Fooled by the FOMO is a fantastic expression. It's the best title and saying you've ever come up with! I've never heard a better title! As titles go, 11/10! I'd love to sign the feature film rights to this title RIGHT NOW!
Rawr and Write is fantastic, you should really play it. I think the app is just a companion app to replace the player sheets, unless there's another one out there.
@@RoomandBoardReviews Room and board! Why are you here? Aren’t you supposed to be trolling full time in your own comments section?! (Speaking of which when does your next showdown come out? Lol) keep up the good work!
Cloudspire is a huge favorite of mine. I do strongly recommend two handed solo before diving into the solo scenarios. Brawnen are the most straight forward faction. You love tmb so the reference cards won’t put you off. The factions are super different from one another. Huge plus! I’m waiting on tmb now and I got hoplo and burncycle showing up with it. Cloudspire sold me on ctg.
Really appreciated this video! Personally trying to wind down on just how many games I back on kickstarter and gamefound. Currently, I have 16 outstanding projects. I just need to make time for the games that have yet arrived and time for to arrive at this point.
I like Petrichor a lot - have had the base game for years and happy enough with its components that I didn't buy the KS upgrades but I do have all the expansions (flowers is the easiest to include. I like the others too but wouldn't always play with everything). I don't know if you'll like it or not though, our tastes are the same about 50% of the time. But it does something that feels kind of unique in terms of theme and the way the weathers work.
Twitch stream Tainted Grail with Jesse. 😉 His Tainted Grail gameplay video of chapter 1 from years ago was what got me to notice his channel back in the beginning. It was great, and then there was no continuation, sadly.
Tainted Grail is my favorite AR game, did a campaign with a friend's copy then late pledged all in, love the combat/diplomacy system. Looking forward to ISS Vanguard from how you talk about it. I own all of Cloud Spire but have only played it once it's a heavy learn, a heavy teach and a box. I currently want to play again and see if I need it and TMB in the collection they do different things but the weight and play lengths are similar.
I've gone all in on ISS Vanguard and everything I've seen since then makes me confident it's going to be excellent. I am worried about my Freedom Five pledge, I won't be surprised if it ends up being a decent game but nothing worthy of an all-in painted pledge.
Same thing here. I really love Tainted Grail, and its my favorite narrative game until know (maybe ISS Vanguard will change that^^) Cloudspire really is a super nice game, but you do have to sink your teeth in it. If one player knows the game better he will know how to exploit the weaknesses of your units, because with certain enemies you need to know what to do. (For example the heirs could win the game easily with a royal talon Round 1, if the enemy doesnt counter it. If you know it, its easy to counter, but a new player will be demolished. But nonetheless Cloudspire is also worth it just as a solo game. The Scenarios are really challenging. You often need to play them often, to find the right strategy.
Project Elite is a great game. Only played it few times, but every time everyone has loved it, especially the real time aspect. I got mine second hand, luckily I got pretty much the whole KS set.
Hey Alex, Respectfully, I don't get it for Cloudspire. You already know so much, how come are you not able to play it? Take the solo Campaign 1, set up and play! that's it! You are a big fan of CTG, I cannot believe you have not try it yet. That you did not like a game, I respect this but you HAVE to play at least couple of the campaign scenarios!
I have been caught up in the FOMO, if you don't then you are not breathing. Thankfully the games that I did get because of FOMO I did play and find out they are not for me and I have sold them. Those that were for me I am glad I got them and I did not miss out. So is that still a FOMO issue? The only game I have yet to table is The Great Wall, and that's because it has not been "gifted" to me yet. It is still sitting under the bed as a future present from my wife to me. :)
Tainted grail was so good for me. I played the first campaign with my wife - 2 player is the way to go IMO as you want to share that great story with someone.
