Our food bank will soon have a garden, all our produce is so old by the time we get it, but Keep meaning to tell you, we bought 4 honeydew melons and 4 cantaloupe i put all seeds still in pulp and wrapped in paper towel, and buried 4 inches down, although the aren't suppose to they all sprouted within days! Never be affraid to try to grow anything, i had so many cantaloupe in Arizona by throwing seeds out lol. But I'm in Alaska its only 60 degrees but my cantaloupe is sprouting. Excited over raisens and everything you get. Your a great inspiration to all who can't just buy everyting you see. Thank You
Candy the orange peels, make a cleaner with the peels and vinegar. Cut some oranges into wedges with the skin, freeze seperately then put into a ziploc bag, and you can peel them, separate, and freeze each slice, then the slices can be added to water or lemonade for flavor.
You can freeze-dry the orange peel. Then you can grind it up and you have powdered orange peel to season food with. You can also candy the orange peels. You can use some of your fresh orange juice to flavor a stir fry that you can put over those rice noodles you got which you can dress with just a little bit of sesame oil and a dash of soy sauce.
You give good ideas for making affordable homemade recipes that move away from the regular everyday foods that can become boring. I tend to stick to what I know works, but I watch your videos and some of your meals, although foreign to my tastebuds, I would definitely want to try.
Girl Scout trick to cooking with stainless over an open flame: coat the outside of pots and pans with dish soap for easy clean up. Can prevent permanent pan blackening :)
Orange marmalade is really easy to make and can. Loving your new pan set love how the handles are removable great set🥰❤. The chicken looks absolutely delicious oh yum.
I saw Becky @ Acre Homestead take a TON of her garlic & she just peeled, put in food processor & then measure out by small scoop, then froze...when a recipe calls for garlic she just plopped 1 or 2 frozen scoops frozen into a recipe!
That purple radish will likely get mushy when made into kimchi unless you consume soon. That raDish is better for fresh eating. I am your korean viewer ^^
I have to put garlic in the refrigerator in June and let it chill until September and plant. I am in zone 9 B. I got some seed garlic for half price last week to add to my leek garden. I watched some videos to find out how to grow it in my zone. So you will need to do some research. It looks like you have hard stem garlic. I have soft stem garlic from California which can grow here. Enjoyed watching you cook this recipe.
Happy Mother's Day Carolina, sure enjoy your channel! How is your mom doing? Now these pans I'm not sure about because of the handles, they might trip me up😀, I do like the smoothness inside, I cook with Pioneer Woman pans and they have the two things in the pan, and yea there a pain to clean! You are very Blessed with your food bank. We are a family of 4, my husband lost his job Feb2 they just cancel 2 shift. And I'm still looking, I'm a industrial machine sewer. And our oldest son is special needs. But the Lord will provide I know it! We have 1 food bank and you can go to it 1 a month, and get 10 items. You amaze me with all the food ideas🙂. Take care, Love Pam
If you have a lot oranges you can peel them and section them and put them in separate containers and freeze. My kid's liked them for good cool treat. I did the same with grapes.
Hi Carolina! Think your store is Rosauers, it’s pronounced (Rose- ours) if so they have good fried chicken! The oranges would be good made into marmalade too! Love all the garlic you have, I want some fresh to bake with olive oil into well well roasted, so good. Love the haul! Hope you guys are feeling better, the garlic and oranges should help with you immune systems! Hope you enjoy the rest of your evening, you and your family
I just that today too. Got my sprouted seeds put in planters. Then just for the heck of it; l even sprouted and apple seed. Now l live in an apartment. Haha and going to try and grow a apple tree.
Great video! I’d can those oranges up. Their is a current shortage of workers in Florida right now, and no one is wanting to replace the one who left, so I’m assuming in the winter months, the prices of oranges will be outrageous!! 😮
I looked up what a bushel is, as I have often wondered what it was, I knew it was a measure of something. This is what I found,- A bushel is an imperial and US customary unit of volume based upon an earlier measure of dry capacity. The old bushel is equal to 2 kennings, 4 pecks, or 8 dry gallons, and was used mostly for agricultural products, such as wheat. Hope that is of some help. Bananas are sold in bunches, sometimes called hands. Much love and respect from the South of England. xx
In Montana she has too short a growing season for planting garlic in the spring. Someone suggested if you have room in doors to put under grow lights that that would be a possibility. Primarily in Northern zones you need to plant in the fall at it over winter and then harvest in the next growing season. Yes to the person who stated you take the bulbs apart and plant just one clove.
I love your videos!! You're so inspiring to use what I have on hand and ive always been nervous to go to the food bank because I work 2 jobs but it makes sense that if we dont take what they have then it gets thrown away 😢 ...your kiddos are super cute also! 💕💕
When I get citrus I was and dry. I them zest it over a small bowl of sugar. Put the lid on and shake it well. I store in fridge then use it to bake with. I especially like it for pound cake and no wastte.
