For anyone just starting out, buy what you eat! Also take $5 a week to buy items to stock up on and definitely don't forget the spices. Depending on the store, $5 can buy a lot of extras. And rotate it out.
$5.00 Won't buy Crap!! At this rate, it will take you Years and Years to build up a Good Supply. If your just "Getting Started" it's already Too Late!! Sorry!!

I absolutely love your pantry and the other spaces throughout your home kitchen where you have short term and long-term storage for food. The pantry that you redid is gorgeous can’t say enough about it. I love stuff like that. . That’s why I paused the video sometimes and just stare in aww! I can sort it out in my head and get ideas from what you’ve done. Their ideas not copycats because I don’t have the same space you do.. Hope you get to feeling better soon. Certainly no fun being sick. Take care of yourself and we’ll see you when you get better.
My best advice is only buy what you will actually eat. We learned this the hard way. I'm sure alot of people found this out also. Mac and cheese is a must. Not the powder kind. Variety of chips and crackers, all sorts of spices and sauces for tons of flavor, pasta, all our musts. We found out we don't use canned tomatoes, or canned beans except refried. That surprised us. Love your videos. Your pantry is great.
How I’m aspiring to be once my husband and I buy our first house. We live in a studio and I’m currently just growing tomatoes but I want my own homestead and I want to preserve my food like this. You have such a gorgeous pantry and your kids will absolutely appreciate you cooking delicious homemade organic foods. May God bless you and your family! ❤
Your new pantry ahekves look amazing. If you hate that label on the kale jar then try lemon essential oil. I've had great luck removing the sticky backing of labels off of jars with it. Also if you are worried something may fall off of the shelves I've seen people put a bungee cord across each shelf. Apparently it works great.
I feel so bad and I am shocked your light bill is so high when you use your freeze dryer! I did not see significant increase over $30 a month when I use it regularly. Have you had someone look into this for you? Also, your pantry is so well organized, it is beautiful!
Thank you so much! Our electrician who works for my husband came out when he installed the dedicated 20 Amp circuit for the freeze dryer. He was also out recently for some other projects, but we didn't mention anything to him. We are going to go into the details on our next electric bill. I've heard people say they did not see much increase, and I have heard people say their bill to run theirs was higher than ours, so it'll be interesting to see the breakdown of the details. I think a lot may have to do with location and what type of energy peoples homes run off of. We will be doing a video on our situation soon!
@@rockymountainhomesteadangela I had the same reaction! We haven't noticed a difference in our bill. I hate that for you! Freeze drying has been a game changer for preserving my garden harvest. I would love to see your update on this.
You have really stocked up nicely for your family. Everything looks great & very well organized. Hopefully this will help you with your cooking. Thanks for sharing!❤
Oh it was SO funny. I seriously thought it was sugar and when he spit it out and asked me if it was a prank I was so confused. Then it hit me all at once - the unlabeled bucket, it not dissolving normally and the face he made drinking it!! Ooops ha ha
Great food storage -- where are all your empty canning jars, the canner, the big water bath pot, the crock pot, the cast iron, etc.??? Love seeing your organizational skills.
Thank you! I keep all of those things in our mechanical room. We have a good amount of space down there. The cast irons I have are hanging on the log wall in our dining room near the dinner table.
First time seeing your channel! I absolutely love your beautiful pantry and how well you organized everything! I’m taking notes for when I have a house with a pantry and for now with just my kitchen cupboards!
I was canning peaches and mixed up my unlabeled salt and sugar. Thankfully, I caught it before I canned it. I had to soak and rinse the peaches. I was able to save them and can them just fine. My dad was staying with us and surprised us with French toast. He said I was lucky that he sniffed my unlabled spices because we almost got paprika instead of cinnamon. My husband put sugar sprinkles in his dad's coffee instead of sugar. I now label. 😂
@@rockymountainhomesteadangelaI learned the hard way. Bought a big bag of walnuts and the oils turned them rancid.😢 Had to throw the whole bag away. What a waste.🤦🏻♀️
You have a beautiful pantry, and with teenagers in the house all that food should last you about 3 weeks.😆Also, thanks for letting us know how much it costs to run the freeze dryer. I've been wondering about the cost for some time.
