Amazing as always and Elizabeth added so much insight. My ward boundaries in Massachusetts include Salem and our bishop (called this year) lives there - he and his family are definitely great treasures! Fun to hear about the area.
You two never cease to amaze me. Who wants to hear about the Kirtland Safety Society? Nobody. Yet here comes Elizabeth Kuehn with so much knowledge and such an uplifting perspective. I learned so much that I didn't know. I never miss an episode!
This is so interesting! People are critical of the church going into debt in Joseph's day but they are also critical of the church today because we are doing well financially!!
The comment was made that Ebenezer Robinson is the only source we have for why they went to Salem. Craig James Ostler wrote a nice piece on this topic where he referenced a letter from Joseph to Emma that helps to corroborate Robinson to a degree: “Joseph wrote, “With regard to the great object of our mission, you will be anxious to know. We have found the house since Bro. Burgess left us, very luckily and providentially, as we had one spell been most discouraged. The house is occupied, and it will require much care and patience to rent or buy it. We think we shall be able to effect it; if not now within the course of a few months. We think we shall be at home about the middle of September.” Joseph Smith, “To Emma Smith, August 19, 1836,” The Personal Writings of Joseph Smith, comp. and ed. Dean C. Thank you so much for your insights on section 111. I believe there is so much more that the Lord is working on in this revelation, that was not apparent to the prophet at that time. If you are wanting additional insights on this section study the history of the Erastus Snow and Orin N. Woodbury families and the building of St. George.
After listening to Elizabeth, I’m troubled as to why do we have the preface to 111 telling us that their trip was a search for money. Why would that be? I believe Joseph had different ideas of a treasure.
I think that they explained this in the video. The heading did not originally talk about searching for money, but that was added in one of the previous editions based on the words of that guy who wrote about it in the 1880s (forgot his name). With the new research and scholarship that has happened since then, I wouldn't be surprised if it changes back in future editions.
@@kylemorin3945 Doesn't the last phrase in verse 4 "...its wealth pertaining to gold and silver shall be yours.." indicate the Lord was promising temporal blessings and not just the gaining of the spiritual treasures (converts)?
