I don't have a rack, so I put the Brompton in the supermarket trolly, as you do. There is just enough space remaining in the trolly to put the shopping itself, plus the T-bag. Another thing. I have noticed that I always get an audience for the folding and trolly stashing operations, and another, when it is time to lift out, unfold, load up, and go. And then there are the people who ask you to do it AGAIN, because they missed it the first time!

Not had that before but I do find I get a few looks every now and then when shopping. I do get asked a few times about the folding normally outside work though 😀 Think that’s the easiest method I have found though. Sometimes I just pull it along behind me now if I don’t need much 👍

I prefer to use the Brompton as my shopping cart. It’s super fun to just unfold it with the shopping 🛍️ and roll away! I’m very short 😢 , only 5 ft! and would find it difficult to lift the folded Brompton over the shopping cart. Small people problem 😮

I bought a telescopic extender and bigger EazyWheels because I didn't want a rack. Using the handlebars it is easy now to roll the folded bike over any surface and it is untippable. I haven't been brave enough to use it as a shopping trolley, but if that is your aim, then I would recommend going this way for sure.

Either write upper mgt at Stockwell or don't spend your money there and let them know why. Stores and restaurants never give me a problem, they want my business, however the local library had one idiot and public transit can be a problem. In the US we have a thing called the Americans with disabilities act. I fold mine with the handlebars extended and say it's my walker, when challenged. Then if they STILL want to argue, I say, wait I need to start my camera so you can say that to the camera. Stops em every time. BTW I'm old and have some noticeable physical issues.

Another really useful and informative film - I have to admit, I have used one of mine a couple of times but like you, my usual port of call is to fold and pop into a trolly! Adding the wheel extension bar was a massive help to stability, and I put a pair of in-line skate wheels on that (80mm I think) which also assists mobility but I have to keep an eye not to catch my heels on when pedalling. I love that the Brompton comes in with me, but am not bothered that it’s easier by trolly - as you say, it’s a bike not a shopping cart 😂 Stay safe 🤗
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 3 года назад
Thanks Amanda! Yeah like you, it’s just too much hassle without the rack. Like you said. I either wheel it behind me or put it in a trolley. The eazy wheels are doing what I wanted in terms of making it easy to roll without the bag on. I just put the bag over my shoulder when I go to work. Thanks for the sponsor by the way! 😀 appreciate it! Stay safe! 👍

I have the M3R version, with roller wheels as esaywheels. When the Brompton is folded, I attach the wheel to the frame with a piece of velcro. So I can extend the seat post and use the saddle as a handle. It is much easier to use like that and it is more stable. I think you should also use a suitable bag, the C BAG for example, is not practical for shopping ...
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 3 года назад
Yeah the rack makes it much more stable. This was looking at what it is like without the rack. I have got a Velcro strap that I use for when I move it around using the saddle as well. The bag I have is the T-bag 👍 I don’t plan on using it as a trolley though in the future. Think it is more hassle than it looks. Glad to hear you are getting some good results though 👍
@ab935
@ab935 2 года назад
I got an aftermarket block, attached it to a milk crate with some plates and use that as my basket. I keep the handlebar extended and hold on to it. Will add the rack in the future, but for now it works fine. The 10kg weight limit gets reached quickly with beverages. 1 gallon~=8lbs. I don't think it would be very good on carpeting using the stock rollers.
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 2 года назад
Think the rack will make a big difference to that set up you have mentioned. For me it isn’t easy to push around as a trolley so just put it in a trolley instead. Yeah the 10kg limit does get reached easily if buying drinks and so on. We end up getting stuff as we go along to save on the weight. Hope the rack installation goes well! 😀👍
@Luuk_M
@Luuk_M Год назад
Why not install a rack? *This improves the stability even more than an extender, both parked or rolling. *It rolls way better than with that pathetic “wheel” mounted on the back fender. *The rack enables you to take larger items with you, like toilet paper. *You can transport a kid standing on it (for short distances). *It serves as a bike stand for easy removing of the back wheel in case of a puncture (from the parked position, rotate the front half backwards till this rests on the seat). *It makes the rear light much better visible. *It protects the rear fender, and eliminates the load of the third “wheel” on this rear fender. *It enables the use of for example a rack bag, to create enough storage space for camping gear together with a T-bag. *With a rack maneuvering the bike as a shopping cart can be done by the steering wheel instead of the handle bar of the bag, giving more control over the bike. These 9 advantages easily outweigh the additional weight and cost for me. Installing it afterwards will cost approximately €125 on parts. It is not very difficult and the cable of the rear light is long enough. Do use Loctite where no self locking nuts are used.
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday Год назад
Hi Luuk, I am not a fan of the rack because I don't personally like the way it looks on the bike. It is much more stable when folded with the rack. However I think it is also a bit of an issue if putting lots of items on the rack as you have to then take it all off to fold it. The bike is still stable without the rack as a stand. Think it's just personal preference. To be fair, I have stopped rolling the Brompton around as I think from personal experience it does more harm than good on the stem over time, especially if leaving the bag on the front block. So I carry it around now more than anything else. I don't have the Brompton lights due to the fact they are obscured and not easy to access when out on the bike, so have my own attached to the seat post which is much more visible.
@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188
@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 2 года назад
The original small wheels are in my opinion rather useless, so I changed them to a larger version at once, and also a telescope easy-wheelset, with a carbon tube in the middle for less weight, and raised to be more usefull when folded.
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 2 года назад
Yes the original wheels only function really is to protect the bike when folded. Not very useful for rolling around folded. The new Brompton they have launched has the improved larger wheels so maybe this might be something they start adding as standard to all Bromptons going forward hopefully.
@misstubbie1313

