Here's what I'm reading:
The Book Of Joy: amzn.to/3JvIAZj
The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: amzn.to/41kH9DS
Atomic Habits: amzn.to/3Y2gAAV
As humans, we often thing that everyone else has it together and we're the outlier. That everyone has financial success, career success, and is living a happy life. We focus on our differences from other people and because of this we feel as if we are behind in life; however, we all have a lot more in common than we are different. In this video, I share what we as humans have in common because when you understand what we all have in common, you understand that nobody is behind in life.
“4 Human Commonalities For Anyone Feeling Behind In Life.”
1. Everyone Has “The Story”
What I have learned after meeting so many different types of people in life is that everyone has this traumatic life event that happens between ages 15-27 that they often use to hold themselves back. We all have a moment in life where we stopped being this innocent child and started to understand that life is tough; however, we often feel alone as if everyone else has gone through life without any traumas or hardships. Everyone in life has a story and we need to embrace our stories because they don't make you behind in life, but they make you a part of life. You are who you are because of your story and when you start talking about your story we see that you are not alone.
2. Everyone Measures Themselves To This One Size Fits All Scale
Society gives us this set of unwritten expectations that we should reach certain milestones at certain ages of our lives. And no matter who you are or what your goals are, I believe that we all measure ourselves up to this scale in a way and feel behind in life when we don't reach certain milestones. However, we all have different goals and circumstances in life, so it is impossible to have one single scale that everyone measures their success off of. If you are constantly measuring yourself on this scale it doesn't mean that you are behind in life, but it just means that you are following a system that isn't for you. It is important to know that we are all going through life differently and it is okay if you do not meet certain milestones at certain ages.
3. Everyone Is Their Own Worst Critic
I believe that the most dangerous place in the world is your own mind. That you are your own biggest critic. When you are constantly in your mind, it can take you to dark places and make you feel bad about yourself as if you are not enough. And oftentimes when we go to these dark places, we feel behind in life because we are constantly in this mode of comparison. These thoughts, however, are natural and no one is immune to having dark thoughts. At the end of the day, everyone is fighting their own battle and going through their own things. It is important to not think that you are the only one with these negative thoughts because nobody is immune to the dark places the mind takes you.
4. Everyone Is A Masterpiece In The Making
I heard a quote the other day by Archbishop Desmond Tutu where he said, "You are made for perfection, but you are not yet perfect. You are a masterpiece in the making." As humans, we are more similar than we are different. We all have a story, we all face the pressures of society, and we all are hard on ourselves. When you focus on our commonalities we have as humans, you understand that nobody in this world is behind in life, but we are all just figuring out life one day at a time.

I love your second point. I am 32 and single, therefore I am incomplete...according to most of society....still struggle with what others say to but I'm happy and have no desire to change this status. I have found making decisions based on what others think you should is a key ingredient to not being content.

My story? I've always thought I didn't really have one. I left school at 16 and got a job. At 17, I fell pregnant, bought a house and got married. All before I was old enough to vote.🤦🏼‍♀️ Had 3 kid's by 26. Moved states, bought and sold house's, had lots of different job's, started a successful business with my husband, sold it 14 year's later. Went back to school at 44 and finished high school which I loved. Retired at 57. Fast forward to 2023, 3 kid's grown, 5 grandkids, married almost 45 year's. Living life on my terms.

This is excellent advice. Merci. I'm 55--divorced, no kids, rent an apartment, and I dropped out of the corporate world seven years ago to work only on paying jobs and my unpaid projects that interest me. Currently, I'm doing a job alongside folks 20 to 30 years younger than I. Loving it as it affords me the time to work on my projects that may or may not turn into a dream job. I care little about keeping up with the Joneses but once in awhile I'll see an old schoolmate making bizzillions and think, "Damn, I'm behind..." Then I snap out of it, and remember all the stress I'm not feeling. Like Jordan Peterson says, compare yourself only to who you were yesterday. Follow your heart as best you can! Let the others think what they will. And most don't actually care either way and even if they do, who cares? Have a great weekend and look forward to Monday! That's what I call success. What do you call success?

@@insertmyidentityhere Glad to share. I'd suggest seeing if you can integrate what is "who you are" into your life. I try to make an hour or two for my projects each day or evening. If it's financially viable, try to get a job you enjoy better while trying to get into the other things you really like to do. Or, hey, maybe you'll get into one of them faster than you think. I bet as long as you try, you'll feel better.