Thank you so much! It's sad but very accurate. I used to have a years worth of food.... not so much these days 😅 we will be doing a video next electric bill with more details on the freeze dryer. Nobody seems to share that detail I've noticed. Hopefully, it'll be helpful for others.
Beautiful!! Quick tip- take baking soda and oil(the only thing I use a cheap vegetable oil for LOL) mix it into a paste, let it sit for 10-15 minutes on the sticky residue of a label and then scrub the rest off.
This past summer, I made my own ketchup for the first time. It doesn't have the same consistency as mass produced ketchup, but.......as long as I can keep growing my own tomatoes, i'll never go back to store bought ketchup. Oh my goodness? Homemade is the bomb!!!
I'm still watching and excited! But, woah! Every other review of freeze driers has said that running it was cost effective. Have you heard those reviews, too?
Thank you for still watching! We're going to do a video on the cost with our next electric bill and go over more details. But running it for a week did increase our bill $200 for sure!!
Wow! I hooked mine to a watt meter, and it costs me less than $3 a load. I haven’t seen any noticeable increases in my electric bill when running mine. Perhaps have a conversation with your power company.
I too only use glass .. True story I had some oaks -Road Oaks in a plastic tub and when I went to go get it and it was a brand new bag or box of oatmeal. It was all moldy so I threw it out and I’m using that plastic tub for garden fertilizer but I end up buying big mason jars the gallon ones or half quart half gallon and I just now because Glass is much better than the plastic. 🌱
I never noticed that powdered garlic and ginger are the same color until one Thanksgiving pie-making session. Yep. I totally get you on the need to label your supplies.
Off the subject but that’s a beautiful kitchen you have. I can’t wait to update my kitchen when I can afford it. I spend so much time in my kitchen so it’s going to be great when that time comes! Your house and pantry are just lovely.
I added salt to my tea once as well. My husband had the same reaction as your husband did. I quickly made sure my salt bucket was properly labeled. I never made that mistake again!
Thank you! I love to throw the celery into soups, stews, and roasts. I sometimes sautee it for homemade stuffing with the onions and butter in the stove. The hot liquid reconstitutes the celery on its own. If you want to reconstitute it on its own, I just put it in a bowl of boiling water for 10-15 min. 😊
Beautiful pantry. I laughed at your story about the sweet tea with salt. I remember about 45 years ago, I made a Mississippi Mud Cake with mom’s canning salt that for some reason she had stored in the Sugar canister. It was a huge disappointment. 😂
Oh, I would have been disappointed, too. Especially if I was expecting to eat cake! 😋 Those stories are always funny to look back on, but not in the moment 😂
Your pantry is beautiful! As far as the cost of your freeze dryer electric bill is really high. I have two mediums (wish I would of just got the large) and do really long runs and really don't notice much of a difference. My daughter has the large and has never said anything about her electric bill. I love your channel; my daughter gifted me with 5 grandkids. I do monthly pickups from Azure Standard and you gave me great ideas for the kids, I love the organic snacks they have. My pick up is tomorrow so I'll be throwing in some (all frozen and chopped) onions, celery and mixed peppers in the freeze dryers. God Bless!
Tears ago when I worked a night shift my husband decided to help me out with the canning. I had two boxes of peaches so he couldn't find the sugar and I had a gallon container of salt in the bottom shelf not labeled. Forty two quarts later and down in the basement panty my loving husband showed me his surprise for me. He mentioned that we were out of sugar but he found a gallon down on the bottom shelf. I had come home with a 50 lb bag of sugar. We had to throw it all out and my darling husband will only can anything if I'm home.LOL
@JEHomestead Thank you so much!! We did speak to the electrician my husband uses on his jobs. He said because it's such a high ampage (ours is a size large) and it's the one that needs the dedicated circuit. It has a lot to do with using it during peak hours. Every place has different costs for electricity. Some places don't even have peak hours where they charge more, but we do. Ours is a high cost, so if I run mine for a couple of days straight, we see a jump in our bill. Of course, we didn't know this until we bought and used ours because very few people have made that complaint about it. I have met others who have the same issues with their bills. I think it all has to do with location.