Take your oranges and make orange zest and then take the juice and make orange jam with it I do not like marmalade but I do like the jam I dehydrate the zest to save for later to add to all my other recipes
When I get oranges, I peel them and break into segments before freezing. I like to eat them frozen. Or add to smoothies. I also got sprouting garlic from the food bank. And looked up how to grow. It takes 9 months. So I'm growing them indoors under a grow light on a shelf that will be my herb garden once I put my tomatoes outside.
It would be cool if you could make orange marmalade and donate a few jars back to the food bank. Some people in your community don't have the skills to preserve, but they'd love the results. If the food bank can accept home canned items it would be a great result for them to have some of that stuff they get in bulk come back in a more universally usable format. My dad was stationed in Morocco in the late 50s. It still holds a place in his heart. I have a tagine that is used all around the Mediterranean for making stews. I'll have to try your recipe!
Unfortunately the food bank can not accept home canned goods. I have asked that before. It is a great idea though and I wish that was possible as well! They are talking about hosting cooking classes and I bet water bathing would go along great with those!
@@mamabairds i love seeing how you use and preserve the things you get in large quantities. As an experienced RU-vid creator I'm sure you could do a great class for community members to also be able to make use of these things. During Covid our church garden produced way more zucchini and tomatoes than we could give out in food parcels. A few good cooks in the congregation took the excess produce and some ground beef that was too much for the food bank freezer and made a bunch of spaghetti sauce which they canned. It couldn't be given out in food parcels, but members of the congregation could share with other members so we all got a big jar of sauce for Christmas that year. I think in the food parcels they gave out recipes and the produce and frozen meat so people could make their own sauce if they wanted. Summer produce tends to be abundant so tips for preservation are given out if people express interest. Now that we can get together again getting a group together to preserve seasonal products is a possibility. If donors can provide jars and other ingredients it could be a great community activity. Everybody who comes and participates goes home with some jam or sauce or whatever. I went to a fall soup making class at a community College and it was a blast. Cost $10 ,but you got to make and eat really good food. I'm sure you'll get a lot of interest if you do a class.
Garlic gets planted in the fall. Look up ways to get the cloves out of the garlic and wear gloves... that stuff in quantities can peel the skin off your hands. (Ask me how I know!) Less contact is better.
I had a coworker that made the best turkey burgers. She’d add diced onions and red peppers and tons of garlic powder and black pepper. They were amazing!
We love turkey burgers. My hubby likes putting French onion soup mix in burgers he got my whole family eating those burgers. We tried it with turkey burgers and thats good too! Our 2 year old likes turkey burgers but not so big on the beef burgers .
Lipton has a Golden Onion soup mix I used in my turkey burgers. On top of peppers and onion sautéed then mixed with soup mix, lots of seasonings, I found a Hawaiian marinade (in lieu of the W sauce or teriyaki sauce) has a hint of pineapple! So delicious! I make turkey meatloaf the same except I mix in stuffing and more water! Hubs likes it so much, we don’t as often have regular burgers (at least once a week before, now maybe once a month) cause turkey burgers rock so much we have them once a week.
Plant garlic in spring or fall it takes a year to grow to plant it were your not playing around in your garden. I have fall and spring . Garlic is a must and it's always good to test your grounds so sure plant one write it down on calendar and plant in fall then plant in spring. Always test your area look at me I'm in cold Oregon growing banana trees that fruit and pineapple guava shrubs that fruit these are left out side then I take my pineapple plants that have pineapple on then out in summer so sure . Grow
That looks like a soft neck garlic. It would probably not turn into a bulb by harvest time. Garlic needs to “dormant” to store a bulb for you. Most northern gardeners that can grow garlic successfully are growing hard neck varieties. I LOVE roasted garlic butter and chopped frozen garlic is so convenient! Good luck gardening! Also btw, if you peel it all at once don’t touch your eyes…
How amazing to get that big bag of raisins! That was a great haul. Your food bank there sounds fantastic Carolina, especially the fact that they take the time to grow produce to give back and also provide veggie seedlings🌱to encourage people to grow their own food too! So awesome!!
@@mamabairds well my cast iron isnt very deep so i use my stainless for stews and soups and chili things that require deeper pots. But when im searing meats cast iron is the way to go.