Even if you do follow that scale, pretty much to a T, life will still find a way to kick you in the ass. I did everything I was “supposed” to do, on the timeline I was “ supposed” to do it, and then all of it didn’t matter anymore when my girls were born incredibly medically fragile, both with a chromosome triplication. Life will NEVER EVER go as planned. I love the quote “ Life is what happens while we are maki other plans.” Embrace the storms because they are unavoidable……..for EVERYONE.

I look at you and I see someone that for my standards is making it better and better, at least from the work/finances side of life. Being married and have kids is not ahead because the wrong marriage can end up in divorce. And kids simply means you are more stressed and broke. When you get into old age, none of yhem will care for you anyway. So, its better to wait and choose the right partner in life and dont have kids. Youll be more free, happier, and richer.

I like to keep my life simple. This means I an behind everyone my age, but it doesn't bother me anymore. I don't need a career or a high paying job, I just want something that keeps me active, and doesn't stress me out. As an introvert, I like to be alone a lot, so I don't really build many relationships, but this also helps keep my life simple. I've gotten good at not wasting money on things I don't need, and I try to enjoy doing things that don't cost much money, or things that cost no money at all.

I enjoyed this video. I went through most of my life thinking everyone had some sort of script that I didn't get. I didn't understand why I was so unhappy with the house, marriage, & kids. Deep down inside I understood there was nothing wrong with house, marriage, & kids. The problem was that I didn't make that choice, I was living the prescription society had written instead of what I wanted. To be honest, society norms made the water so murky I didn't know what I want. Thank goodness all of it is gone, house sold, marriage gone, and kids grew up and left the nest. I am finally alone and the happiest I have ever been. Everything I needed was within, no one or anything outside of you can make you happy. Everything is within.

Excellent video, Austin. I no longer have a daily meditation practice, but one of the valuable techniques I learned when I did, was to observe my thoughts from a distance and recognize that I am not those thoughts, rather, I am the one observing them. In life, we will always have intrusive negative thoughts about ourselves. When life feels more challenging, we may have more of these thoughts, other times less. But if you can see them as simply old tapes (that's what we called them then, today you might call them old digital files, LOL) recounting the same, familiar negative stories about ourselves and our limitations, they stop holding as much power over you. You learn to recognize them -- "there's that same old voice telling me I'm behind in life!" -- and just let them pass through your consciousness. You let them go (you can even thank them for sharing): in two minutes you'll have a new thought, and then another, and so on. We feel bad because we think our thoughts are US; they aren't. They're just stories from the past -- maybe there's some factual accuracy in them (certain things DID happen) but your interpretation is just that, your interpretation. If I observed your life I might have a completely different read on your life that would be equally as "true" -- in fact, since it would be more objective than your own read on your life, it might even be truer! Anyway, while these aren't my original ideas -- they come out of meditation practice -- they can really make a big difference when it comes to intrusive negative thoughts and the negative emotions WE CREATE IN OURSELVES when we believe them.

I'm also 29 and not married, no kids. Planning to cut time at work because I realized I spent all of my 20s working and have no experience in dating. I wanna fix that for my 30s. Less time at work and more time socializing.

I am 36, divorced (got married to the wrong person at 18), no children (I don't want to), earned my master's degree this year (started going to uni at 28), no own house, no car. And sometimes I have negative thoughts, but most f the time I don't give a sh*t 🤷

Based on what you laid out about your life, being being a RU-vidr, rent, and not much else as far as bills. You live a fantastic life if I were to compare it to mine. Because everything that I’m doing right now is aspiring to that simple thing. That’s not so simple, just having a place to be, have some dogs, and be able to enjoy life with my own place.

Lol. I'm moving at my own pace. I just want a cup of coffee right now. The neighbors keep trying to copy us. I'm switching concrete blocks for bricks around my flower beds. The neighbor got excited. She wanted to give me more flowers. I said no. I have 5. She backed off. As a type 3 (Live Your Truth), there's an hour in my head directing me.

Whenever you ask my father in law how someone is, he always has the same answer. Indifferent stages of development. He never talks about anyone in a negative way he just says that. It make him a safe person to talk to because you know whatever you say goes no further.
