Joseph Brabin in the creator of the JTB Reptiles. In this episode, Joseph talks about the electromagnetic spectrum and how to apply that knowledge to the way we heat/light our reptiles. We also discuss the inherent issues with the Pet Tube community and whether or not the husbandry advice they give is accurate and valuable. Joseph also walks us through the brumation process he uses to temperature cycle his reptiles in the cooler months.
Two Corrections From the Episode:
1) There are 6 native reptiles in the UK NOT including the amphibians.
2) Provitamin D interacts with UVB to become D3 (rather than previtamin D)

Both such awesome channels. So happy I just happened to somehow stumble onto content that covers electromagnetic spectrum related issues. Channels like these, spreading this information, and telling people what they need to know, to buy/find the right stuff; are some very big stepping stones to minimising a lot of suffering in the future, and upping the quality of life of a lottt of conscious creatures (if they must exist in the first place lol). Pretty much everyone does indeed get their info from youtube with this stuff. I think it was the video on how to disinfect wood.

This video makes me VERY happy! My 2 fav reptile tubers and funny as neither of u own the species i keep. What can be more exciting than learning, which in turn helps ur reptiles! I do share your video's and do see the mountain you are climbing, but i will keep sharing! Never sell out, your are both amazing and the reptiles need ppl who put care before likes :D

Great episode, it's really got me thinking! The nitty gritty of the hardware has never been my strength in this hobby, so I have a question: I've been gradually switching all of my snakes from mats and ceramic emitters to radiant heat panels, because they provide a better gradient than the former and they're safer than the latter. And I ADORE them. They've been more effective at reaching and maintaining temps than any other source I've tried, including incandescent lights. But obviously, the panels themselves do not produce light. My question is, is it sufficient to use these in tandem with a UVB bulb, or does that not cover a broad enough spectrum of light?

@AnimalsatHomePodcast 4 года назад
I’m glad you enjoyed the episode! Yes the heating and lighting is definitely complicated subject, I’m just getting used to it myself! So if your set up has a radiant heat panel and a UVB bulb, you would be missing near infrared A & B and the mid spectrum visible light (and by the way currently that is exactly the way my boas are set up i.e. radiant heat panel and UVB, so of course no judgement at all!) If you could figure out a way to incorporate a halogen bulb into the set up you will effectively be adding IR-A and IR-B during the daytime (this is my eventual plan). If you haven’t yet, listen to episode number 29 with Sam Perrett. he does a great job of explaining what bulbs to use in order to effectively supply the full electromagnetic spectrum.

@@AnimalsatHomePodcast Cool, thanks! I'll check that out. I'm not sure when I'll be able to add a third bulb in, though. I'm already out of outlets as it is with 5 snakes and only one has UVB at the moment, ahah

curious re: for tropical nocturnal python: would like to use a UTH tape to keep substrate at at least 75-80.F overnight, and have either radiant heat panel (or surprisingly: tungsten bulb!?) on during the daytime, on a thermostat to get the 90F daytime. Python gets sluggish if my northern climate room temperature gets below 70 (and his air temp in the tank fluctuates below 70F). Does it matter if the tungsten bulb is clear or soft-white (common).? Should I use Ceramic emitter at night to keep air temp up, or just defer to radiant heat panel ? - what about either of these on enclosures over 12" tall, up to 24" for climbing reptiles? .. This is fascinating, & compares to what the reptile vet suggested (his was UVB 5 or 10, fluorescent, with radiant heat panel, but no under-tank heating).

Joseph has a great video on this regarding which bulb to choose, it should help you out! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XG7bA3sUIJ8.html Use the RHP at night to maintain temps would be totally fine! They seem to be more effective than ceramic emitters. For arboreal reptiles, I would always gravitate towards using a halogen for day temps. You could use a ceramic emitter or even an Arcadia Deep Heat Projector to maintain night time temps... although don't be afraid to allow for a nighttime temperature drop as long as it stays with in the natural range of the animal you are keeping.

I haven't watched yet, but just reading the description has me excited! It's so important to learn and apply science to animal care! I myself have taken a couple courses on the electromagnetic spectrum! Definitely something you HAVE to look into when getting an animal (especially one that basks)! ~
