Killed 6 fish in a a few months. Started feeding 3 times a week, less water changes, sand and soil as substrate, planted aquarium and ‘NO chemicals. Never lost a fish since. Been 2 years now.

The two biggest things I took away from this channel is one, dealing with water changes and two feeding. Advice from father fish on just these two topics has totally changed my fish keeping experience. I have a heavily planted 90 gallon community tank and it is absolutely thriving I feed about three times a week and I have just stopped doing regular weekly water changes for the sake of changing water. I figured I'm going to stop doing regular water changes and start testing the water and will only change water if I have to. well it's been over a month now and the water quality is not changing, it's remaining the same as when I started. The tank is just over a year old now and I have to do very little to maintain it, it's as if the tank is almost taking care of itself. When it comes to maintaining my tank the best thing I ever did was listen to advice from father fish and I think it would serve other fish keepers out there well to do the same. Happy fish keeping everyone, Cheers! P.S. If your stressing out over your aquarium then I would advise you to start watching Father Fish's videos. He has provided the answers your looking for and it's free advice to boot. A big Thank You goes out to Father Fish for sharing his wealth of experience, it has been of great value to me and has made me a far better fish keeper and helped me find success in this hobby. And that my friends is my two cents worth.
@FatherFish

Well that is worth many bucks kosys. Thank you for the encouragement.
@lurklingX
@lurklingX 21 день назад
thanks, that is really the dream, a tank that does a lot of its own self maintenance. it would let me go bigger than i feel i could handle right now. i'm setting up a 40 gal that i plan to have pretty heavily planted. one because plants. lol. two because i think it enriches the tank inhabitants' experience. three, keeping the water in a better state for longer (and keeping fish safe.)
@kosys5338
@kosys5338 20 дней назад
@@lurklingX People ask me all the time what my secret is when they see my tanks and my answer is always the same. Plants, plants, plants no matter the size of the tank. You grow a tank full of healthy plants and I promise the rest will almost take care of itself. People would be amazed if they knew just how little work I actually do to maintain my tanks. You just got to give the plants a helping hand until they say OK we got this. Then all you have to do is help keep it all balanced. For me the work comes in getting the tank set up after that I let nature take over, she just happens to be better at it than I am lol.
@kosys5338
@kosys5338 20 дней назад
@@lurklingX Another little tip I would offer people is feeding. 90%+ of people in this hobby are over feeding their fish tanks and that is just a fact. Some will say if your feeding your fish 3 to 4 times a day then your over feeding your fish. I would go as far to say that if your feeding your fish every day, your feeding them too much. Now if you have a tank full of monster fish then that is obviously a different situation. If that is the case you probably don't have a tank full of plants either. I had no problem keeping a tank healthy but I did have problems keeping fish healthy until I stopped feeding them every day. I feed my fish once every other day now and rarely lose fish anymore. In fact they are spawning now like rabbits. Babies everywhere now. Something I'm going to have to address soon. See what happens when tanks get to healthy lol. Being advised to stop feeding my fish everyday by someone in this hobby was the single best piece of advice I have ever gotten in this hobby. Stop over feeding your fish people! Your fish will love you for it by living long healthy lives. And look their best while doing it. Happy fish keeping!

2 things that were particularly helpful: 1) you don't need diversity of food. 2) feed community tank 2x a week not daily. i always thought you want diversity since flake food and stuff is limited. and, maybe the feeding frequency depends on the fish, i'd just never heard that. i'll go look into it though. it would certainly keep the tank cleaner for longer.
@Firebird894
@Firebird894 Год назад
All I use to feed tiny baby fish is this and it costs nothing and takes almost no effort and has no risk of fowling the water. I keep buckets and tubs outside under the trees and grow moss and algae in them. I Keep a screen over to keep out bigger bugs dragonflies etc and I just put leaves bark and sticks in it. I throw a little grass clippings in now and then and a little bit of flake food but thats not needed I found it gets it going faster. When I have eggs when I am getting fish ready to breed or I have fry I take a clump of moss out of the tub algae and leaves and all stuck to it and throw it straight in the tank with a little bit of mud. Thats it once every week or 2 I put in a bit more or swap it out it has everything growing in it those babies need when they are first hatched for quite a while till they can eat bigger food. That is all I do and it grows them perfectly with no water changes hardly at all. I just have tubs with baby fish and eggs I do that and I start seeing fry in there and they grow and it takes little effort from me. When they look big enough I start giving them some 55% protien powdered up pellets and brine shrimp but I still do the moss from outside even for the breeders because they know it has food in it the babies can eat. It is that easy.