The Dice Tower is not really very good at reviewing more complicated games. Zee Garcia's review of Reichbusters as an example. ... Cloudspire is a FANTASTIC game! ... That I spent three days getting to know, and two weeks of daily play throughs to internalize the game and turn sequence. Event. Income. Market. Build. Prep. (Onslaught) Start. Camp. Build. Move. Fire. Explore. Attack. End. Floating Islands and Castles in the sky. Fought over by giant eagles waving two swords, warrior bugs, armored giants, monkey pirates, magic-blasting priests, angry wooden grizzly bears, and cutthroat teddy bears. Yeah, really. Awesome game.
I'm with you on Tainted Grail, I regret not going for Sundrop, I made the same mistake on Etherfields also. I didn't make the 1wave mistake but despite that it got shelved and is yet to hit the table. I do know a fair portion of that is trouble with tabling it - no game table we can close up combined with cats means we can't leave it setup to play *yet*. But the reviews have reassured me and delay may give me time to paint/shade the minis?
I think my favorite games in the stack are Altar Quest and Tainted Grail. Really enjoyed Altar Quest but it was a friends copy and we had to stop halfway through the campaign. Tainted Grails is amazing but a bit difficult. Have not made it to the end yet but getting ready to leave it set up on the table for the summer.
To me the verb "to table" usually means to set aside. As in "The senate has tabled this motion." I suppose it could mean to physically place an object on a table, but that would (to me) be a less common usage. YMMV
I debated over backing Cloudspire for a long time. Eventually, I convinced myself that it is not going to get tabled, and it is probably easier for me to just play similar games on PC. Save some money and shelf space!
War of Whispers is one of my longest unplayed KS. I tried to teach my parents but my dad absolutely could not get the concept that you don't control a single faction but manipulate all of them. Which is weird to me because we play and love the King Is Dead which is basically the same concept albeit distilled down...
Haven't tabled In Too Deep just yet. Did table Dinosaur World once so far, and got the folded space insert for it since. I enjoyed it, but what surprised me most is the person I was expecting to like it the least ended up liking it the most. I'd totally teach you to play it, it's actually pretty easy to learn.
Hey Alex, great vid! I think "Filled by the FOMO" is a succinct title and accurate reflection of exactly what you're talking about here. I've done it for games that aren't KS too...a game comes up "on offer" 50%+ off retail, I snap it up only to have it sit and stare at me, unplayed and unloved 😜
You know, you almost had me fooled. Based on your unboxing video for altar quest, I researched the game and almost jumped on a Kickstarter pledge that was selling near me. Then I backed out of my impulse. To see now that you didn’t even get it to the table yourself?! These Kickstarters can be addictive and to see that many of them go utterly unplayed. I’ve sold every big Kickstarter I didn’t like or didn’t get to the table. Now I only have a few big hits left (e.g. Nemesis and Marvel United). Now my personal bigger problem is saying NO to over Deluxe Euro’s. To get Castles of Burgundy or not? Oh the agony.
Hey Alex, would you ever do a video on your entire collection? What games you have on the shelf and what you like/dislike about them? Not sure if you've done a video like that recently
I was a bit worried about Titans, especially since I already have a ton of area control games. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Only played it twice (I also have too many games to play), but I can recommend it. It had a wargamey vibe, due to the orders mechanic.
Not getting FOMO with Massive Darkness 2, bought the Conversion Kit for MD 1 and will pick up retail stuff and maybe some extra Monsters. I want to be able to travel with it.
There’s a guy who brought War of Whispers to game night. We played 4 players. It was fun! I’d play again. Lots of push and pull between controlling area (which has benefits), building up power (in order to keep control of area) and moving up in turn order (which has advantages). From what I’ve seen over the past two years, you will definitely like and enjoy it. Love it? I think probably not. But enough to keep given what it offers in the time it takes to play and that it plays up to 5 (if I recall correctly)? I suspect it will stay on your shelf for a year or two.
You got to find a way to get games you haven't played to the table, by controlling yourself and your game group. Otherwise your only going to play your old games. So as an example when you have three to four people suggest project elite, instead of what you would normally want to play. I had the same problem with my game group at one point, were they only wanted to play Scythe, I couldn't get any other game to the table, and my game group would complain if I tried. Eventually I put in a system were their happy to try and play New games, over the older ones.