My Brompton doesn’t have a rack either and I use it as a shopping cart with the handlebar up. It is unstable indeed as you very accurately pointed. But since I’ve just use it this way every now and then it doesn’t represent a problem. If the load becomes very heavy , I do need to take the bag (I have the S-bag) off the carrier block before unfolding completely. One thing that I’ve noticed which I don’t like is that the rear wheel often touches the floor; this makes the wheel roll, and the little chain coming from the SturmyArcher hub hits the sprockets helping it from rolling freely. It feels like I’m forcing it 🥵
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday Год назад
Yeah the rear wheel is a bit of a problem sometimes. That’s why the rack version is better in that situation. 😀👍

It's possible that pulling it by the handle of the bag, especially while loaded, could put quite a strain on the block and the latching system.
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 3 года назад
Good point. But to be honest I am more worried about pulling it by the handle bars when fully loaded. Based on what I found over the past two weeks was putting a lot of pressure on the joint where the handle bars fold. Another reason I found it awkward while trying it out and not really a fan of using it as a trolley personally 👍 Plus the extra strain on the handle with the weight of the bike too. My experience was I didn’t like it overall 👍
@optomediainc
@optomediainc 3 года назад
👍 The handle bar hinge has probably been engineered for more abuse though. Yes, agreed. While still useful in some situations, the shopping cart mode, along with other Brompton perks touted as advantages often sound neat, look good on paper, or look easy on RU-vid until you actually try them in practice.

Definatley. Happy to use it as a bike, roll it around to make it easier when I don’t want to carry it, but won’t be using it as a trolley.
@optomediainc
@optomediainc 3 года назад
@@CycleEveryday Another example of how trolley mode is something that looks better on paper than what it actually translates into is that not all grocery stores are cool with you dropping their products into a concealed bag before you've paid for them. Many grocery stores obligate you to use one of their "official" baskets while shopping. So now you're awkwardly dealing with the bike in tow *and* trying to balance the basket. In that particular case scenario, locking up a simple old beater bike outside would have been a far more hassle-free solution than towing around the Brompton.
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 3 года назад
That was my concern to start with. So I only did this on those scan as you go shops. Wouldn’t even bother in the UK at shops where you don’t scan as you go. Probably get arrested! 😂 That’s why I personally never really thought about using it as a trolley. Normally put it in the trolley or just pull it behind and can have the basket in my other hand. That works very well. I have my bag on my shoulder. I see what you mean about a beater bike, but personally brought the Brompton so I wouldn’t have to do that. The best thing about it is you can take it places with you and that’s one of the main reasons I got it 👍

Brompton rack and mudguard. 2 Rotacastors from Australia replace frame wheels on an extender bracket. 2 Rapid Omniwheels drilled out to take a pair of bearings each for the rearmost wheels on rack. Valerias shopping front bag from Spain (electric specific, need an Electric large frame) When shopping I hang on left from saddle using handle of a Vincita rack bag with Rixen and Kaul UniKlip fitting. That gives all counterbalance needed. Time from riding to shopping? About 2 minutes max.
