This week Kramzer is taking a well-deserved break and leaving the ranking to Jason and Joe. To celebrate the release of their latest album, Medicine at Midnight, this week we are ranking the 10 studio albums of Foo Fighters.
****
Foo Fighters is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1994. It was founded by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl as a one-man project following the dissolution of Nirvana after the suicide of Kurt Cobain. The group took its name from "Foo fighter", a nickname coined by Allied aircraft pilots for UFOs and other aerial phenomena. Over the course of their career, Foo Fighters have won 12 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album four times. The band has also won an American Music Award, four Brit Awards, and two MTV Video Music Awards.
Prior to the release of Foo Fighters' 1995 debut album Foo Fighters, which featured Grohl as the only official member, Grohl recruited bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith, both formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as Nirvana touring guitarist Pat Smear. The band began with performances in Portland, Oregon. Goldsmith quit during the recording of their second album, The Colour and the Shape (1997); most of the drum parts were re-recorded by Grohl. Smear departed soon afterward but appeared as a guest with the band frequently from 2005; he rejoined the band in 2010.
Smear and Goldsmith were replaced by Franz Stahl and Taylor Hawkins, respectively, although Stahl was fired before the recording of the group's third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999). The band briefly continued as a trio until Chris Shiflett joined on guitar after the completion of There Is Nothing Left to Lose. The band released its fourth album, One by One, in 2002. The group followed that release with the two-disc In Your Honor (2005), which was split between acoustic songs and heavier material. Foo Fighters released their sixth album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, in 2007.
The band's seventh studio album, Wasting Light, produced by Butch Vig, was released in 2011, in which Smear returned as a full member. In November 2014, the band's eighth studio album, Sonic Highways, was released as an accompanying soundtrack to the Grohl-directed 2014 miniseries of the same name. On September 15, 2017, the band released their ninth studio album, Concrete and Gold, which became their second to reach number one in the United States and was the band's first studio album to feature longtime session and touring keyboardist Rami Jaffee as a full member. In February 2021, the band released its tenth album, Medicine at Midnight, and was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

For me Wasting Light is their best album. As Jason said is probably the best set of songs they put together for a while. I think the whole of the álbum is better than the sum of its parts. I think that this is what makes a really good album.

I agree. The Foo Fighters are a solid band but they were always missing something for my tastes. Missing an edge or something. Dave Grohl is very talented but he isn't really a lead singer or captivating personality. They are just a solid mainstream rock band which explains their appeal but they aren't very interesting IMO. The Colour and Shape was the only album that was exciting from start to finish. Had a cool sound and some of their best songs.

There is nothing left to lose for me, though I wouldn’t argue against any of the first three as their best. I prefer the warm sound of the 3rd album. Stacked actors is a total jam and the album has Dave’s best vocals I think. Great production on it, very underrated.

Great album with a pleasant vibe to it. Love the sound on it. Really nothing wrong with the first three records, very enjoyable accessible alt. pop rock. Really made them who they were. After that I think it changed with peaks and valleys later on but the early stuff is special.

The debut is easily my favorite. I was (still am) a huge Nirvana fan, but never heard of that album until my brother gave it to me on my birthday. I remember playing it for the first time and only then realizing that that was Dave's singing and writing on Nirvana's Marigold. Personally, I love the garage sound, much prefer the random-words lyrics here to the later stadium rock lyrics, and I also think everything that is unique about the Foo Fighters was already in there. Pretty amazing that Dave did it all by himself, and I can't think of many solo artists who managed to simulate the sound of an entire band as well as he did here.

Bought the second album and liked a good bit of it, though overall not as much as the first, then completely fell off after that. Interesting points....I think with my self titled album 10/10 score... I love its lofi-ness (I'm a lofi music artist so maybe I empathize) and I think this record deserves full marks because it's the one one record you really feel Dave is letting it all hang out....and this shines through on every track....that risk and raw energy in the album gives it that relistenable edge imo.... stops the other albums I've heard being on the same level song writing wise....it's the one I'm fond of and I'd pick up first from the crowd anyway....nice work guys🤘🤘

Well done fellas, think that's a pretty fair assessment of their albums from both sides. I've learned over the years to just ignore Dave's bloated self assessment of their records prior to them coming out. If I want some solid (generally) straightforward rock tunes the Foos have always been my go to.

Neil Young pulled of the rocking side, acoustic side thing with Rust Never Sleeps. Of course, Neil is known for putting out acoustic based albums and rocking electric albums. Maybe that's the secret sauce.
@wesleyorser4451

I think Jason makes a fair point that most artists probably can't pull off the format, but I find it odd that he applied this criticism to Rust Never Sleeps. The acoustic side is one of the most ethereal listening experiences I've ever had that I am so glad those five songs are grouped together the way they are.

Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace is an unsung classic. It's their best songwriting, best use of dynamics and ballsiest record overall. The deep cuts are as memorable as the singles. On the other hand I don't care for Medicine at Midnight. I agree that a change of style was overdue, especially after Sonic Highways, but the songs are so empty and the sound just has no edge. It's like they just try to build on a bare-bones simple riff but don't end up doing anything interesting on top. Like even their worse records, it's not bad, it's just forgettable.

I was there pretty much at the beginning with Dave and company in hearing the debut shortly after it came out, which probably contributes to why it may be my favorite (although #1 is neck and neck between that and Colour for me). There Is Nothing Left To Lose was good too, but my interest started waning with One By One - that album probably marked the first time I noticed the impact of the loudness war in rock music and surprised the resident production quality guy Jason didn’t mention how brickwalled to hell it is. 😂 I thought In Your Honor was fine, but by 2005 I had thoroughly moved on to exploring more classic rock and underground stuff, and actually didn’t hear another Foo Fighters album until Echoes a couple months ago. I’ve been meaning to check out Wasting Light soon though, since I know it’s considered to be their later period triumph.

Something about the first three Foo albums, they have a warm sound to them. Colour and the shape and nothing left to lose sound sublime. The way they used to do softer tracks too was so good, the way they did a song like Generator with the quiet/loud dynamic. Amazing. Doesn't seem like they do interesting sounding stuff anymore. Wasting light was seen as a big comeback and it is decent but honestly something is still missing for me. They push the rock too hard when they've always been real quality pop rock but not super heavy or rockin. Maybe it's the personality or sound of the newer stuff but it's kinda overblown and doesn't sound like the old stuff to me.

Wasting Light I like the Foo Fighters, probably the best "rock band" from last 25 years, but that's not saying much with the way rock music has been in the last 25 years. Foo fighters were great when they started. But they moved from grunge pop to hard rock and it’s gotten pretty boring. The last album I really bothered with was the half electric and half acoustic album. And the acoustic side was just garbage. Almost unlistenable. But even their harder sounding stuff moved from catchy power pop grunge to just bombastic rock. I actually think they changed their sound a bit after There is nothing Left to Lose because people said it wasn’t very hard and sounded wimpy. So they started emphasizing their heavier sounds going forward. And they stopped doing as much pop. But in truth there is nothing left to lose was actually a really good sounding record and actually sounded very professional and catchy. And foo fighters are actually better with power pop than hard rock. Or rather, their songs thst have pop elements are much better than the straight up hard rock songs.

First time watching a Listography album ranking where I found myself agreeing with both lists! Well done dudes. MY *FOO FIGHTERS* ALBUM RANKING: 10. *SONIC HIGHWAYS* [2014] (Their most ambitious effort. Great idea, but poorly executed. And also, what about Detroit?!?! That was a missed city/opportunity and would've made SH a 9 song album. Just saying. Despite the misfires, It does have a few great FF songs.) 9. *CONCRETE & GOLD* [2017] (Love all the guest musicians, especially Paul McCartney playing drums on "Sunday Rain", but its their least cohesive album. I also feel the production is just a bit too compressed and sucked some of the dynamics out from the songs). 8. *ONE BY ONE* [2002] (70% of the record is pure FOO at its finest. The other 30% is just meh. Not terrible. Just meh). 7. *ECHOES, SILENCE, PATIENCE & GRACE* [2007] (A mix of Great well written material accompanied with some other interesting off the wall cuts, but its all placed in the tracklisting in a odd way. It honestly took me years to finally appreciate this album for what it is. Its a weird album play-through, but thats my only gripe with it). 6. *IN YOUR HONOR* [2005] (Title track is EPIC. The acoustic material is wonderful and gorgeous. D.O.A. is quite possibly their most underrated and underappreciated single. But l share Jason's sentiment. As cool as it was to separate the electric and acoustic material, it would've made for a most interesting experience to have all the tracks mixed up between both discs. Double Albums should be allowed to be weird like that). 5. *MEDICINE AT MIDNIGHT* [2021] (Their most solid effort since WASTING LIGHT. Its fun. It grooves. Can't wait to hear these played live in front of thousands of people). 4. *FOO FIGHTERS* [1995] (Its just one of the most impressive debuts by any band (or man for that matter)). 3. *THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE* [1999](Possibly their most accessible album, which is not a bad thing. Ive heard Learn To Fly TOO MANY TIMES but theres not a bad song on this record. I love how melodic they got with this one. Aurora kills me every time). 2. *THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE* [1997] (Possibly their most iconic album. If I had to suggest a starting point for a FF new comer listener, I would tell them to pick this album up first. LOVE the variation between heavy rock scream your face off songs, to the more delicate sweeter and melodic tracks). 1. *WASTING LIGHT* [2011] (Their most solid release to date. It may not be their most famous or most name dropped album, but to me its their best. Production is amazing. All the songs are 10/10 stellar and well written. The musicianship does not disappoint. Honestly, if this is the result of them recording in Dave's garage, they need to make more records at Dave's house!!!). Love this band. Love this channel. Cheers.