Altarquest is pretty good, it's an improved Heroquest. sadly if it's not organised well it's more cumbersome to setup. Once set up though it's quite the experience. There's one more bad thing. The game can be either very short or very long depending on how balanced the setup of heroes + enemies is, but out of 8 games 6 times were a blast.
Ahh the dark past of fooled by the fomo. Still crying how I gave up my Conan pledge for an expansion because they had miniatures from my nationality, despite them visually being strikingly similar to the core game miniatures.
Those are all a lot newer than the oldest KS games still on my unplayed shelves. I have 4 games, I think, that have been on my unplayed shelves for more than 4 years, but admittedly, I've cooled so much on them that I don't know when they'll get played. But we're trying to make a bigger effort this year to play our unplayed games, so hopefully we'll get a few of them played. I think we have about 12 KS games total to play, out of 60 total unplayed games. So in general, we do play the KS games we get.
I agree with you about sundrop for Tainted Grail, brings out the details on the figures. Quite happy not to have to paint them. Even more so for Nemesis where the aliens were done in different colours for each species. I've seen painted versions that are no better than the sundropped ones.
I see all those Project Elite boxes behind your left arm! :) As for Altar Quest, I loved Street Masters, but Altar Quest, I got half way through my first game and couldn't finish. Haven't played it since.
Cloudspire is one of the best games I have played. I like it better than TMB (own both). Indeed the learning curve is steep but the sense of achievement after beating a scenario with 3 renown is wayyyy more satisfying than cheesing a Tyrant (for me). That said TMB is also awesome :)
Hey Alex, to play Altar quest, you could start reading the campaign booklet. It drives you in the story in a Book where you're the hero style. Just a little push to get started. And i think there is a new rulebook in a more tutorial way on theire website or BGG (made by a fan). By the way the campaign is only 6 missions, you could finish a campaign game and have what you need to make a review in a reasonable amount of time. Just don't play with to much characters to keep it simple.
Alex, if you want to find a new home for all your Project Elite KS content, my game group plays 5-6 player games of Project Elite a minimum of 1-2 times a month at my place. One of our favorite games of all time, and I really wish I had all the content, I would love to get the extra content at some point and we would play it quite a bit. I have introduced Project Elite to many groups, and it has never let me down. My favorite is 6 player games for sure, I played with my extended family and they absolutely LOVED IT. The Terran box, extra alien spawn type, and Rook expansion would increase our variability greatly. Thanks again for the great content and discussions. I totally agree with you on ShutUpAndSitDown, I watch all their hilarious content, but often their gaming tastes are totally different than my own. Have a good one.
We share A War of Whispers and Tainted Grail in this list. I also have Etherfields coming soon that I made the mistake of choosing one wave shipping on
Petrichor is in my top five games. As a massive fan of area majority and hand management, it was something I fell in love with quickly. An easy teach (five minutes tops) with the base game and I've never had a BASE only game exceed 45 minutes regardless of player count or experience. The expansions just add to the complexity and brain burn of it and make it a far crunchier affair. So you can really tailor the game experience to group, time limits, and mechanical interactions how you desire. I would be shocked if you didn't at least find a good portion of what is on display enjoyable based on what I've learned from your tastes in other videos. It may not be your favourite, but I'd be astounded if it was less than a 3.5 for you.
A War of Whispers is a great game! It’s one of those games that can leave you with great memories - my husband betrayed me in the last game we played snatching away my victory and we still laugh about it with our friends now 😂
Alex, I hear ya! I have so, so many games on my shelf of shame. With that said, Project Elite isn't on that shelf, but I find myself in the same boat as you. I love the game and want to play it often but I just don't have a friend group that is as excited about it as I am. I have one other friend and thus we end up making it a two player game. Which is still a lot of fun! I would rather play it at two than not play it at all. Also, Tainted Grail is amazing! You absolutely have to table it soon. It is such an immersive game. Awaken Realms really made something special when they made that game.
