, so I might start gain with them and try your suggestion of warming the foil up.

Hello, VERY helpful video. What copper foil tape do you buy? When I am doing my concaved edges the tape always seems to split even if I spend ample time warming and slowly stretching the tape. Thanks so much!!!!😍

Hey love your channel! I am a very beginner and something that is frustrating me is that when I solder, my joints come out a lot thicker than my edges because the foil width is essentially doubled from the two touching edges each being foiled. Am I doing something wrong? Would love any advice, thanks!
@sunbearglasscraft8065
@sunbearglasscraft8065 2 года назад
Hi Jodi! No, you're not doing anything wrong. This is completely normal and theres a few things you could do to work around this if it's really bothering you. 1) use hobby came or 2) apply normal foil to inner parts of the glass (I'm assuming you're using 7/32) and then apply larger (1/4") foil to the outer edges. If you decide to do this, youd have to make sure you overlap the foil/start the 1/4" foil on the inner solder lines. I hope that makes sense!

This has nothing to do with foiling but how do you package your pieces for shipping and what typically is a shipping price? Do you charge for shipping as well ?
@sunbearglasscraft8065
@sunbearglasscraft8065 2 года назад
For smaller pieces, I sandwich the glass between two sheets of cardboard, then wrap with bubble wrap. I use bubble mailers for these, and for larger orders I'll do the same sandwiching but package in a box. I do charge for shipping and generally charge about 50 cents over what it actually costs me to ship to account for packaging. Through Etsy, shipping my bubble mailers on average cost around $3.75 for shipping while boxes cost around $10. These are all general and it changes case by case thoug!

When I posted this video I honestly didnt know it had holes 🤣 I got the caddy from my grandpa and he stored his foil out of the holes. It wasnt until I went to superglue to foot on that I saw the holes and felt like a total idiot, hah!

Why do you need to foil your pieces? Couldn't you just soder the pieces?
@sunbearglasscraft8065
@sunbearglasscraft8065 3 года назад
The copper foil is what the solder sticks to, otherwise the solder just rolls off the glass. If the solder does "stick" to the glass, it's from small amounts of suction and comes off very easily
