Nice post. Lack of upper/lower body separation is what stops most novice & intermediate skiers from ever becoming advanced. If I may add something else to your post, I think the upper body needs to be actively twisted, rather than just leaving it there and letting the legs do the twisting. This is from observation of many students over the 28 years I've been teaching - when I first intro this idea to them and they try it, you'd think that their legs and torso were fused because the torso still just follows the skis for the first few tries. So I vacillate from a focus on the feet & legs twisting, to twisting the upper body actively - so they know there's functional muscle use involved in both domains of the body.
@CECS1
@CECS1 7 лет назад
emjaynie2 I disagree. separation results from a majority of femoral rotation. no longer is a counter rotation necessary to leverage a shaped alice, but rather progressive tipping and twisting of the lower body.

@skng
@skng Год назад
@@ken-km7kk Oh wow, sounds like you have an epic season lined up. I think we might have to get back out to BC and join you for some turns. Skiing powder is essentially the same as skiing piste except that you have the additional force of the powder snow to work against. So if your technique is off then it will show it up. Try and get your body position strong and turn shape/control perfected on piste and then take it to the powder. Once in the powder, be confident and maintain momentum. A strong progressive pole plant can help here. Most of all keep at it and enjoy every moment. I'll try and post some more powder tips this winter. Is there anything specific you would like help with? Deeper powder? Keeping momentum? Turning in powder? Cheers Noddy

Awesome technique for skiing in narrow and steep tracks (i.e. less than 3m), which I need to learn and practicing. I have an horrible experience for skiing in a red track (i.e. about 1.0 km long track, steep slope, narrow with less than 3.0m wide and edge of the mountain) I start panic when seeing the edge of the mountain, no catch fence!!! Even the instructor in front of me. The basic wedging technique not working well too because the slope is too steep, and mental afraid being fall to the edge of the maintain.
@andygarza6968

I thought what was missing is that at this level of skier, the up movement is not so much a release of pressure as it is a release of the old turn and edges. By releasing the edges with this up movement we actually flatten the skis with regard to ski snow contact. This is what facilitates leg steering, A flatter ski on the snow.
@GeroLubovnik
@GeroLubovnik 10 лет назад
You are partially right Andy. Releasing the ski edges will allow the skis to turn, to some extent, by themselves. The skis WILL seek the fall line without much assistance. However, what allows the skis to turn OUT of the fall line is torque. Turning the INSIDE ski in the direction of the turn creates force that travels up the leg, across the pelvis and gives the outside ski the power to turn as well. Again, the key is CONTINOUS *ACTIVE* **INSIDE** SKI.

"Hockey" stops are taught Wrong by everyone because you are told to do what it Looks Like instead of what you need to do to Make it Look Like that. Making a quick turn to stop involves doing what your skis require of you to allow THEM to make a quick turn. All the world's instructors do is "Show" you how to Force them to change direction not Allow Them to make a tight turn across the hill. Can you imagine making the back of your car slide around to make a really tight turn? If you want to make a very quick and tight turn in your car, you have to slow down by applying the brakes which adds weight to your front tires and rotate the steering wheel which will make your tires turn to the side in the direction you want to go. The tips of the skis are the front steering tires of your car. THEY, make the ski change direction. The more weight you put on the tip and the more you put them on edge, the faster they will change direction while the un weighted tails slide around. When you want to make that kind of turn to the left, you do the following. 1. From a standing up or high position, you get off your left foot as you are making a turn to the left. 2. Drive your knees Hard into the tongue of your boot which will pull weight off the tails of your skis and drive that weight down on the tips, the front tires. 3. Now you push your hip and your upper body to the left to lay your legs over so the skis are more on edge. 4. The tips of your skis will bend into an arc and turn while your tails slide around.

Very nice. I wish some more countrys had this technique. Although not 100% sure. depends on weightdistribution on the skis. I do have. you have a very upright basic position througout. So much it looks like your almost more on your heels then on your entire foot. Now this last part may because of the camera angle. But this upright position is it purely for demonstrating or also for the usual skiing? I really like the videos very good explenations. (still missing the helmet though)

What am I doing wrong with my turns and hockey stops? When I do a hard turn, something I have learned from you, I often get turned 180 degrees around and end up skiing backwards until I can regain control. The same is true for my hockey stop, though I am seldom able to execute the stop to that extent. I'm still nervous with the hockey stop, but am excited about its potential and I won't give up. But, all-in-all, why do my turns and some of my stops turn me so far around (more like 180 degrees rather than 90 degrees - LOL). Thanks, Mike

@johnmacward
@johnmacward 7 лет назад
Moelijk Yeah, the ski plough (pizza) is not useful on anything steep, it barely works effectively on some gentle blues, it's really for generally very slow beginner skiing where your speed is already quite slow. You really need to learn parallel braking, which is not really that hard - it's your next step really. Don't get put off by a bad instructor. Skiing is excellent fun and it's worth the falls and occasional pain - your instructor should not have taken you off piste as a beginner. I'm skiing 6 years and I find off piste a nightmare so maybe next time you go you find a smaller group where the instructor scan pay more attention to your level.

