After the technical challenge of riding the Tail of the Dragon’s turn after turn, getting on the gentle curves of the Foothills Parkway was a relaxing joy. There were only a couple of delays due to ongoing work that day. Too many pull-offs to stop at them all to take in all the great views. Stopped at the Shaggy Moose in Wear’s Valley for a sandwich and coffee. Was hoping to try the Hillbilly Restaurant to see if they had squirrel or possum on the menu but they were not open. I will admit the lunch at the Shaggy Moose was great. I was surprised (not sure why) that Pigeon Forge was so big and saw a lot of architecture that seemed out of place. I got to Hot Springs Resort and Spa (and campground) well before sunset. Starting to think more about Hurricane Ian and it seems that I am not the only one thinking about it.

Hot Springs, NC has been one of my favorite Motorcycle Campgrounds for many years. Many years ago The Maggie Valley BMW Rally moved to Hot Springs and I absolutely fell in love with the area. The Campground is the actual location of a POW Encampment for German Soldiers, and they were treated so well by people who lived there, that many stayed after the Big War and sent for their families to join them in that area. I hope that you enjoy our part of the South and we will welcome your return.

Hot Springs is a geat place to use as a base camp while riding the area. Interesting about the German POWs. I'll definately be passing back thru... looks like as soon as next fall.

Nice! Great footage of the beauty. My desire also is to get people interested so they get out and enjoy the roads. Well done Jim.

What a great ride that was. The scenery was amazing for sure. Squirrel or possum sounds interesting Jim. Hopefully you did better than that. Some great campgrounds! Looks like possible flood area Jim!

lol Bryan, you're thinking what I was thinking. Great riding down there. I'm not sure what I would do if I found squirrel or possum on the menu, but I was very hungry that afternoon.

yep; pulling a trailer shortens rear tire life, brakes and gas mileage about 25%. But when you get to a camp site, all the extra stuff you can carry is a luxury!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good to see your videos. Hope your next motor cycle is working out. looking forward to seeing you next year. safe ridin rubber down
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike Год назад
I wasn't seeing too much difference in rear tire wear, just knew I would need new rubber to get me home. Rear brake pads is a different thing, although the fast wear on this set may have been due in part to the incorrect wheel install at the last tire change. Editing last year's adventure is giving me my "fix" while still looking for a replacement bike. Have my eyes on a couple. Hopefully before the snow flies I can make a deal.

Howdy from SC. I hit the buy button on my mini mate last night. The salesman “ Sheldon” said it would be about a week or maybe even 2 weeks before it ships. Does the mini mate tow best tail heavy or nose heavy. And what is the best tongue weight? Keep riding and posting and I’ll keep watching. Thanks again for all you videos Tom
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike 8 месяцев назад
Empty the MM seems to have about 30 lb. tongue weightand will tow fine but your tongue weight should increase as you fill it and add stuff on top. I run an estimated 450 lb. with a full cooler and my tongue weight is usually about 60 lb. That's 13% of total trailer weight and seems to work for me. Pack it evenly side to side. Because of my storage box on the tongue and the propane tank I counterweight that with my pots and pan tote and kitchen tote (my heaviest) behind the axle. You will find a sweet spot. You'll enjoy having the Mini Mate.

Love the fact you ride over on the right, letting you do the 2 finger salute to fellow bikers. Hard to do that in the uk with your right hand as you have to let go of the throttle, so we just nod in the UK 🇬🇧
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike Год назад
Yup, really hard to wave or signal with your throttle hand. When I started riding in the 1970s, we would give a big wave as there were so few motorcycles on the road. The hand down 2 finger salute is much quicker and has less air drag. Important when these days you could be doing one every couple of minutes or less. I do try to acknowledge other riders as much as I can, no matter what we ride, it's the fact that we are riding.

That was a great camp site and location, Your review of it to be honest sounded petty, almost like you were working to make it appear negative, Im not a troll and we all have our views, Good video as a whole.

It was a good campground. I didn't mean to sound like I was putting it down. I was foreshadowing my feeling that the lower part, where I was camped may be prone to flooding and with hurricane Ian coming in, it was a factor in me deciding to vacate and head west. For one person and a tent, it was a little pricey at around $45 USD ($60 Cdn) but luckily I did get to share the site on the second night. The showers were good. That's one of my main criteria.

ANother great vid....notice your ABS light is on...mine seems to be intermittent....is that common with ST1300 ABS?
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike Год назад
It often is due to a dirty sensor at the tone ring. I've cleaned a number of times and I should have checked the alingnment of the sensor. My FL (?) light was on steady too. The shop could not find a fault. Age, mileage and failing sensor somewhere. Neither seemed to affect performance so I was ignoring them with the plan for a full strip down and check this coming winter. With totalling the bike, I don't have to worry about that now.

Thanks for the response.....I noticed it is more when its hot....sorry to hear the ST is totalled...you had set the bar high for me and my ST....to get over 200,000km. Looking forward to your next bike.@@OldGuyonaBike

Is the ST 1300 taller than the 1800 Goldwing?
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike Год назад
Great question. I went digging through Honda specs. The ST1300 has a seat height of 31.1". The GL1800 is onlly 29.3". So yes, the ST is taller. I'm looking at used GL1500s from the '90s right now and they are 30.1". After sitting on them, I already know I need to get at least an inch to 2 inches extra leg room. One of the specs they don't give is seat to foor peg height.

How much was that Campground
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike Год назад
I believe it was $45 USD, about $60 CDN... I had it booked for 3 nights. Luckily I had someone share for a couple of those but I did not stay for the 3rd night... hurricane coming in.
