To village elder and farmer Robert Chege in Kamae, Kenya, these cabbages are #MoreThanFood. They are a source of joy and pride as he works to alleviate hunger for his neighbors.
Chege volunteers at one of Food Banking Kenya’s four rural depots where hundreds of small-scale farmers offload surplus produce that they can’t eat or sell.
In return, the food bank provides them with staples like rice, cooking oil, and flour, and vegetables that are not easily grown in the region. A few times a week, the food bank collects all the surplus and brings it back to Nairobi, where food insecurity is acute and the fresh produce can go to good use.