I haven't really listened to "Concrete and Gold" OR "Medicine at midnight" enough to say anyhing so I won't. I'm ranking the rest of them... Before watching and enjoying the show! 8. Sonic Highways (2014) Interesting documentary around the album but overall very bland album to me. Feels like something a Foo Fighters cover-band could have done. 7. One by One (2002) If the album before perhaps went a bit too mainstream then this feels like a offbeat way to make the music more "true". It has some good songs and ideas but the overall production doesn't appeal to me and almost every song could been a bit shorter or better with some less rough edges. 6. Foo Fighters (1995) Impressive that Dave Grohl did all or most on this record by himself but as a whole album I don't really get the love it gets. About half the songs are very enjoyable. The rest isn't anything I need to hear very often. 5. Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007) Most good or decent songs but the structure could been more effective. It also feels like they are unsure where they want the album to go. Good but not great. 4. In Your Honor (2005) The first CD isn't that far from "Echoes, Silence Patience & Grace" in my book but the second CD is something I really enjoy. It is simple and slow songs. Very un-Foo Fighters but I like it. The biggest change of pace the band ever did and while it might not appeal to the larger crowd it did to me. 3. There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999) Many strong songs and a well crafted record but a few songs aren't something I hold very high. 2. Wasting Light (2011) A very solid record. Might not have the big hits like some of the others but a record I like all the way trough. A very good strong record for coming after 16 years into their career! 1. The Colour and the Shape (1997) I'm guess many peoples number one. Several big hits and for most part a diverse and fun record. A very big step from the debut for me and while the band has tried to top it I don't really think they have.

So, I like Foo Fighters, but am probably not really a big fan. I owned the first two albums and quite liked them, but did not follow along after. I have listened to a few of their other albums over the years and mostly they didn't stick with me (though I didn't hate them)... BUT I mainly come here to DISAGREE ABOUT SONIC HIGHWAYS. That is the one latter album I got into. I actually listened to it a lot the year it came out and it was one of my favorites that year. I didn't watch the show but Feast and the Famine and Congregation got a bunch of play on the 94.7 Alt radio in PDX and it hit all my classic rock pleasure centers so that is what stimulated me to get into this album. AND I do hear more different influences than on their other records: I hear Southern Rock, Classic Rock, Power Pop coming to the front but with still that big loud Foo Fighters sound. I like the clavinet, horns, guitar solos from high end guests, more epic track lengths. It's a successful experiment in my opinion. So... IDK, to me it's a bit more what I want from a modern loud rock band then the rest of their recent stuff, though admittedly they probably deserve me to actually go through the rest of their albums so I can make a more educated opinion of their catalog. But I guarantee when I do, Sonic Highways will not be at the bottom!

Joe nice Kiss shirt. I will take it in Kramzers eyes the Foo Fighters aren't as good as U2 or R.E.M? how about you 2 ? are the Foo fighters any good I know there not Def Leppard, Kiss, Ac/dc , Iron Maiden I understand that but are they at least middle of the road? i'm sure there not as good as ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd , Police but are they comperble to U2 and R.E.M , Soungarden , smashing pumpkins,, Alanis Moersett can they compete with 90's average bands or late 80's ? I understand somebody has to be in last place that's what brittney is for and not including her christina would have been in last place, can the foo fighters compete with lesser bands? so how would you compare your top 2 albums colours and the shade, there is nothing left to lose to some other bands lesser album as far as talent goes say Madonna's like bedtime stories, Erotica? Black Sabbath, Dehumanizer, Technical Ectsasy , Never say die, Mob rules? Ac/dc ball breaker and stiff upper lip? R.e.m's lesser albums that you ranked 2 weeks ago say your 10th place albums? U2 there albums that were ranked 10nth place?

Foo Fighters. Really? What's next... A ranking of Nickelback or Dave Matthews Band's discography? I kid, I kid! But "the Foos" (ick) are basically a solid bar band with a high profile lead singer and dreamy drummer. Some songs are fine enough, but they've never released a must-hear, front-to-back "Classic Album". We all know Queens Of The Stone Age are better. This is rock for "Basic Bitches".