Roast in a jar is the best! Chuck roast, Boston butt pork, leg of lamb. Trim fat, cut chunks to fit thru jar mouth. Dry seasonings [salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, steak seasonings, etc] on each side. Sizzling hot pan, SEAR every side. 1" broth in 🫙, stuff 🫙, push it down! Extra room?, add some liquid-makes great gravy starter. Process. Just mom and me, a qt will give us 4 skimpy servings of meat, because I do add more liquid rather than packing it in. (Just bought a saurkraut pounder.) Ground beef, I add a jar of black beans and lentils on taco night, plain lentils for Italian or shepherds pie. 😊 Hawaiian-style Chinese. SPAM, cube it and sear it; drained can of 🍍 chunks, cut smaller, sear in same pan. Stir fry veges, fried rice. Sweet&sour sauce.
I watch our electric bill closely, we have not had much increase do to running our freeze dryer. Ours run daily. You may want to attach a meter to test usage.
There's no need to. There were no other changes to the way we do things other than running the freeze dryer. We run multiple washers and dryers every day, multiple fridges and freezers and we are home mostly all day so we run more things than most homes and we've never had high electric bills. My husband and I plan to do a video sharing more details on the actual costs for us running a freeze dryer with our next bill.
Not sure the size you have but running it daily... I can't imagine it not increasing your electric bill significantly!! We have the large size freeze dryer, which required it's own 20 Amp circuit because it draws up to 16 amps per hour(more than 1500 watts)
Wow thats super impressive!!! Lots of work to fill those shelves! Do you have measurements for veggies & seasonings, for your soup mix? That's a great idea!!
Oh my I did the same thing with salt. When I was young I made chocolate chip cookies. My mom had bulk items in bags. I took what I thought was sugar in an unlabeled bag which was salt. I proceeded to have my neighbor try one of my cookies before I did. Oh how embarrassing.
Great job on your organization! I have a good sized pantry and it’s fairly stocked, not like yours since there’s only 3 of us, but enough to keep us for a while. I don’t cook as much as I should though. But I’m 70. Not as much energy as you have unfortunately! I do make homemade vanilla. I can only imagine getting a huge gulp of salty tea! I have heard of people getting salt and sugar mixed up when making a cake though! Ick!
I LOVE your pantry, doll! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ You did a great job! I beg you NOT to eat ramen noodles when you do not feel well. That is the worst pasta you could ever put into your body. You would actually heal drinking your chicken broth.
Being that I used to have it when I was little I'm not a fan of spam either however the 25% less salt is not bad. Definitely something I would keep in the pantry along with other canned/ potted meats in my opinion
Ours is the large one. I'm almost positive. It needed the dedicated 20-amp circuit. We're going to be looking at the details on our next electric bill and running it by the electrician my husband uses.
Thank you! I always admired people who knew these skills and lived a more self-sufficient lifestyle. I was never taught any of these skills, so I've spent much time over the past few years learning them. I truly find joy in them! ❤️
I'm not a fan of Alfredo sauce in general personally, but this is the only kind I will eat. My family enjoys it a lot, and it's quick to make up. Three of my kids can make it themselves it's so easy! We always keep some on hand.
I was also taken back because I have one and my bill doesn’t fluctuate much. It’s also good to note that most of us who use a freeze dryer also freeze things first in the freezer to speed the process!
You could do a giveaway to your viewers for those food items you do not want! That would be fun! Then the winner could pay the shipping. Just a thought. :)
I've canned ground beef for years. The texture is slightly more tender, I would say. The taste is fine. I've never eaten it plain, but I don't notice anything off with it. I use it in enchiladas, tacos, Korean beef rice bowls, and baked ziti, just to name a few.
Bună... aş avea o rugăminte si te-aş ruga sa îmi răspunzi...cum pregăteşti carnea la borcan?ai vrea te rog să îmi explici?aş dori să fac şi eu. Te salut şi te înbrățişez
These are older videos of mine, but they may be helpful. I will be canning a lot of meat soon and will make a newer video canning different types of meats. 🌻 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TKcBzf-8sBE.htmlsi=-vp7N5dQpZwF2LoA ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jqJ99QwHY3E.html
The one gallon and half gallon glass jars with the metal screw on lids were right under $200 total for those 48 glass jars. The mason jars I dont count because I've canned for years and reused the same jars over and over. It costs less having glass than the health risks that come with storing food in plastic, which is what I stored things in before.
