What is the soteriology problem? Dr. Steven Harper returns to discuss Doctrine and Covenants, Section 137, and the centuries-long question of who gets saved by God. We discuss the nature of God, the redemption of the dead, and the reality that death isn’t a deadline to determine a person’s salvation.

In Feb 2019 our 14 year old son took his own life. We were devastated. We had no idea he had been struggling. What kind of a mother doesn't know her son is struggling? The day he died, my son in law gave me a blessing. In it he declared that Seth was received in the arms of our Savior. I SAW IT. As he said it, I SAW IT...that it had happened. With that came the Holy Spirit teaching me...Jesus understood Seth, Jesus knew he was struggling...and Jesus held Seth when he stepped through the veil. Now, we never want people to think that suicide is an escape. Seth felt the exact same way as when he left mortality. He still had to face the turmoil and anxiety he struggled with on earth, and now he had to do it without a body and without his closest family. I imagine after the Savior embraced Seth, He escorted him to a classroom somewhere to begin learning. I testify of the words you shared . The Lord knows our hearts.

I’m sorry for your loss! I loved the quote recited by M. Russell Ballard about all the considerations taken by our Savior, including what we know and understand.

Incredible story of the heart. Thank you for sharing your personal sorrow and triumph. Bless you sister, and May Seth go on to teach others in Paradise who are just getting there. How kind and loving The Savior is to show a grieving mother that her son is with Him.

I am so sorry for the loss of your son. How merciful Heavenly Father is to allow to to see Seth and the Savior! Do not beat yourself up for not knowing. He could not see any other path for relief. There is, I know from experience. Trusting in the Lord.

Wow! This was just what I needed to hear today. I especially loved the part of how God sees our effort (works) and knows our true intentions (hearts), He knows what I am capable of and accepts my efforts. if I can truly LEARN that and apply that to my life. Thank you!

As I am listening to this episode it has brought me so much comfort. I have lost a brother who had fallen away from the church but everyone who knew him knew that he was deeply a loving person. Just a month ago my son lost a really good friend to suicide. The comfort and peace you brought me through this lesson is a great one. How blessed we are to have such a loving and caring Heavenly Father who truly wants all of his children to return to him. I am grateful for the temple that allows us to do the work for the dead. I was able to do the work for my brother.

After watching this, I remind myself to repent relentlessly. Thank you for that catchy phrase! I love how you talked about the Lord knowing our hearts and seeing our efforts, however lacking they are. It reminds me of a favorite verse shared in a previous episode that I often turn to, D&C 124:1 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you, my servant Joseph Smith, I am well pleased with your offering and acknowledgments, which you have made; for unto this end have I raised you up, that I might show forth my wisdom through the weak things of the earth." I love that the Lord tells him he is weak. Not meant to be a put down, simply something they both knew. As President Nelson says, "The Lord Uses the Unlikely to Accomplish the Impossible". Beautiful message. Many thanks!

When I was a kid, I thought the top of the big pipes of the organ were sculpted to look like President Kimball's head (bald with ears that stick out). I thought that was going to be a lot of work after he passed.

My husband is in advanced Alzheimer's disease and I haven't been able to attend church for a couple of years, your podcast has been such a blessing to me, learning from your guest speakers & from both of you, it's like being in a institute class. My testimony has increased & my knowledge of Church history & Joseph Smith. Thank you! Thank you! Looking forward to next Year!

One of my favorite podcasts you have done! Thank you! Do you have a link or can direct where I can read more about Joseph F. Smiths early life or life experiences you referred to.

I have also read/heard claims that Joseph cherry-picked portions of other faiths' tenets and cobbled together a 'new' church. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Will you share where I might find the M. Russell Ballard talk of how our circumstances are considered when we leave this life? Over Thanksgiving family gathering we had a discussion about this topic and I would love to share with my family this truth from an apostle of Jesus Christ. Thank you for all the work you put into this. I have learned and grown so much while listening to this show as I study the scriptures.

If Joseph Smith brought forth the doctrine to comfort his pain over his brother’ death then isnt it odd that no other minister would come up with this doctrine. Don’t most people want to hear this ?

I’d like to ask Steve why the word “Cumorah” does not appear in the “Saints” book.

Your intros of John have gotten out of hand hank. I know saints that have stopped listening because of that reason. I skip intros because I like the podcast but I can’t stand listening to your idol worship of John Bytheway.

I actually love the intro. To me it shows the friendship and respect between them two. And it makes me chuckle at times.

But you didn't skip this intro, apparently. I love their friendship and love for each other, and their sense of humor. Especially after reading of some of the wonderful friendships in the Doctrine and Covenants, it's nice to know warm friendships in the gospel still exist today.
