Thanks for the inspiration Chris. Using the plans, made this to raise/lower my sander. Installed on the Paulk workbench, making a few adjustments to fit where desired. Works GREAT! Very stable! As seen near the end of this video, it is highly recommended to secure the tool to the platform. Makes it easier to lift.

@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 2 года назад
Hey Bart, I'm still using the original, replaced the original Rigid planer with a heavier DW735. I did redesign things a bit when I drew plans to make the platform larger, and double up the drawer slides to 4x. Router table would be a neat concept, I've seen several folks use the mount for spindle sanders and one said they were planning on a table saw. I'm working on a new personal bench which will include the planer mount from the revised plans. I may also add a kickstand to the drawer also.

Top shelf! Thanks for posting. Have you had any issues with "racking" - the drawer slides seem a bit light for lateral strength?
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 3 года назад
Thank you! It's definitely not as rigid as a stand alone base, when in up position it rests on blocks of wood that transfer load to frame & prevents most racking. I've run 8' 8/4 material through it as is and I'm on year 5 of average use with no failures. I changed to using 2x sets of drawer slides when I made the plans, so I definitely recommend that change.

Drawer slides are rated for a pair
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 4 года назад
Yes they are, I think I probably mis-spoke and said "each". The ones I used are rated to 100# as a pair. Thanks for pointing that out, Michael.
@martinoamello3017
@martinoamello3017 4 года назад
I worry about the strength. I do a lot of heavy duty planing of pine laminated counter tops, 2" thick (or more) laminations of yellow pine 8-12" wide so they can get really heavy themselves, 30-40 pounds each themselves depending on the density of individual sections. Additionally I have the same planer, a Ridgid 70 pound beast so we're talking over 100 pounds being running with a LOT of vibration and torque going on. Your bench would pretty much have to be bolted down so it wouldn't tip over I would think. For now my planer sits on a rolling platform under the bench and I have to lift it up to the top of the bench each time and typically nail it in place on the bench to keep from vibrating off the end while running. I love the concept, but there's just too much vibration, weight and torque going on in the wrong directions. I'd have to build it from structural steel and weight down the opposite side of the bench to feel comfortable with this. Lol But hey, I don't mind doing some welding when the need arises. I did weld 1/4" steel just yesterday for a project. I kind of worry about catching things on fire around all this sawdust and wooden stuff though.. Maybe some steel supports with bearings to make things easier to raise and lower and a fold out support under the planer whilst running..I'd really hate to see a running planer with a 8 foot long counter top in it come crashing down on the floor. That would get ugly real quick.
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 4 года назад
Martino, Thanks for watching, the interest and the feedback. Trying to address your thoughts/ concerns: Torque from weight of planer and material is not a factor in my setup. The cart its mounted to weighs over 1000#. In my current plans for sale I improved the design to use 4x drawer glides which gives a rated support load of over 200#. The way I transfer the weight to ground is close to the bench so it reduces the "torque" or moment from the load of the planer and material. Since original build (2016) I now have a DeWalt planer (90+lbs) and have planed 12"wide 8/4 material that was 8' long through this setup. I do use indfeed and outfeed rollers to support long boards which also carries some of the weight. With respect to vibration, I'm not sure where your vibration might be coming from. Steel is definitely an option and for any 4-bar mount that "moves" like this bolting it to a rigid support surface is required. That all being said, I'm 4 years into using this setup. I haven't replaced or changed a thing except for the planer. I think the plans I recently drew and published are a solid improvement to my design in this video. Your planer cart sounds functional. I hope you found some value in reviewing the design and I appreciate your feedback!

@benchtopwoodworks

Thanks Bob, they're still good after a few years I haven't changed anything. I'm drawing plans currently and adding double slides. The Dewalt is putting the 100# rating to the test, there is some deflection and I think doubling them up will make everything operate even more smoothly with little deflection.

@@benchtopwoodworks Gas struts would be the best way I think, just mark two points one on the frame of the non moving table and one on the moving platform the distance they move apart from one another is the travel distance needed for the strut. the overall length is determined by the weight and your setup there are hundreds of possible struts out there.