Hello 👋🏼 from Chicago 😊 I am absolutely dumbfounded by your hard work with your food pantry and organization and everything you’re doing!! I’ve never been so impressed by a video. I was wondering where you purchased the half gallon & gallon glass containers! TIA 😊
You show this for food security, but might be risking your security when people you know shows up. Or people who figure out where you live shows up. I'm not trying to be rude, it's just so many people show what & how much they have, which when it hits the fan, and people need to feed their families and can't, will be heading your way, and every along with every other homesteaders home to take what ya'll have worked hard to get. Sadly there are so many people who don't believe things are going to get bad. So they are not worried abt stocking up, on anything. It's wonderful that there are women who want to inspire others, but they show too much. Just my opinion. Please stay safe.
I agree to a degree. I'm not worried about it because people who stock up on food usually stock up for self-defense, too. We've seen bad times here with major flooding and people stranded for weeks in their homes. The communities nearby came together, and everyone emptied their freezers due to no power and they had bbqs and put together everything they had. I've learned over the past couple of years that some people think the worst of humanity and that everyone's out to get them. Lots of fear mongering channels these days, many I used to watch myself and no longer do. Fear controls people, and many of those videos put me in a very unhealthy mindset and took a toll on me. Those channels make a ton off of people and cause people to make rash decisions off of the emotion of fear. They spin and cycle the same stuff. Eventually things will get much worse, it says it in the bible. I'm not prepared for armegadon or nuclear and do not plan to be. I wouldn't want to survive that. Many who think they are prepped enough to survive it wouldn't make it either. Plus our community has plans in place if anyone from the city ever tried to come here with bad intentions.
@@rockymountainhomesteadangela I wasn't trying to fear monger. I started not long ago watching pepper videos. Wow, they have mastered the art of fear mongering. I stopped watching them as, like you said, it wasn't healthy to do. I hope your community is good at not spreading it too much on what they have either. I think people are typically safe from their neighbors. It's the outsiders that we have to be on guard with. We have millions of people that gave entered our country. They don't have the same standards that many as Americans have. I truly believe that if we do our best to provide for our families, the Lord will protect us. Fortunately/unfortunately I don't have a lot stored. I'm older, and a widow, so I can't afford to stock up much. I'm lucky if I have a 3 month supply of food. But again, the Lord knows my situation, and as long as he knows I'm doing my best, He will make up the difference. Your pantry is gorgeous. You should be proud of all that you and your husband has done to provide for your family. One suggestion on the canned goods that you talked abt getting rid of, can I suggest hanging on to them as emergency food. Or for bartering with at some point. Canned food is better than no food. I pray that you and your family will always be protected. 🙏❤️🤗
Oh, I totally did not mean you as far as fear mongering! You have very legit points in your comment. We have much corruption in our country and even more flooding through our borders daily. We have many ways chaos can unfold right now and affect us all. I am very awake to what's going on. Like I said, I've been on the fence with the whole pantry video thing. I take that risk hoping to awake and inspire others to be aware that pantries are not supposed to be pinterest worthy shrines that are just for show. They are supposed to be functional and cycled through and should have all the main staples to cook with should any type of emergency occur. I appreciate your comment, and with inflation right now, I think we are all trying to do the best we can with stocking up our homes. We can all only do our best! God bless ❤️
I do get it and the importance of being a gray man. I want to encourage others on the importance of food storage and give others that are new to it some tips and ideas of what to store and how to store. I wouldn't put this out there if I was not completely capable of defending our home. I do appreciate your comment and perspective on this.
I literally gasped when you opened your pantry door. Your set up is amazing! I was surprised to hear that the freeze dryer raises electric bill that much. No one is talking about that part. We will be empty nesters this fall so one would be overkill for us at this point.
Thank you so much!! We were surprised when we received the bills on the months we've ran it. Our next bill, I will try to do a video with more detail on it. I agree. It is an important detail being left out that could be a make or break for people.
We are off grid and rely solely on solar with a backup propane generator. We can only use our freeze drier in the summer when we have abundant sun because otherwise we’d be paying so much in propane. So it only makes sense for us to freeze dry certain things otherwise it’s cost prohibitive.
The sweet tea story! 😂 I’m a Southern girl and I promise you, that has happened to the best of us. (It’s funny in hindsight, but not at the moment-especially for the person who takes the first “sip”!) Beautiful pantry!
