Apologies for the cancelled premiere all - unfortunately the HD processing hadn't been completed when the video went live meaning 360p was the best quality. I thought I could re-premiere it but it appears you can't do that 🧐 mess up on my end I'm afraid, apologies again. F

What a brave man he was. A fascinating account of his struggle to stay alive and the background of Irish history. You have explained it so well and shown us the places he likely passed through. It all seems so vivid. I’m glad he found help at last from a noble family. It’s such a tragic story, the worst storm for 100’s of years. His account is so important in our understanding of the event. Beautiful music too. Thank you.

Absolutely fantastic! Thank you for this. When I was a youngster I used to go to Mayo for my holidays with my mum & brothers from London (Cockney Irish, us) & loved the history & mythology. Living in Canada, now, I am Currently reading Thomas Pakenham's 'The year of liberty:The history of the great Irish rebellion of 1798' which features a description of the French landing at Kilcummin & how far across Eire Humbert's expedition reached. Anyway, we're going back in June for a wedding some am hoping to also explore Mayo again as well as take trip up to Kilcummin & thevCarrowmore tombs in Sligo. We might as well take in Streedagh beach while we're there especially after your fabulous 're- enactment' of Francesco De Cuellar's adventure. Thanks again, most inspiring!

That's a great idea for a video actually! The village I live in was on the Humbert route ( I mention in it one of my other vids called Horsemen Pass By if you're interested 😁). Glad you enjoyed, Frank. Hope you get a spell of fine weather for June 🤞🏽

By the way, if you're down for some light hill walking, I highly recommend the tombs at Carrowkeel, about 20 mins drive from Carrowmore and, in my opinion, far more beautiful 🤫

Lol, I am hoping the weather is generous, too, as I recall many rainy days staying inside at my Grans (the farm was in Ballintubber). But when the sun came out? Me & my 2 brothers would take to the brae, the fields, haystacks & exploring all day long. Occasional trips to Castlebar with my aunty (we had to get our British comics; 'The Beano', 'Dandy', etc), Knock (convinced my mum once to buy me a huge, set of glass rosary beads once for 2/6 from the many vendors lined up outside the church), Bertra Strand or a climb up the Reek. I watched your other video on Sligo & surrounds & will take your tip on the neolithic mound you suggested. A nice tip-of-the-hat to the Kulcummin landing but you're right a whole episode on Humbert's campaign (& the short lived 'Republic of Connaught') would be a terrific elisode considering how far they reached &, based on your other videos, how detailed your research would be. Keep up the great work. The Tourist Board should be commisioning you for projects across Eire. On a final note, me & my missus will try & pay a trip to 'The Nook' for a cuppa. All the best!!

A very interesting video on the history of the survivors of the ill fated Spanish armada, I as a local Sligonian often walk streedagh Beach and cant help to wonder what it was like for those who survived. I truly enjoyed your video,. It gave me a great insight on how things might have been back in 1588.

Loved it! Was looking for an English language version of the story (there is also an excellent Timeline version in Gaelic - beautiful but impenetrable!). Really liked the visits to all those old ruins as part of the telling - that part of the world is quite unique. Enjoyed how you told the story and relevant historical context without modern interpretation, that's quite a skill. Thanks for making this.

Hola Ferdia! Another interesting video. I can't believe the hardships DeCuellar went through. I don't know how many of us modern humans could handle the travails back then. Adaptability is a human trait that is a part of our DNA. When faced with a crisis, one has to adapt or perish. DeCuellar definitely adapted. I have lots more to say, but I better stop. I am living the modern life with lots to do and with limited time to do them. I truly appreciate all the effort you put into these videos and your blogs.

Ferdia, you have one heck of a talent in putting together very captivating videos ! The videography, together with your clear, calming voice and very well flowing informative narrations, I could picture what De Cuellar went through from the moment the ship wrecked to when he penned his letter to King Phillipe. And I really also enjoyed viewing the beautiful raw countryside scenes of Sligo and Northwest Ireland. Thank you very much , Ferdia.

Thank you very much. I've done a bit of research in the family history and my family is from there. And could have been among those that DeCuellar avoided. I've stayed near Grange twice now and recognized the locales. There are cannons pulled recently from the wrecksites of the squadron of Spanish ships near Streedagh a few years back. Good work.

Hey Ferdia, I just watched your video, the narrative of which I read days ago. It is beautifully filmed, narrated, and gorgeous music as I was hoping to hear. By any chance was that your aunt on the harp providing the music, I could not find a music credit, maybe I did not look at the right location. The editing done to present this story by video was amazing. I really appreciated the maps, the time you took to explain the route in addition to the story of the experiences of de Cuellar. I always learn so much from your history videos. I had no idea Ireland existed as it did from the Norman Conquest, I believe, until the end of the 17th century. I am embarrassed to say I did not know England and the Tudor Crown went to such lengths to dominate and populate the island of Ireland. With Irish DNA dominating my blood, I feel I should have known. Of course the Tudor days, especially King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I are well covered in world history classes in the US as well as many, many movies from Hollywood. Your consolidating all the information of this period was a brilliant addition and made this more than an isolated story, but a story that was repeated thousands of times by individuals that did not write a letter to record their history. Overall, this is one of my favorite of your videos because of the history of Ireland subject matter and the period of history in which it took place. Thank you so much for all your research, time and effort Ferdia. I will see you down the road for your next adventure. joy

Thanks a mil Joy! I love what you say about all the stories of those who never wrote a letter... Lost to time. Delighted you enjoyed! And no, my aunt wasn't featured on this one, though maybe in the future! All the music you heard was lute and baroque guitar, including works from a number of early Spanish composers. I'll edit the deets with the tracks - thanks for reminding me! All the best, F