Another question, what do you do for outfeed with long, heavy stock? For now I'm using my TS with a few boards stacked up to catch the weight coming off mine, but then I'm not sure you're doing the same kind of work I'm doing. I do a lot of dense yellow pine. 13" widths of 48" or more can be 40-50 pounds. I'd be afraid this might twist it off your setup. Perhaps placed on the end of the bench with maybe the bench itself as the outfeed? www.wp.copewithmartin.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/15965499657156128102662323552309-scaled.jpg

I'm not belittling your setup in the least by the way. It's very ingenious of you. I'm just thinking out loud via the comments section here for my own needs. I had a few customers once upon a time wanting multiple tables built for them.. Gone with the wind..
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 4 года назад
I'm not insulted, Martino. I appreciate the feedback and valid criticisms. This was a prototype when I designed and built it; I've since improved it some and published plans so I felt it needed addressing. Ideally when I plane heavy stock I work with a buddy. I have some roller stands that I double up otherwise. It's always a challenge to get them to exact height so I typically put a piece of 14"wide x 48" long melamine on them to catch it. I made a long support sled from 3/4" melamine coated particleboard reinforced with plywood for my old Rigid. It was 60" long and went across the planer bed. This gave me 24" indeed support and outfeed support which helped a lot. I haven't made one yet for the DeWalt but probably will before I do any jobs requiring large planed panels. How do you join/flatten the finished counters to get your full width?

How did you determine the length of the links? As well as where to place the slides to ensure your planer did not make contact with the bench
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 4 года назад
Howard, thanks for watching and for the question. I figured most of it out in a sketch before I built it. The length of the links was determined by the final height I wanted the planer bed to sit at. Somewhat hard to fit into this response. Essentially, the links raise the planer bed by almost double their length (changes slightly with the angle). I wanted my planer bed to raise by ~28" so I made the links 14". Sketching the assembly in the "up" position without dimensions allowed me to figure out my dimensions for the actual build. Hope that helps some, I'd be more than happy to answer any other questions or specific ones you have. I've got some plans in the works that I will be sharing soon.

Sure, depending on the dimensions of what you're planning to put on the mount. The plans are pretty easy to modify depending on what you're trying to achieve. Happy to email about details if you like.

Nice work on the ‘fold away planer’. I have been considering various ideas for storing the miter saw beneath the bench/outfeed table, and raising it so that the table of the miter saw would be flush with the bench top. In this concept, a section of the bench top would fold back (or be removed), and portions of the bench top would fold forward on either side of the miter saw, providing extensions of the miter saw fence. The table saw would be at one end of the bench/outfeed table. Among the mechanisms considered to date are a planar four-bar linkage like yours, a pair of linear actuators, a scissor table, a screw jack, and a mechanism similar to many diy router lifts, driven by a threaded rod and a hand crank, drill or small electric motor. The front runners are currently the planar four bar linkage and the linear actuators. Btw, this mechanism is called a four bar linkage, and you are using two of them, one on each side. The four ‘bars’ are the shelf, the t

Thanks for watching, and taking the time to write, John. Maybe a gas strut to carry some of the load? I thought about , but never added one on. Hard to locate due to the rotation. The links do carry a significant amount of the load so it doesn't feel like lifting the full weight of the planer. Best of luck with everything

Nice job -- good out of the box thinking. (All planar and miter saw stands I have seen so far seem similar.) I am seriously thinking of buying a Dewalt planer. How important is it to you to get a planar up to workbench level to work with it? We're limited on space everywhere. I am wondering if we'd be unhappy with a lower level cart that just slides up under the miter saw cart, and out, staying at a lower level. It would be sturdier at a lower level. And they're quite heavy. You've used it this way for several years. Any changes you'd make? Thanks!
@benchtopwoodworks

