@@cynthiaamitrano8915 Cats can still get chunky. Which will lead to health problems and possibly shortening his life, having a feeding schedule and set portions is part of owning a pet. Just because he’s “Not a dog” doesn’t mean his owners shouldn’t be responsible. :)
I love the fact that the owner is strict enough to keep him on healthy diet. I've seen people overfeeding their cats and happily calling them chonky when its actually obese. I've watched same issues in a show about uncontrollable cat, they get the cat more active by playing more with him. Maybe it triggered by their hunting instinct.
my cat was never happy with any food we gave him but stole potato chips and cold cuts, which due to sodium content, id never give him. I wished he were fat, i love the way fat cats look, sadly.
Trekkie is sooo lucky he has such tolerant humans who go the extra mile to make sure he is safe and isn't eating himself into a coma. That looks like a lot of work. I'm glad his humans feel like he's worth it.
@@ciscornBIG Then it's lucky you aren't Trekkie's human. It's entirely possible that he was starved at an early age and has issues regarding food because of it. If they can't train him out of it and you think "rehoming" is the best thing a person could do in the situation, then poor Trekkie would likely end up euthanized if it was left up to you. If someone is willing to work around his behavior and love him despite his issues and it's not personally affecting you in a negative way, maybe you should just be grateful that there are people out there that are willing to love a difficult cat and NOT criticize those same people. I don't know that I could handle a cat like Trekkie, myself. But I'm super appreciative of the people who can.
Came here to say that my cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism after having many of these symptoms including the hyperactivity, the obsession with food, the being really skinny and I didn't see this cat being vicious but my cat would also get really feisty. There's two forms of treatment for hyperthyroidism in cats, and I chose the i-151 iodine treatment which saved her life. So if your cat is acting like the one in this video might want to check the vet & test for hyperthyroidism. 😺💗
Because his ear is clipped, that means he was a stray and the city fixed him and clipped the ear and then released him. That means he's been living on his own as a scavenger for years. That's why he goes for the food.
Yes. I have a cat that only lived five months of his life on the streets but his habits have never left him. He’s inhales his food and then attempts to bury his bowl by flipping it or digging up my carpet 🤬 God love him though sweet boy ❤️
i thought that at first too, but if you look closely, it isn't clipped. the tip of that ear is just flopping down. it's interesting though, because i've never seen a cat with an ear like that
@@charitylenny9595 doesn’t matter. Cats are instinctual animals. Once their brain is hard wired for that it would take Jesus to undo 😂😂 I am probably the bougiest cat mom ever and my boy ain’t changing. 5 months living on the streets and he is a food MONGREL. Wants to bury and hide every time. And for four years he’s known he gets two meals like clockwork daily.
My cat is just like this! What tricks can I teach him? (He just knows to sit and to come when called) Bolognese and chicken tikka masala are surprising favorites.
@@halfassfashion a cat that sits and comes when called can probably learn to do laundry. I've never trained a cat but I'll bet you can find videos on here. I've trained pet rats and dogs and all I can say is that those that are highly motivated by food are easiest to train.
What an intrepid & smart cat My boy Chip is just like him Chip is a black domestic short hair He can open doors too First I thought putting treats on top of the fridge was enough. Nope. Chip climbed up there and knocked the treat bag to his brother Calvin. I came home to the ripped apart treat bag with opened sacks of cat treats. Occassionally I give the kitties some human food but they get the best cat food! Good dry cat food. Treats. Plus they get cans or pouches of Tiki Cat & Weruva. Have you seen Weruva BFF or Cats in the Kitchen wet food? It’s better quality than a lot of human food. It’s far better than most frozen t.v. Dinners. Now when I cook or eat Chip thinks he’s slick. He grabs at stuff too, which can be dangerous. Plus you have to make sure they don’t eat toxic foods like chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions & garlic. Just the other night I went to get a napkin and Chip stole a meatball from my spaghetti and meatballs. He grabbed it and was running away. He was livid when I caught him and took it away from him but it has onions in it. Him having a big meatball in his mouth is like us trying to hold a grapefruit in our mouths. He did the same thing with half a spring role which is just cabbage, carrots & rice noodles. He has incredible sense of smell too. He knows if leftovers one of the foods hes likes has been thrown in the trash. He dug up part of a spring roll I threw out from the garbage. Chip and Calvin are both smart, affectionate & loyal cats which I am grateful for. They are freaking naughty boys to the nth degree though. You can’t help but laugh. So please make sure you are careful with certain foods and your cats. Make sure they aren’t near hot liquids or foods. Also we need to empty those shelters! Adopt and save a life! Our cats and dogs can even help with your wellness. There is a reason we have them as support pets. We might save them but they can save us every day! 🐱+🐶 RULE!