Use the vermicelli in place of rice in like a stir fried rice after you cooked it where it is not quite done since you will be adding the stir fry items to it and mixing that it to finish cooking the noodles. OR as a rice replacement tgat normally has a item out on top like sweet and sour chicken, beef and Brocoli etc. Or you can try making Bami which is a type of stir fried noodles. For the oranges zest the rinds before juicing and freeze dry the zest for best orange zest. Juice the oranges and can it there are many recipes with it or you can store it to drink. You could use the orange juice to make a ice cold beverage with frozen orange juice that has been crushed add a sprig of mint and put in the blender. The cooling sensation from the mint and the ice cold oranges juice will be great non-alcholic drink firca sumer bbq or for the adults you can add a shot of gin or vodka with a sprig of mintvas decoration and a straw over some crushed ice. You could make homemade orange gelatin like jello with 2 cups freshly squeezed juice from washed oranges 2 tablespoons gelatin 2 tablespoons honey, looks best if clover honey is used. Wash and cut oranges in half. Place a fine mesh strainer over a measuring cup or mixing bowl. Squeeze oranges until you have 2 cups of juice {see Notes below}. Pour juice into saucepan and sprinkle the gelatin on top. Stir with a whisk and then let sit for 3 to 5 minutes. Heat until the gelatin is dissolved over a medium heat. Turn on low. Add the honey and stir until it is completely dissolved as well. Remove from heat and pour into ice cube trays a mold a glass container or in jelly jars. Refrigerate and chill until completely set. If you havevwhipping cream make it up and put it on top for a dessert many young and old love but made out on natural ingredients. 😊 The frozen orange juice you can put in bottles to keep your cooler cold when you go camping. Samecwith a few with water. That way when it melts it can be used to cook or drink.
You ever think china laugh's at Americans for not washing rice. I never did tell friends told me to. I didn't want them to think I was wired being over but they helped me with my top favorite bean ball's oh my wow ever so so good. Sweet yum chewy and did I say yum.
I'm just east of you in the same growing zone. Garlic should be planted in the fall. Garlic powder or oil sounds great. Use the oranges to make marmalade. You can then use it for sandwiches or I like to use it for orange chicken. Pickled radishes are really great for tacos, on sandwiches or salads.
A bushel is a volume measure, the box the oranges are in is a bushel measure. Don't put raw garlic in oil, it's a botulism risk, vinegar is fine as the pH controls C. Botulinum, but you should only put dry ingredients in oil as you don't want to create a "wet", anaerobic environment.
I cooked in slowly in the oil for 30 minutes to cook the garlic and infuse the oil! What about honey and raw garlic? I heard that was ok. Thank you for all the information!
@@mamabairds if you are fermenting the garlic in the honey, it should be OK as you are lowering the pH (honey in general isn't recommended for infants under 12 months due to risk of infant botulism, but I'm sure you know that already). Cooked garlic in oil is probably OK if you have removed the moisture in the garlic during the process, but pressure canning it would be even better. The garlic in jars you can buy in the shops has been acidified for safety and usually retorted.
I like the pots but they do not look easy to keep clean with lots of little nooks and crannies to clean in and the covers look awkward. Good video though.
@@mamabairds hahahaha it's all good at first I thought it was me woke up at 5 to go water the garden on tbe homestead ans i said I will watch your video first then I wemt to your link and kept getting tge garlic video I was like oh heck I will go water the garden and come back must be to early to watch you tube after I kept clicking on the link after I came back inside I kept getting the same link 😆 then I looked at the link itself and it was a the same letters and numbers I was like oh it was the same link and it wasn't my thumb playing tricks on me 😆😆 I will check it out later when you fix it thank you. And your welcome have a great day take good care of yourself and your family
If you google tricks to food not sticking to stainless steel pans, it will give you the reason why it sticks and how to avoid it. I would suggest it because the more you scrub off stuck foods, the more porous you can make your pans causing them to stick worse. It is as simple as smart preheating of the pans or oil to avoid the problem completely. Just a FYI for your brand spankin new pans! Wahoo!
Add garlic to red wine vinegar. Great in soups, salads, sauces and fish. Make orange marmalade and candied orange peel with the skin. Just peel away the inside white pith.
That looks delicious, Carolina. Did the kids like it? I was wondering if you could freeze dry the oranges like a powder that you could use like you would a drink mix??? Nice haul! By the way…I love my cast iron too, but I have a set of stainless steel that I also love for certain things. I love the removable handles on that cookware! Great review 😊💞
I do not like ground turkey or chicken if i get that i mapke dog food with rice or sweet potpatoes any veggie. Nothing wastes i have tons of cast iron i do not use any anymore other than few sause pans
Hi Montana Gal I never miss your vedioes because you are fun to watch But you use lot fatty item's which I m not fan of All the best to your u tube channel
The only fat I used in this dish is garlic olive oil. Which other items where fatty? Chicken, beans, tomatoes, onions, brown rice...all seems healthy to me. But I know every views health different. Thanks for watching!
@@mamabairds I'm not talking about this episode You use lot of bacon lard cheese ect in your cooking Food taste good but not healthy If it's suits you it's okay Don't be offended I wish you health wealth and happiness
@Clotilda DCunha oh I see! Yes, I use what I have on hand, and I'm fortunate to have lots of bacon lard right now, so that's what I'm using! That's the perk of pantry cooking. You can swap out whatever ingredient you dont have or dont want to use and just use what you have on hand! I do use a lot of cheese...haha! Again, it is a personal preference. You cook what you and your family enjoy! Wishing you the best as well!