I have had a few of these. Gloomhaven being the most prominent, That being said, Project Elite is my most played game. Had FOMO and it ended well. It is probably the groups I play with, but every game I have played has been amazing, and we keep coming back for more.
I think you will like war of whispers. The rules are not overly complex and I thought after playing veiled fate I would only be keeping one or the other but they are different enough. Its cool to think you are controlling entire armies instead of just an imdividual piece. Check out bgg for the alternate setup method to make the game more balanced.
Dinosaur World is very good. It’s a table hog but it’s good. I enjoy those fancy components. The meeples are some of the best I’ve seen. Pandasaurus does such a good job. Rawr and Write is one of the best roll and writes available today. Such a good puzzle. The app is very good too if you don’t want to write everything out yourself and if you need help keeping track of everything. Get both of those to the table if you can. I predict that Rawr and Write will be a new fave.
Tainted Grail really is a great experience although it can feel a bit grindy at times. My wife and I just finished Act 2 Friday night as a matter of fact. Looking forward to finishing it up soon. Altar quest is the one that's been on my chopping block for awhile. I've only played it once and it felt kind of bleh. I also have Street Masters which I absolutely love. So the MDS system wasn't the issue. I'm not sure what it is. I just didn't care for it on that playthrough. I know I should probably try it again before I sell it, but I'm awfully close to just listing it and being done.
We really like Titans. There’s something about it that makes the conflict a great laugh. Has gone over very well with some non-gamers friends. Hope you get to give it a go 😊
Ignite is really fun. At 3 ,4, and 6. And the creators seem very nice people. The worked a lot to deliver it into our hands. Their first project, excellent quality, original and very replayable. They deserve your honest review!
Was the last time you played Project Elite the time you played with Jesse? What a guy, he killed your enthusiasm. (kidding of course). I found Dinosaur World a little long for what it did for me. Its on the chopping block. Petrichor I still havnt played Alter Quest is now sold. I found it too slow with far to many abilities to track. Tainted Grail - sooooooo much game. Very enjoyable. Ill finish it in a few years I swear.
This may be a long shot, but, if you're willing to parts ways with Petrichor, I'd love to take it off your hands. I'm international though, so not sure how that would work
You had me very nervous about Petrichor being on this list. I also haven't gotten to playing mine yet but that's more because of my post pandemic gaming group primarily meeting up only for a campaign game of Etherfields. Although we are starting to mix it up a bit thank goodness. I'm very much enjoying Etherields, but Tainted Grail was not a hit with my group. I feel bad for my friend who bought it and barely gets to play it. Hopefully you enjoy Tainted Grail. If you decide not to trade up my friend who owns these games has had great luck using airbrushes and zenithal prime contrast paints.
Ignite had me hyped till I saw Toms review.. I know he said negative reviews are good for the hobby (and you agreed) but I think because he is never negative on “real” hobby games it carried more weight then his reviews usually do for me. I think true honest reviews (including negative) are good for the hobby but when you only publish 1 or 2 negative reviews on hobby games it kinda feels like targeted thrashings. I like your system of always being clear on what you liked/didn’t like/could see others etc where I often don’t care about your final score cause those categories tell me accurately (so far) if I’m gonna like the game.
I feel like I’ve gotten better at foiling the fomo. (I liked the alliteration and decided to expand on it!) Of course I’m probably going to be inundated by a large wave of massive games in the next few months…
I want to see an Ignite video where you invite Tom and you challenge him on the review he puts out or schedule a 2vs2 playthrough you and Jesse vs Tom and Roy. Something like that. That would be epic. Please pretty please 😁
I have enjoyed Cloudspire and Tainted Grail a ton and have put in a whole lot of hours on both of those. I'd love to play Project: Elite, but doubt it will end up in my collection. I also really want to try A War of Whispers. I'm with you on Petrichor...
