The coyote was injured by the pony and officials were able to capture and euthanize it. It tested positive for rabies. The horses had up to date vaccines, including for rabies, and are in a 45 day quarantine with the vet, but they seem to be doing fine for now.
I take my dog every day for our 4 mile walk thru the park by my home n we come across coyotes quite often! Sometimes they follow us for a bit but 4 the most part don't get 2 close! Though Josey Wales my Rhodesian Ridgeback may be the reason! Lol!
That isn't a rabid coyote, it's a hungry coyote... and a rabid coyote wouldn't have stopped when it was kicked... their brains are so messed up that they become extremely aggressive. That coyote just tried to bite off more than it could chew. It knew it couldn't tangle with the big white horse or it would get more than a kick to the head... the smaller pony may have appeared easy prey due to its size. Animals like coyotes and wolves test these larger animals for vulnerabilities like injuries or illnesses that weaken or slow them down. That coyote didn't find any, so he was on his way.
So the animal being tested for rabies isn't an essential fact? From what I read, the animal was tracked, euthanized, tested, and came back positive. It wasn't very steady on it's feet. (of course it had been beat up by both horses) but if they tested it, they tested it. I remember when I lived in Buckeye, the cats dragged a bat home. All our cats were in quarantine until the tests came back negative. Now I live in the PNW and there isn't nearly as much of an issue with rabid bats here. (thank goodness, as our incidence of bat encounters went from one per 14 years in AZ to 2 per year in OR)