R Wind, thanks for watching and the questions. I think ~waist height is optimal for most planers. Let's you handle material with straight arms and save your back. Most commercial planers sit about that high. Before this mount, I ran my planer on saw horses, and sometimes the ground. 50bd ft of oak on the ground was not fun on the back/knees and setup was a chore on the saw horses, especially to make sure I could collect the chips. My main goal with the mount was having it basically ready to go at all times. A shorter mount could definitely work. Main change I would make is to double the drawer slides (2x pair). Nothing has failed or come close on mine but it's not as rock solid as it could be. I also looked at Rockler's ultra-heavy-duty glides but they're priced ~$50+. I can buy full extension glides for $5 a pair at a local cabinet store (box stores charge any $18). The mount does carry most of the weight. It's probably equivalent to lifting 50-70% of the planer weight. Please let me know if that helps or if you have any other specific questions. I'll have plans out for this in the next few weeks (nothing like drawing them 4x years after the build)

@@benchtopwoodworks thanks for the quick reply. [ I think I just canceled my reply instead of posting, apologies if this is a duplicate. ] Definitely need to save my back. I've used a joiner but not a planer. Appreciate the perspective. I had hoped to install the planer on a rolling cart under the miter saw stand, as we're limited on floor space. Will have to reconsider. I don't want to use a "flip stand" because we consider our miter saw a "grab and go" tool. You've got a good way of doing this -- I would have been looking at more expensive (I'm sure!) hardware options to raise a tool up, like they use in kitchens for mixer stands only a lot heavier, and I'm sure that option if it exists would be at quite a price. Those planers are heavy! Makes me nervous lifting it without aid of some hydraulics or something. (I don't know where someone said 50lbs -- the Lowe's site specs say the Dewalt 735 is 92lbs without the infeed/outfeed tables.)
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 4 года назад
My Rigid was ~80# and the DeWalt is definitely over 90. The links support a good bit of the weight, (maybe half) but it does require some strength to lift. Definitely a trade- off in this design. I'm sure a spring or piston spring could be added, but it's a challenge on my setup due to the full 180+ degree rotation.
@rwind656
@rwind656 4 года назад
Thanks so much for sharing your design and experience. I'd rather not have to horse something around and that's beyond my limit. I think I understood you to say that because of the lifting aid in your device, you're only lifting about 50% of the weight. You have a really neat idea here and I will keep it in mind for other tools as we plan, but the planer is probably the wrong choice for us to bring out this way.. I think if we want to store it below somewhere, we need a hydraulic lift. I am now thinking of a scissors lift. On rollers. Thanks! Will let you know if we use your device on something besides the planer.

Chris, I really like your plan and am attempting to make one myself for a jig saw table. However, I am having trouble with the platform arms binding as they attempt to go up or down. What am I doing wrong?
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 4 года назад
Are they binding on each-other? If so try spacing the mounting holes farther apart (toward front and back of platform ) so the arms can't contact each-other as they rotate. ..or sand them where they bind. If your arms are binding on the platform there may be a clearance issue with the platform and drawer. Can you describe where it's binding? I have the arms and drawers bearing on steel washers as they rotate and the bolts through them relatively tight.
@jimsmith8739
@jimsmith8739 4 года назад
Chris Harpster They seemed to be binding on the front bolts. I drilled a hole parallel to the originals on the front and cleaned out the area between the two adjacent tools, in effect creating a slot. Seems to work.
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 4 года назад
I added flat washers everywhere the rotating wood would touch. I'm not sure how clear that was in the video. That allowed me to tighten things down pretty snug to prevent some side-to-side, racking. I hope that helps some. I'm glad it sounds like you worked it out! Would love to see a photo if you're open to emailing!

@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 4 года назад
David, I'm not sure what you mean by your question, are you talking about the way the end stick out? I originally thought I needed 24" glides when planning. 22" would have been the correct size. I mounted them the way I did to have the glides fully extend for the stops I made to lock the mount in the extended position. I've corrected this in the plans and doubled the drawer glides for stiffness. Thanks for asking, please let me know if that didn't answer your question.

My video was me actively designing and prototyping. Although my prototype works and continues to work after 5 years, I felt that 2x were best for the design because they operate more smoothly in tandem with that much weight. Thanks for asking, I recommend online or cabinet store for purchasing glides. Significant cost savings.