@@eowyneadig7879 No, they actually spelled it right with ‘your’. If they spelled it “you’re” it wouldn’t make any sense. “What’s you are point?” Is what it would have read if they spelled it your way
That is one SMART cat! His problem solving ability is awesome. Hard to live with at times, maybe, but awesome. I have a smart cat but she is not at his level. Rest in peace Trekkie. There may never be another cat like you!
Tbh if he was a rescue/adopted he probably didn’t get to eat a lot and now he’s learned the “gotta eat everything I see”, hence why he’s so smart with containers, probably had to scavenge a lot (stray animals often learn to do this), if he wasn’t a stray he’s probably just very smart and greedy
My second cat is a rescue and she's obsessed with water. She has calmed down a bit after 2 years but still darts when she listens to the dog drinking water. Seriously that cat's piss is almost as clear as water from how much she drinks
@@paulop.7421 It could be diabetes when they drink a lot of water. I found one of mine was peeing more than the others. She was also drinking lots of water. Took her to the vet and she had diabetes. That's no fun to deal with if you get that diagnosis from the vet. You're testing them and feeding them on a strict diet. Your life is theirs..
Because you care about your cat you help her to keep her brain stimulated in a safe manner that will not get her burnt by the stove/oven and not have her hurting or fighting humans for their plate. You clearly care about your cat and her welfare , safety, happiness and treat her well. These people aren't helping this cat, it's just entertaining for the humans and it's teaching bad social skills.
I HATE people that HATE other people. The comment I respond to did not spread HATE. That is good. BUT! I get a lot of HATE comments on my amazing videos and I HATE it. Please don't start spreading HATE. Do I have to HATE you too, dear bu
The reason he’s so obsessed with food is because he has food insecurity. Based on his tipped ear it’s probably fair to say he was a feral/outdoor cat at some point in his life. Sadly most feral/outdoor cats don’t usually get fed enough or have to compete with other cats or animals for food. Having to compete for food can cause some cats to develop food insecurity, where they feel a manic need to eat anything and everything because they’re scared It’ll be taken away, or they won’t get enough.
I'm so glad someone acknowledged this in a response. My family has a dog like this who was a stray at one time. It's cute, but there's a PTSD in it, a desperation. He's also thin. They're saying, " No reason for him to act this way." I'm assuming they've tested for hyperthyroidism...
i would feed the poor kitteh then, until it was semi fat, i live with a cat here, he is a little fat, but i think thats ok! i'd rather have an animal thats small bit overweight, then underweight!
Yeah this couple definitely has no idea (or are in denial) that this cat needs some behavioral help. He must feel stressed all the time due to this food obsession and they are just playing it for jokes, or not even trying to properly stop him. This video was not funny, it was sad.
@@nolitimere11 Maybe stop assuming that they didn't do that. He could also be stray, which might be time where he didn't have much food, so it's reason why he is like this. He truly is lucky to have humans like this, who seems like they are taking care of him. Some other people would just put him away as this is very annoying, even though maybe not this cat's fault.
i had a foster just like this. got into literally everything. when i picked him up from the shelter he had every parasite imaginable. no matter how much he ate he never felt full. he had a lot of trauma around food we had to work with. so it's not their fault. no matter how much i you feed them they're just scared of starving again
I don't think it has so much to do with them being strays all the time, some cats just have this personality. My niece had a kitty named Pinky that she got from her uncle when his cat had kittens, so the cat was raised by my niece as soon as she was able to leave her mom and the cat was exactly like this. She would eat anything lol. My niece loves hot cheetos and would see the kitty getting into brand new bags of hot cheetos lol and ate them even though they were spicy. One time I was eating prickly pears at her house and Pinky stole half of one lol. Some cats are just food-obsessed!
The ending was absolute perfection….” I’ve literally never been fed ever” 😂😂 So glad the family has a sense of humor about the internet’s animal “experts” lol
This cat died. Had cancer. The overactive appetite was a symptom. The video opens by saying there was medical reason to explain his appetite, but in fact there was, and the owners should have gotten him checked out.
That is one clever, determined , and entertaining cat. Don’t know how you keep him off hot stove tops, but assume you’ve worked out an acceptable arrangement with him on that front.
