Foot Rot in Phyllobates terribilis: Treatment and Recovery

Back in May 2020, I noticed one of my Phyllobates terribilis frogs had injured her foot. After scouring hobbyist and veterinary literature and consulting with a zoo veterinarian, I made a couple of husbandry changes and applied silver sulfadiazine cream to the injury once daily for ten days. The wound healed quickly, but it would take months for my frog to regrow her toes.
This video contains my suggestions for prevention and treatment of pododermatitis (foot rot) in Phyllobates dart frogs, based on this experience. The basic takeaways: 1) hobbyists report adding extra leaf litter and a rock perch (as rocks do not become waterlogged) can prevent pododermatitis. 2) If your pet develops pododermatitis, talk to your veterinarian about what diagnostics/therapy is right for your circumstances - I had success with SSD every 24 hours and noticed improvement fairly quickly; some cases may require culture or biopsy.
Apologies for the crappy audio - I was attempting to be considerate of my housemates by remaining masked as I am currently home on a mandatory ten day quarantine after a confirmed COVID exposure, and I didn't realize it would cause so much clipping.

Glad to hear the frog is doing better. Sorry to hear that you’ve been exposed. Getting Covid sucks but I hope you don’t get it. Another great video as always

Thanks! So far so good on the COVID front, I'm actually scheduled to be vaccinated next week assuming I'm still healthy, so the end is in sight

Hi Connor, thanks for the great video. We are having the same problem with our kids right now and there is indeed very little information/discussion about pododermatitis in Terribilis out there. I have an appointment with a vet to hopefully get a prescription for the SSD (important to note that it is not available OTC). Appreciate your help and hoping we can have a happy ending for our frogs as well. 💛

Hey! One question for you though… how did you administer the SSD? Just with a quetip? How did you keep it from falling off of her slippery skin?

Glad to hear it. If your vet doesn’t have a ton of experience treating frogs (as most do not), you can usually request they consult a zoo specialist through idexx or antech (these are the big vet labs that most practices use for their lab work, I have spoken with the specialists at idexx and found it helpful). Generally the specialist will help interpret any tests and/or help recommend tests prior to running them. A culture would probably be the most valuable, though it is context dependent. To apply the SSD I used a qtip and applied it daily. The issue is that they do rub it off. You might want to consider doing something like a soak in a different antibiotic (I have a link in one of those citations to a VIN case about lesions of Phyllobates and a soak that the vets used - you need an account but your vet will probably have one). Baytril otic (intended for dog ears) can also be used instead of the cream, it has SSD and a stronger antibiotic. Same issue though, they can rub it off. I’d discuss the best strategy with the vet -depending on where the lesion is they can help you tailor the plan.

Thank you for the fantastic video! The information is great to have out there in such a digestible format, particularly when accurate information on such injuries are hard to come by. Thanks for your commitment!

Hey! Great vid! Quick question does coco husk mold? I want to use it on my backdrop in my vivarium after the applying the pond foam, silicone, and cork. Then layering it over the silicone to add a “natural” look. Will it mold?
@ConnorLongDVM
@ConnorLongDVM 3 года назад
That’s the technique I used - everything can mold and mold is part of the natural “cycling” process of bioactive vivariums. If you introduce springtails they will eat the fungus and after an initial bloom it should be controlled by the springtails. Fungus is actually an important component of healthy vivariums - it breaks down leaf litter and compostables,, and then is eaten by springtails. The springtails don't break down compostables directly.

COVID has spiked the demand for veterinary visits into a truly unmanageable level and I have been extraordinarily busy. I'm switching jobs in August and will have much better hours at the new clinic, and intend to resume making videos at that time