I’ve got a big tank for 2 years now that is doing okay but now i’m really motivated with getting it thriving the natural way! I will try to ignore my fish begging for food every time i walk by and start with feeding every other day. I will also get some sand in to put over the gravel followed by some dirt from the outside. Large fish only require food once a week or less. Their stored fats and slow metabolism allows them to eat occasionally and thrive. During breeding season the food increases and they build breeding material and put on fat.

Father Fish is correct when he says variety in food is not always a good thing. Nowadays I feed 1 staple food, 1 type of shrimp treat twice a week, and then frozen food once a week.

Nice video ff. Perhaps you could make a series out of it on how too cultivate different foods. Besides live foods it is i think worth mentioning that some fish need a good bit of algea and/or plant in their diets wich sometimes can be difficult for them to get from the aquarium itself or could be less then desireable. And a few will need to take in some wood.

Hello Father Fish. I’m thankful that I found your RU-vid channel. Someone in a Fb group, cheered your video about water quality. That you can use vitamin-c in your tap water. We have chlorine in our tap water. I have a 450 Liter aquarium and I change 200 Liter of water every week. I think that I over feeding my fish. They are always hungry, and I don’t want them die. I feed them every morning and evening. In the morning with dry food, and in the evening with frozen food. After this video I must change my food routine. That explains why my filters are so dirty too. Thanks one more time for a excellent video. Daniel from Sweden 🇸🇪😊🙏

Hello, how are you, I built an aquarium with your method and there are plants in it. I have about 30 fish and before I was very worried about high nitrates. I tested Nitrate one day and to my surprise it was almost in the 0-5 ppm range. For plants' need for NO3, I feed them 3 times a day and I decided not to change the water, I give additional potassium and iron fertilizers. Surprisingly, everything is going well.

@@FatherFish well, glad frozen exists. i could try and culture and feed some things but unfortunately for me (in this hobby, gardening, and also actual fishing..) i can't handle worms. at all. can deal with a ton of things outside of that so i guess you'd call it a phobia since it's immovable. hell, even doing frozen is going to be a challenge on bloodworms and stuff. *heave.* i did however push to do probably 3rd or 4th best and got one of those betta treat wheels and just have to blank my mind out. new neon green kilifish didn't want to eat and was spitting stuff out. tried a few things. FINALLY, he went for the dried daphnia. (online mentioned normal foods they eat and that gave me the idea). i guess he was pickier since he was stressed and new. damn cool fish. admittedly an impulse buy. then read how they like floating plants and leaf cover and i found some things to put in like betta leaves and a floater from another tank. he's a new man. no longer hiding so much and man he hits food like a torpedo lol. i've been watching your vids off and on. and i love the angle you take on fish husbandry. creating ecosystems not just for looks but to function as one and to start maintaining itself. my 1st big project is moving into a 40 gal. i've never had larger than 10 gal. i had one of your videos in mind for a long time, highly planted, maintaining itself when stuff gets up and running. and i'm hoping to at least get partially there. minimal water changes, or at least very reduced, and happy plants happy fish. anyway, thank you for your knowledge and especially the stuff on food this episode. :)

Try improving the biodiversity in the tank(ff has videos on that). But then find something like moss which will grow faster than they can eat, make sure to get as much of it as possible since it's really good for nitrates

My goldfish became way more active since i increased my biodiversity. They like hunting stuff believe it or not. My goldfish are absolute units, i only feed once every 4 days now, they eat off of the moss and microorganisms daily though. You should join the discord if you haven't already. There should be people more experienced with tanks than I. But i hope this little bit has helped you with the goldfish.

I have now 7 tanks in our home following your methods of building a lovely home for our fishes. My son Rope Sander showed me how to do this and I love it. I am coming to grips with the not feeding the fish every day and it is not easy, the question I have is feeding baby fish. Many of the fish I have now are quite young and how do I feed them ? The adult fish I get it. Please pass on some information to me about this concern of mine. Thank you.

