While weaving in tales from his adventures as an endurance athlete and broadcaster, Mark will share his passion for young people engaging in careers about which they are truly passionate. Drawing on his own experience, Mark will champion the creation of a culture where young people make real choices about their futures based on their passions and skills
TV presenter and broadcaster, record breaking round the world cyclist and ultra-endurance adventurer, Mark's epic documentaries have taken viewers to over 100 countries, into the Arctic, the high mountains and recently around the Commonwealth. Mark first made fame for an 18,000 mile round-the-world bike race, where he smashed the previous World Record by a staggering 82 days. More recently, he presented the build up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as the Queen’s Baton relay made its way around 70 nations and territories. Mark arrives at TEDx Glasgow 2015 fresh from his latest adventure cycling from Cairo to Cape Town.

One day, I found myself trudging up a rugged, thousand-foot climb on the "Last Chance" section of the Pacific Coast trail, dragging a 100-pound touring bike with me. Breathless, I had only a slight idea of where I was, not knowing if the trail was going to disappear off a cliff. The climb felt endless and I lost track of time. Finally, I was greeted by towering redwoods, fog rolling in from the ocean, and silence. Gliding through the trees, with no cars or people around, I felt it was all worth it. I thank Mr. Beaumont for helping to inspire me to travel. My life is better for it.

Hiram Diaz he needed to say that at the age of around 20 years is the best time for developing a hobby and getting mastery in it... But it is Also true that there is no age of passion and hobby...

Hiram Diaz agreed unfortunately the world we live seems to think once you hit a certain age that’s its game over! Passion and drive is all you need age is just a number

incredible but for me cycle touring is about meeting and staying with locals. He is missing out on this.

He's not touring though, he's an ultra-endurance randonneur type rider. Also a lot of other bicycle touring folks I talk to also just try to pedal through their journey as fast as possible and never take the time to hang around like I do. I like hanging out in wilderness places for a few days and relaxing before continuing on. I hate people.

He doesn't give the feeling in his speech of a person who feels to be missing out on something. Maybe he would say someone else is missing out on something he experiences if the other would make the journey too long, once that person would stop too much. Just different mindset.

An amazing bloke with a ridiculous level of drive, and some fine tales to tell, but a surprisingly dull speaker.

I sensed there wasn't too much interaction with audience they laughed once towards the end... he made some gitty comical remarks no one laughed throughtout talk when I thought they would laugh or clap he probably sensed he lost them or something otherwise he said what he wanted to say... ugh I don't know but I searched on comments here to see if anyone would see that about this talk... you had why u say he's was kinda dull? Just wanna know your opinion..

I didn't find him dull at all, he is obviously really driven and has had enough experience to make him confident. I don't think everybody who travelled around the world should make people laugh. Guess what he stated would be more accurate: you tell these stories to inspire!

I think the audience might have been just breathless and surprised to hear all that. More like: got no words for this!!