@Nathan Taffijn, gingers are different. They are as mad as a box of frogs. Also, he is a cat not a dog, his terms his rules he wants food regardless where it is he must have it. This is food obsession .
I wouldn't want to accept food spread everywhere all over in my whole house or clean after my pet every 5 mins. If you provide the cat with more than enough food in a separate room (and ONLY in the separate room), the cat should be fine. Even cats need some rules. Why do so many people defer to cats' tantrums? Guys, it is YOUR flat not the cat's.
@@itsok1823 Something tells me you don't have a cat, they are not dogs. You can train them only so far and that's why they are wonderful because they have a mind of their own. Try feeding a finicky cat. >^..^
When my ginger began acting this way, we had him tested for diabetes. He was on insulin for 10 years before he passed at the age of 17. I still miss him everyday.
You are a good cat parent and I’m sorry for your loss, I’m sure he’s chilling at Rainbow Bridge right now with all the other fur babies, where the weather is always perfect for sunbathing and the bowl is always full while he waits for you 💙🐱💙
I'm sure he's been tested more than likely he's been through every test because you can tell they love their cat with all of their heart and would do anything for him so more than likely he has been tested.
My cat had a thyroid condition and she was slowly starving to death, even though she was on medication, they lose weight rapidly, but he doesn't look like he's losing weight. Unfortunately, he did pass away from a condition, and it was because of the reason he ate so much, I feel so sad for this cat and his family.
Glad you got him on medication, and he had a long life My Miss Kitty developed feline peritonitis, and there was nothing to be done. I miss her everyday, too.😿
Claycat4 not necessarily, our cat Jojo was definitely not a rescue and got his ass kicked by the neighbour's cat and wound up with a clipped ear from that fight. Maybe the same happened to Trekkie?
I rescued a stray Siamese boy who was this food obsessed and could open packages. I had essentially "raccoon proofed" my kitchen. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who had to constantly come up with new ways to keep a cat out of food!
I'm helping stray cats a lot of times and sadly this is exactly their behaviour (most of them), maybe this cat was a stray before.. Glad now he's living with such a loving family❤️💕
So sad 😭 Yes I had a cat with this behaviour too, he had been living outdoors for some years not knowing where his next meal was coming from before he came to live with us, but he was the most loving kitty I’ve ever known.
Our cat was like that, too. He'd even get to a bread loaf, dig it out, and tear open the wrapping to eat the bread. Turned out he had a tape worm. Took two treatments to get it all out. It took time for him to heal but afterwards he stopped doing that.
Was he starved as a kitten? I rescued a kitten who was malnourished and starved. She is letting go of food obsessed behavior bit by bit as she grows in security. My brother had a dog with a very similar story,
My cat was like that. Born on the streets and despite being tiny and thin she had a phase where she'd eat her own weight in ham. It was cooked ham that set her off. Wore off after a few months. This one seems to be a bit more extreme case.
It's really sad that he passed away. My cat had a thyroid condition and she was slowly starving to death over time. Even though she was on medication, she lost weight rapidly and was hungry. All of the time, it was horrible, she went through a lot before she died and I had to put her down, which absolutely destroyed me because that was my little girl, but more than likely these people knew so we just don't know because it was a 3 minute video, if they knew or not, but they probably did. I feel so sad for the cat.
Food obsession in cats can happen for several reasons. It’s NOT because of their personality. Usually it’s because they didn’t have access to enough food while very young. The cure is to always leave food out in their bowl. They will over eat at first, but when it hits them they won’t be going hungry, they will eat normally. I rescued two cats with this issue.
@@pennylane4471 No they didn't. Even with feral cats, the only way to "re-train" them is getting them used to scheduled meals (with plenty of food available each time you feed), supplementing the food with extra nutrients and probiotics; exercise and occupying them plenty and potentially pheremone therapy. Our cats also have access to kibble at all times and eat when they feel like it, but this doesn't work for all cats and some might get obese. It's also an idea to regulate the hunger though in the first few weeks, if the scheduled feeding doesn't work. ADDITION: I just read he had cancer which is another reason to explain excessive hunger!
We have one like that. He gets into EVERYTHING and drives us half crazy, but he's also the SWEETEST, most AFFECTIONATE cat I've ever met in my life, so it's impossible to stay upset with him. I think he knows that and uses it to his advantage, but I have no proof. 🥰😻
I had a cat named Cricket, who I took in with all his litter mates when he was 2 wks old. He was exactly like this. Best cat I ever had. Loved baked goods!