Baby fish must eat daily, often continuusly. Live food is best for them and for the tank. microworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, scuds, etc.

Nice video father fish. I have some question for you I have apistogrammas in my tanks for long time. And i have struggled alot to keep them alive. Then i realize chemicals is the reason for their deaths. We have a small commuty here and we discover the TEA😂 some tea we drink really😂 adding tea to our tanks lower PH and add really good stuff both for plant and fishes. I wander what you think about adding tea to tanks. (Pls forgive my poor English)

Father Fish, thank you for this extremely important and enlightening video. I’ve got a 29 gallon planted deep substrate tank (with lots of leaf litter) with 2 young silver dollars, a young spiny eel, 2 red claw crabs and an African clawed frog. Yesterday as an experiment I dropped in about 2 dozen live worms (primarily in attempt to get their help in improving the substrate). The frog has so far eaten a few, the crabs chopped up a few and ate them, and the eel and silver dollars have been vigorously nibbling on them. Probably only one or two worms actually got into the substrate. The result is that I have about a dozen dead earthworms, some in segments, strewn across the bottom of the tank. The fish are continuing to snack on them. Clearly the experiment was a failure but should I immediately get these deceased worms out of the tank? Or should I let the fish continue to snack on them and let them decompose into the substrate? Am I risking overfeeding and also causing an ammonia spike with their decomposition and extra animal waste?
@FatherFish
@FatherFish Год назад
Push most of them into the substrate. Leave one or two for nibbling. When you feed worms cut them into bite size pieces so that the entire piece is swallowed.

Where I live commonly available types of dried fish food are dried daphnia, gammarus, shrimp and decapsulated brine shrimp eggs. Is it a good idea to feed fish with these? I am wondering because on the one hand, they are not live, they are dried, and they don't get artificially enriched with additional vitamins, but on the other, they are natural, they are not flakes or pellets. What would you say?
@FatherFish

Top is live. Second is frozen. Third is freeze dried. After that are prepared foods.

Father fish, a bit off topic but i have an outdoor eco system pond 5,000 litres with rocks, gravel and lots of plants. I used to feed the fish every other day but have started to feed them every day in the summer months and stop feeding altogether in the cold winter. I have goldfishes 12 - 14" (biggest ive ever seen), golden orfe/ide 12" and some tench and no koi. What would you suggest on the feeding pattern father fish?

i have a koi pond, and honestly they were good every other day. i noticed if i did daily they weren't as excited. and i figured they weren't as hungry. what's cool is after i took this house over and the pond/fish came with it... once i got more work done on the thing and plants in, they were a lot happier and even spawned last year. got 5 cute lil guys. (water lettuce and water hyacinth. but honestly they were kind of a pain as they duplicated too fast. PASS on water lettuce ever again. though, the fish would eat it but then it would get unsightly but also that it covered the surface. now, i just have 2 water lilies that after a year are now going WILD, grown over about 1/4-1/3 of the pond and this season went from one flower each to FOUR. and the koi love swimming through it and also getting shade and safety cover. i think putting them in is what really made them start spawning. i'd added the plants and they spawned even though there was a catastrophic failure of the pump system cuz the guy that built it was an idiot. WHY would you use nails in the wood crossbrace thing? and even like all different sizes and a lot were needle thin. i had put some k2 in there to increase the beneficial bacteria and even that minor bit of weight (hardly anything) made it nosedive, collapse, break plumbing.... and the plumbing was just as nonsensical (read: dumb). so i had to implement the 50 gal drum filter build i was going to do later as an upgrade. lost one of my favorites, and one other. took MONTHS to rebalance the beneficial bacteria and daily ammonia neutralizer and weekly water changes. god, the stress. anyhow, during the chaos and death, THAT's when they spawned, like what the hell....... lol. quick, it's the end of the world, let's shag! this year they did a few times and instead of seeing tadpole sized babies and watching them grow, they sure got a head start compared to last year. clocked 2 so far, and they are nearly an inch already. the tadpole sized ones were so small they didn't even have color. a lot of the pond runs itself and honestly has been fine even if not doing a change even every month. i try and do it by the month. (koi place estimated it's 900 gallons.... but idk i'm thinking more like 600. based on fill times and calculations i did.)
