To alleviate the burden of soaring food prices faced by Nigerians since he took office last year, President Bola Tinubu has approved duty-free importation of key staple foods like rice, beans, wheat, maize, and cowpeas for the next 150 days.
According to the president's spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, this measure will be implemented over the next 6 months. Agriculture Minister Abba Kyari stated that the duty-free import window covers these essential food commodities.
Nigerians have been grappling with skyrocketing food costs since the president removed fuel subsidies and allowed the naira to float against other currencies in 2023. For instance, the price of a 50kg bag of rice soared from around 20,000 naira to over 70,000 naira within a year.