I think this cat could be a former feral who didn’t used to know where his next meal was coming from! That’s what his ear makes me think, that he came out of a feral colony.
That's right, when they catch and spay or neuter a feral cat, they snip off the tip of their ear so they don't have to go through all that process again. I think you are exactly right. He's been through starvation and now is stuck on "FIND FOOD" mode. I had a rescue dog like that. It happens to people too. Periods of severe malnutrition can get people stuck in 'find food' mode. If you feed kids junk food with nothing but empty calories, it happens to them too. It's sad this issue isn't recognized as a real and serious issue.
This cat died. Had cancer. The overactive appetite was a symptom. The video opens by saying there was medical reason to explain his appetite, but in fact there was, and the owners should have gotten him checked out.

We had a cat like this, his name was Jerry. We rescued him from someone's basement. He only ate what he scavenged and he got fed a little dry food once a day is what we found out. He always acted like he was starving, I believe he was terrified of not having enough food on a regular basis. The poor thing...we always kept his food dish full so that he never had to worry about that again. He's since passed away, and we miss him terribly. 😢 This cat here is little more obsessed than Jerry was though. Lol

I thought the same thing...this cat suffers from food insecurity fear. He must have been starved previously : ( That is why he attacks food and gets whatever he can. Bless this family for taking him in but it's not a laughing matter. He's scared of not eating.
I named my cat "engineer". He learns to open everything on his own: doors (even the slide door), kitchen cabinet, etc. Now even the AC, he would just go there and explore things inside using his feet. Luckily it was always in my sight so no big worry.
Me too, our cat jumped onto our cooktop when it was still hot. Luckily she was ok, but we are now diligent of putting a lid over the hot burner until it cools off. She has never jumped up there again, but just in case. I’m sure they lock him up when they are boiling things.
@@shelliecornatzer i mean, i doubt it... but odds are the cat just wouldnt do that. the boiling water and the hot steam would likely be all the warning the cat would need... always a risk though i suppose.

Yeah that was my thought throughout the video, was the risk of harm to both cat & human seemed extremely high, ie a pot of something hot being pulled off a stove, or just a heavy pot or pan in general, jumping on a hot burner etc... getting into food that could be harmful...I love the Dodo but I didn't find this video enjoyable, or positive.
"welcome to the impossible mission force. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to retrieve food from every container in the house." Trekkie: "you need to rethink your definition of 'impossible'." (Burp)
Food-stress/insecurity can be a real thing for some cats, especially those that were rescued or came from a place where they had to compete with other cats for food.
I wonder if he's more insecure because he's sharing the household with other cats, when he might be less stressed if he was the only kitty/pet? I'm sure the owners knew what they were doing, but the poor bud does seem rather stressed
When did that happen??? Oh, NO!!! Maybe he was "food motivated" because the cancer was stealing any and all nutrition in order for the horrible tumors to grow. How enormously sad! I'm broken-hearted to hear Trekkie passed away. What a tragedy. I'm so sorry for his parents. They must miss him so much. 😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥
Just read some comments and they said that Trekkie passed. I am so sorry for your loss. Please take some comfort that thanks to this video, millions of people will get to know Trekkie while being entertained in the process. That is quite a legacy! .

what's interesting is that he doesn't seem to be overweight despite being food crazy. His clipped ear also indicate being a former stray and would explain his behavior.
@@bobograndman I've seen the specs on a cat feeder like that one; about a half cup is the smallest dump they will set for, unless you load it individually for each feeding. And our "Lady of the Voice" said the feeder feeds five times a day- that would be two and a half cups of cat food. I would suspect Trekkie and his buddy are both from feral backgrounds- the second cat looked to be a binge eater too. And not skinny either. Looked like they got just the sort of home to flourish in! Had three cats and two dogs that would steal from plates. Moved out and got a new cat. She won’t touch human food (six months old, am the second owner, so not the result of training!!) even if given it. I’ve tried cat treats, ham, turkey, etc. She likes her cat food and that’s it. It’s kind of nice being able to leave food on the recliner while I use the restroom or get a soda and coming back to it untouched. HOWEVER, she wants to sniff it. She will not eat it but she gets offended if I don’t let her sniff it.
I had a cat, usually quite timid and not at all overweight, actually surprise me by grabbing a bite of pork roast right out of my mouth once. Just climbed up my chest and stuck her head in my surprised open mouth and just took it! Wonderful of these people to be so patient and understanding with this one.
