In the scheme of prepping for MOAB I really wanted to find a place for my Hi-Lift Mount. After deciding that I wasn't going to carry it inside the cab I started looking for other options. Insert me building a Folding Tire Carrier + Hi lift mount here. In the end it cost me right around $100 and took me 4 evenings to put together. It would have been less of each but I lacked some of the right equipment. Needless to say I'm happy with it. Hoping it holds up well now!

I'd be worried about scraping on it more when the angle is a lot. The 4runner already scrapes bad on the hitch stock. Now it will be worse due to it sticking out. Will be interesting to see. Very creative!

Agreed. It’s about an extra 4” but it’s also 1/4 thick so I’m not too worried about it scraping. So long as it slides I’m ok

Your welcome. FJ style!. I got a question. Just bought a set of 20x10 Fuel wheels on 33x12.5. will a 3" lift on my 2012 4runner clear the tires? the wheels are wide inwards, and will I need wheel spacers? any words of advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I’m not entirely sure, I’ve never ran that setup so I honestly wouldn’t know. 3” lift should do it, just going to come down to the offset but you may rub due to the width at full lock.

I’m in the process of building my own Wilco solo whatever they call it. I can’t believe they want $800 for those. Anyway, great idea on the 4 pin connector, I hadn’t given thought to how I’d wire it up. You can buy a welder and the materials to build the Wilco for about half of what they want for it.

It worked out well, my one complaint was that the spare underneath does provide some protection against some rocks that took out my tow wiring coverings

Everything is going well. I’ll post an update after I toss on the 34’s. Going to use a tightening bolt to keep it tight

It was just a generic hitch tire carrier. I think they are about $75 new. I highly recommend using a pivot hitch bracket if you already have one

Using the trailer plug to power the plate is fantastic. I would have liked to see lowering and raising the tire. I wonder how difficult that is? That tire is not light, plus the high lift and the steel. I also wonder if there may be a heavy duty spring available, that the pivot bolt could pass through (with one spring arm hooked to the horizontal tube, the other in the vert tube) to assist when lifting? Anyway, great project. Nicely done!

Did you ever use ur spare tire in the front. Im trying to figure out if 285 will rubb the uca with the steel spare wheel.

Us actually. Threw a bead on the trail but that was with the 265’s. I didn’t have any running though because of my spacers. Without them and a 285 on the spare I could see it rubbing

Didn’t really have any rattle issues but did have a slight sway. Ended up putting a strap on it while I was running around Moab and that solved it

Love the vid/idea. Been looking into swing carriers and stumbled upon this. Would you feel comfortable keeping the set up for long periods of time? Or do you use just for trips.

I’ve ran it across states, on trails, and am running it full time on my Tacoma now. I added a strap that runs to a tie down point in my bed to secure it a bit better and it’s perfect

Any updates? Did it hold up? Seems like it would be too much weight, too high on your hitch. Did it wiggle around while you were off road?

It worked out well. I needed to use a strap to keep it tight though. I need to get one of those hitch tightening mechanisms

I don’t. If someone really wants to take it off they can. I don’t want to deal with locks everytime I move it

what did you do to mount the tire onto the carrier? Weld bolts?

It has adjustable slots. So you put a bolt with a washer in from the back and adjust to whatever bolt pattern is on the wheel youre using and then lug nuts on the bolt

Great to know, I think the strut would make it safer. I used to have a tyre carrier on my off road SR5 Toyota Corolla. And having the strut on it, made for better handling.

I can’t remember the brand off the top of my head. If you do a search for 4runner cb mounts it should come up though. It works great and I’m going to use it on our land cruiser now

Instead of buying a slanted tire carrier I think we’re bend some tubing and make our own tubing is cheaper then getting a posion spider or other companies......

With 255’s it only rubbed a little in reverse at full lock but barely. Well worth having. Love the width

I have 1.25 spacers, all terrain tires, 2 inch lift and it rub my lower bumber

Asa Sullivan try a 37 on a long arm like that along with a hijack. A fully loaded 37 Nitto weighs around 90lb with wheel and tire. Along with a 15+lb hijack. Yeah, tell me how that’s not heavy going up and down on a long swing arm just to put something in the back of the hatch. 🤣

Nice design for the street, would not trust off-road or on highways. There's not a lot of redundancy there.

"worked perfectly" until it doesn't. Everything that is under designed can last a certain amount of time. The build looks good, but again, there isn't enough redundancy there and it looks like a failure waiting to happen. Just hooe it doesn't go through the windshield of a car behind you.

If it didn’t break on the trails after being beaten to hell on rocks and rocking back and forth on the trails for 5 days it should be fine on the road. I agree though, anything can break