Titans is cool, you should give it a shot. Dinosaur World is one I played and need to try again before I completely forget how to play. If anyone in your group has analysis paralysis it can be very frustrating in Dinosaur World.
You have to have enough time to commit to Cloudspire to learn it and there isn't really a shortcut for most people. I do agree it's a fantastic game and it's not as really as complex as the manual makes it. The new manual has a fantastic step by step Solo Tutorial but it way stops too soon IMO. The Solo Scenarios suffer from too little ramp up in difficulty initially and the game could do with some introductory trainer missions before the main campaign as I think it's very off putting. A good litmus test if your winning with 3 Renown easily when you begin you're probably doing something wrong :P Still the game is well worth the effort to learn.
@@johnathanrhoades7751 My experience with 1.2 is buying and placing an Earthscape between Tile 14 and Tile 11 helps in Wave 2-3 as it reduces the range to the 2 Retalls (A & C) for Raze from the well on Tile 14. Also dependent on the Earthscape tile you buy you'll normally get another Well to get a 2nd Siege Tower even closer. (Remember Spires can NOT fire directly over empty hexes you have to be able to count an unbroken line of actual neoprene hexes from spire to target.. so an easy thing to misunderstand as it's not totally logical you can't fire over gaps even though the range looks ok) Another mistake to make is not realise the Shrubbery Spires (B) have Camouflage so you can't use Raze unless your Spire is directly adjacent... same for Ranged units. 3R in 1.1 means 3X Research Items to collect in 1.2 and return to your gate so buying a "fast" Hero from the market early (Wave 2) is the only solution I came up with to give me the chance to get all 3... so some good Market RNG needed for me personally.
Just watched Tom's review of ignite.....his hate for the game gave me a good laugh, looking forward to your own review when it comes to see how they differ...hehe
FOMO and Forgotten would work as well for the title. But yeah, I know how this goes. I have MIddara on the shelf, I shall play it eventually, but I just added Act 2 & 3 with the new Pledge Manager.
Tainted Grail is one of my oldest unplayed games. Not because I have cooled on it but instead because its a campaign game. I prefer to wait until I have those painted first. I have it primed to zenithal and ready to paint. After I finish zpocalypse 2 painting and Dark Darker Darkest I will move onto Tainted Grail. Both DDD and TG I am painting with TM metallics and inks so I expect them to be quick paint jobs. I am interested to see what you think. If you get it played before I do. I am hoping to table it before the new campaign.
I may have missed it, but are you saying that you haven't tabled Townsfolk Tussle, but that only playing one bossfight is a fun way to do it? Either way, I'm gonna disagree there! You really miss out on the town event proper if only doing one boss, with no follow-up after beating the boss and getting your gold it feels really disjointed. In my experience the only shortcut that still keeps the full feel of the game intact is the CE short variant, whereby you get an extra 6 gold at the beginning and play 3 bosses, with the 3rd being the final showdown - opposed to the original 4. Oh and again, if you haven't gotten it to the table yet, definitely do so with 2 or 3 other people (if possible), it's a really good time!
I played it a lot and mostly at 2 players. There is better duel games out there. I consider Cloudspire a game I would ONLY play at 4 players with people that knows what they are doing.
Here's a few suggestions for possible titles... 1) FOMO Failures - You had to have it but now that it's here you don't play. (sounds like a type of dysfunction...) 2) Fantasy FOMO or Fleeting FOMO - Turns out the FOMO you felt is gone and it was just a fantasy or illusion. 3) Fickle FOMO - Thought you had to have it but now you're not sure why. (Do I even know what I want...?) 4) FOMO-Fueled Folly - Oops, maybe I don't really need that right now. "Feel Free" to use one of these! 😂
Additional suggestion... If you use "Fleeting FOMO" you could sing that great Righteous Brothers song You've Lost That FOMO Feelin' as the intro. That's RU-vid gold right there!
