The 2022 Fokker Scourge Fly-In was held Sept. 3 & 4, 2022 at the Golden Age Air Museum in Bethel, PA. The main attraction of the show was three Fokker triplane reproduction aircraft with original WWI rotary engines. A fourth Warner-powered triplane reproduction was also featured. I documented the weekend with video, still photos, and interviews.
Come along for the ride here in part 1, and don't forget to check out parts 2 and 3 also!
Part 2: • Fokker Scourge Part 2
Part 3: • Fokker Scourge Part 3

I'm little confused about the video title. "Fokker Scourge" was July 1915 to about early 1916 referencing to the Fokker Eindecker that had the synchronized interrupter that allowed the machine guns to fire between the propellers giving it the advantage over British and French aircraft. The Fokker Dr.1 didn't enter service until 1917. I still enjoyed this part one. I'll watch part two later. Nice video and I love WWI military aviation. Thank you for posting sir

The Fokker scourge was when the Fokker E1 was introduced into service in mid 1915. It lasted about 5 to 6 mounts before the French and British cough up with the introduction of aircraft like the Nieuport 10.

When I was nine I was very into Peanuts, Snoopy and WW1 aircraft and aces At that time (1966) Revell offered in 1/72 scale a very complete series of all the WW1 fighters and I built them all Got my private pilot ticket in 1977 and always thought how cool it would be to fly these aircraft Id prefer tbe Fokker D7 I think No tourque from a nasty rotary blowing oil everywhere

I loved the Snoopy v Red Baron reference. It was the Great Pumpkin/ Charlie Brown Halloween tv special that started it. And then, around that same time, there was the film- The Blue Max, starring George Peppard, who did some of his own flying. In the film, their were three Fokker triplane replicas. One was red, because Peppard's character had an encounter with The Red Baron. The other two had non-authentic camouflage ,and none of them had rotary engines.

Makes me happy to see Fok. F.1 102/17... The second of three pre-production tripes produced. Of the three F.1's, 101/17 was maintained at the Fokker factory for testing. 102/17 was issued to Jasta 11 and was flown briefly by Manfred von Richtofen for his 60th and 61st kills before being handed over to Ltn Kurt Wolff, who was killed in the aircraft. 103/17 was issued to Jasta 10 and was flown by Ltn. Werner Voss. If was Voss who got into a dogfight with seven Se.6a's of No. 56 squadron, putting bullets through all seven before he was finally shot down and killed. Fok. Dr.1 152/17 was the third of MvR's Dr.1 triplanes (fourth if you count the F.1 pre-production ship). Fok. Dr.1 454/17 was Lothar von Richtofen's Tripe. After the first batch of Dr.1's reached Jasta 11, MvR was known to have flown 114/17, which he crashed when the Oberursel II engine threw a cylinder and knocked off the cowling, 127/17, 141/17, 152/17, 161/17, 425/17 (this was the tripe he was flying when he was killed) and 477/17. Jasta 11's 'colors' were red cowlings, wing struts and wheel covers. As stated in the video, pilots would paint their own colors and markings to identify a particular pilot's aircraft. 114/17 was painted in the factory scheme of Green streaked over doped linen with a green cowling with light blue struts and under wing and under fuselage surfaces. Starting with 127/17, MvR's tripes were painted with a progression of red on the aircraft starting with the tail surfaces as seen on 152/17 in the video. 127/17, 152/17 and 425/17 were known to progress to all red at some time during their use. All the others had a red top wing and red tail surfaces with the red extending forward on the fuselage, first to the aft edge of the white field for the cross, then to the forward edge, and then to the back edge of the cockpit.

You must draw a lot of inspiration from these outings, surrounded by amazing machines.

I absolutely do. Seeing these amazing accurate machines in their natural surroundings allows me to not only experience the sights, sounds, and smells, but it also allows me to see more accurately how light behaves across their surfaces.

Cool stuff. My grandfather was a Fokker mechanic in WW1. Not sure if he was a DR3 or D7 mechanic.

A really fantastic and interesting video, I had no idea that there were so many triplains in existence. Really looking forward to seeing the rest of the series. Coming for the UK I find it fascinating to heare the different ways that you Americans pronounce some English words. I'm sure that this comment works both ways!

Hi John. Yes, it was Voss who took on the SE5's of 56 Sq in a legendary dogfight. It was Ernst Udet, however, that had "Du Doch Nicht" (Definitely not you) painted across his tail.

@@russellsmithstudios930 And it was Udet, in a dogfight with ace Charles Guynemer, showed mercy and chivalry when the outclassed Frenchman’s guns jammed. Awaiting his fate, Guynemer was amazed to see Udet fly in formation briefly above him, inverted, waving before flying off.

The Fokker Scourge was the introduction of the Eindecker. It's not just any Fokkers from WW1. Limited knowledge of history by Americans again.