@jonnyhifi
@jonnyhifi 9 лет назад
All skiiers experience fear at various times : it is natural. It will only be dispelled as your skill and familiarity increase for the situations that scare you. Skill cannot be acquired whilst scared (if you are with people who simply say "go for it" they are naïve, and it won't help.). You need to ski in terrain/ conditions you feel comfortable in : which generally means flatter more open terrain. the worse the conditions : the flatter it will need to be. Many skiiers don't understand the fear reaction is personal : so if you are terrified in a situation other peple are comfortable in, it doesn't mean your sense of fear isn't real. It is. And will not be dispelled by them telling you "you shouldn't be". It is better to ski and learn on gentler slopes, making the difficulty through the technical activity (which can be made easier/ harder little by little and arbitrarily) than being driven by the slope. If you ignore this you will adopt a lot of really bad defensive postures/ habits, that will almost certainly be very difficult to eradicate later. Look at 99% of skiers on the slopes. One reason most are such poor skiiers, is because they went on too difficult terrain too early: and won't for example, ride the skis in long arcs to control speed: instead they get frightened as the skis intitially speed up (as they are pointing more and more downhill during the early part of the turn), and resort to all sorts of nasty "not real skiing" activities like stem turning, to "get them round quickly" and horrible non useful jaggy turns that so many poor skiiers do, as it's become such an ingrained habit. I forget the exact quote, but the great Alberto Tomba said he couldn't learn anything on a run steeper than a red (or maybe blue?) which tells you something... !

+jonnyhifi I know it is 9 months later. But that was a very well written response. I too have the fear kick in and your explanation help put things in the proper perspective.

Subzero UK it's been a while since your question, so I hope our replies came in handy during the season between then and now. :)

when I try this, my skis fall off, and I lose balance and eventually fall. How can I stop this?
@soundcloudthrowbacks

Whenever I do this I can’t get my less dominant foot to go parallel, it just kind of forms the pizza shape sideways, one ski is turned to make the stop but the other is forward still.

Nevermind, just went yesterday and took the day to practice.. got it down at high speeds and slow speeds all because of this great video that explains stuff better than my friends could.

Going to blue mountain tomorrow morning. Skiing for my first time but i'm an amazing hockey player. Will my experience with skating help out?

+Ri3llyTheCod3r I suppose at least it would help you with this "hockey stop" LOL

Hey +Ri3llyTheCod3r. How did you get on? I'm sure your hockey skills would've help with your balance and body position over the skis although the blades (skis) are slightly longer and probably need a little more patience when learning how to turn. Hope you had fun.

you are good, but the whole "stand up" thing made no sense to me though. Ill try to see if i can mimic the motion you were doing next time I ski.

Nice video, but how is this an itermediate skiers tip? I´ve learned this at my second season of skiing when I got into carving... I this is a very basic thing, so please adjust the title of the video, this is very misleading for me

I swear i put all my weight on one ski to turn but I cant get the other leg to do the same so that they r parallel..either my legs are weak asf or im doing sometning wrong
@MastiKaHathi

nick Persaud Well, if you can stand on one leg, you can absolutely do it while skiing. First try to learn how to balance it.

+Timurv1234 you turn your skis too much up the hill

+Timurv1234 It is because you are not leaning forwards enough.

Timurv1234 Most likely allowing upper body to follow ski tips. As DarrenTurner says keep the zipper facing down hill. I like to tell students to take a picture down the hill while holding a super wide camera.

He missed the mark entirely on this one. He did not mention the two most important things to allow you to successfully turn your feet. 1) Position of your body at the end of the turn. This lateral body position (where your body is between the skis, particularly at the completion of a turn is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT. Your body MUST be DOWNHILL of "lateral center". This unlocks the feet. Warning: The following description is a little crude but is the easiest way to describe it. Stop reading here if you're sensitive. If you want to envision proper lateral body position at the end of a turn, imagine that if you peed it would run down the inside of your lower (outside) leg. In other words, the center of your crotch will be aligned with the inside of the LOWER leg as the turn (or activity) completes. [I'll call this the center from here out] This will unlock your feet and allow you to be quick and agile. If your center is even 1 inch too uphill your feet will not release (and engage) edges properly without extraneous upper body movement. Your turns will be late and in difficult situations you will be making linked recoveries. Second, it is the INSIDE ski being CONTINUOUSLY guided that provides the torque (power) for the outside ski to turn. Lastly, be very aware of your turn shape. The turn shape aids the mechanics just as much (or even more at times) than the mechanics create the turn shape. Dismounting soap box.
