It's a shame we didnt know before you went to Manchester Airport. There are some really good spots which you clearly didn't find, there is one where the planes come in to land right over your head. You cant park a car there anymore but you would have been fine on the bikes Then there is the Airport Pub at the end of the runway, good place in beer garden to watch them up close.
Marti, search for MiRiDER Handlebar Bag, its a thing. As for the D-lock... I hold my Litelok X3 D-lock on my bike using Heavy duty reusable hook and loop fastening straps to strap it to my bike frame. I use this method because its a heavy lock and I don't want it in my backpack.
We rode there when we were 9 in the 70s, loved watching the planes & the lift 😂 we only saw them in James Bond films, cid suddenly appeared thought we breaking into cars, replied no, then grabbed me by the scruff of the neck & held me over the top of the carpark wall- 100 ft drop, trying to get me to admit it, never went again, put me right off.

The first tower is the old tower its now used for tours and maybe training. You should have gone to the airport pub at end of runway or the aviation viewing park.