He's a beautiful ginger that's why lol I have had gingers all my life and no matter the personality, they really put the curiosity in cat. They are so inquisitive and adaptable. They can be so independent and sweet they always get up to something.
Oh my gosh!! This is my cat too !! Drives me crazy , it's never a dull moment for sure. I've had him, his sister and his mom since he was 4 weeks old and I fostered them, then adopted them all. He's is the only one crazy for food , anyones and everyone's! He even likes to eat anything made of silicone so we have to lock all that up as well !!
This cat is precious, but this makes me appreciate even more my very well mannered cat who will wait until I feed her and always waits for my permission to start eating.
My cat did the same thing started feeding him raw and every part of the body of an animal like the bone marrow and tendons, he stopped doing it after also seemed calmer and more comfortable with his spine
My cat used to be like this. He was a former stray and had an extreme food obsession. Getting a few Petsafe SSSCAT air canisters will help keep cats off counters and other places you want them to stay away from. Also, feed them at regular times and maintain that routine. And, like others said, utilize food puzzles and other toys filled with treats.
If anyone else has a cat like this, don't reward the behavior by letting them eat whatever food they stole, especially around the stove. That could be so dangerous. Maybe consider a small spray bottle of water to keep the cat away, putting rolling tubes or foil around the oven door handles so they can't be climbed on.
spray bottles do not get at the core of the issue, it just creates a negative association which could go any way (towards water, your hand, bottles, etc) they just have to actually be strict. they stop him a little then let him go. its really an owner problem. the cats just being a cat
@@CatsAndPokemon right, but in a situation where the cat could severely burn itself or knock boiling food onto someone, there may not be time for a manners lesson
Practice “cooking” with the gas off but with the pans and ingredients out to simulate a real cooking time, and take the cat down from the table every time it climbs up and reward it with little treats when it’s on the floor. It positively reinforces the cat that the food comes when it’s on the floor, not when it’s scavenging on top of the stove. When they’re actually cooking they need to be more strict and not laugh about it (I’m not saying these owners don’t take the health hazards seriously, just a general warning). Get the cat off the stove or the table, or any platforms in the kitchen area. There’s no need for spray bottles if owners trained with their cats and dogs whenever it’s NOT cooking time.
@@CatsAndPokemon It's definitely an owner problem. They do not discourage his behavior at all. They laugh at him, let him do whatever he wants, even if they see that he is about to do something bad. They even held that milk bottle for him to open. Really what else do you expect that cat to do?
Spray bottle is now considered animal abuse. I don't know why they just don't put him in a room that he can't get out of? Then let him out when they are done eating and dinner is put away.
Trekkie is a food container HACKER. It looks like he does it more for the challenge and to demonstrate his superior intelligence, than for the food reward. Maybe he could find employment with a security company, testing their vaults and safeguarding protocols.
R.I.P. Sweet❤Kitty, No hunger in Heaven!! [ Seriously tho, I think that he was *probably so mentally anxious & stressed* that he could have benefited from medication. Once you stop laughing, you start to wonder about his *quality of life*... Sweet Trekkie, Gone, but not forgotten!! ]
Yea it's Food insecurity. They're scared that the food will be taken away or wondering who knows when they'll see food again so they start obsessing over eating anything their paws can get on.
I think there's some genetic condition that makes some cats ravenous. (I remember reading) my cat was like this. Hand raised from a kitten, never went without but was an insatiable maniac for food. He didn't like to drink either. I had to mix wet food in a bowl of water to keep him from getting dehydrated. Anything less than very warm or hot water and he'd refuse and if I didn't mash it he'd try to drag it out of the water or take bites avoiding it. He was a character the things he'd get into.
Gingers have a gene that make them love food. You can Google that. Very interesting. He literally cannot help himself because it's part of his genetics!😆
My cat started doing these things after being 'normal' for 8 years. She was food obsessed and could never get full. I took her to the vet and they checked her for everything. Turns out she has thyroid issues which makes her ravenous. If I forget even one dose, she reverts back to this behavior. She isn't 100%, but every day is a little better. Also, it looks like the feeder doesn't give them much food. Are you sure they aren't just hungry?
He’s the cutest.. he’s such a mood 🤣 I have to bring food and water right in front of my cat in order for her to eat.. she literally will not step a few inches to her bowls.. no joke.. she is that spoiled! I could imagine how entertaining that household is with Trekkie ❤️
