Folk viola: two ways to play 'Out on the Ocean' 

A demo video of two different ways to play the traditional tune 'Out on the Ocean' on the viola. The first version is a solo version, arranged to be best suited to the instrument; the second is for playing along with other instruments which usually use a key that isn't so viola-friendly, e.g. in a session or ceilidh band. There is digital sheet music for this tune available from www.folkviola.... .

Two Ways to Play 'Out on the Ocean on the Viola'
Version 1: Solo viola version.
If the viola is the only melody instrument (e.g. if you're just playing with a guitarist, or solo) the best key for this tune on a viola is C major.
This is transposed down a 5th from the original key of G, so you play the same fingerings as you would on a violin.
BUT!
If you want to play along with other musicians in a traditional music session, the tune will be played in the original key of G.
Here's how you can play along with violin players and other instruments in this key, while staying in 1st position on the viola...
Version 2: Session Version
The first section of this tune does not go onto the violin's E string, so can be played at the original pitch on the viola. You can do this if you want to blend in with the violins.
The second section goes up onto the E string on the violin, so if you want to avoid shifting to 3rd position, you can play it an octave lower on the viola.
The viola can also play the first section an octave lower.
This maintains the original shape of the tune, with a lower pitched first section and higher second section.
