We take a pump up garden sprayer. It is for taking a shower. You will use hardly any water at all. Fill it up and set it in the sun and the water will be hot. Also good for rinsing dishes

I have a garden sprayer also; I spray painted it black, along with a couple of empty, rinsed out laundry detergent bottles. The water heats up much faster, and you can refill from the detergent bottles.

I've learned a lot from Burning Man campers. The pump up sprayer is one of the best lessons, both for "showers" and for cooling down. And if you're dry-camping (boon docking) for an extended period, then things like an evaporation device to dry grey water to solid waste, solar power, and most of all just being a human without technology has the biggest impact. I'm often wondering what John Muir would have thought about a 30'+ RV in the redwoods.
@NorthwestRVTours

Great video with lots of great ideas. One thing we do while extended dry camping is while taking a shower we stand in a rubbermaid tote. This captures much of our water used while showering and in turn we keep a water pitcher to fill the toilet bowl prior using the restroom. It keeps the water out of our grey tank and we are able to double use the water to aid in flushing our toilets. Cutting down on water twice. Keep up the great content. Take care and Safe Travels.

As a plumber what I did to the kitchen faucet and shower head is install a water saver disk in the aerator of the faucet and the hose where it attaches to the shower head. They're about the size of a dime with a 1/8th inch hole in the center and will conserve water very well. The lavatory faucet I installed a low flow aerator that they use with an instant hot point of use electric water heater that you install under the lavatory sink it's below .5 gpm flow. This has worked great for two of us boondocking.

I have used wastewater totes for years and recommend them for everyone. If you are in a campground that doesn't have sewer hook-ups, this is easier than moving the RV just to dump. Great suggestion about the jerry can. I recommend keeping a package of sanitary wipes where my dump valves are.
@KB6YAF
@KB6YAF 7 лет назад
I am a boondocker at heart also. Don't forget those solar panels! If you are a serious boon docker, you will have to generate power to put back into those batteries, plus, a good controller (MPPT) to ensure that you are making good use of every little bit of power generated! As for the water, don't forget the "hows to's" of taking those low water consumption showers, water only needed to flush in the toilet, etc. For most couples (in an Airstream) you can last at least a week boon docking without having to go to town to dump and refill. We also save the dirty dishes for one massive clean up rather than using water each time you dirty a fork or spoon. Thanks for this video!!!
@Sandypaws55

One trick we used on the boat was a 2 gal. hand held sprayer. You can see the water level. You just pump it up to get the pressure, adjust the nozzle and do a quick rinse. Another, one of my very favorites is the 5 gallon Super Solar Shower. They're black so when put in the sun they heat the water. Both keep you keenly aware of just how much water you are using. Thank you for the great tips.

I have two suggestions: 1. Regarding the wipes, Walmart has the Equate wipes, they are as good as Cottonelle, but a lot less expensive. I buy the 3-pack for almost $4, and/or the 6-pack for $5.96. 2. I make a great body wash in an 8 oz spray bottle. Mix together, 2 oz olive oil, 2 oz alcohol, 4 oz of pure water, a few drops of peppermint oil, or tea tree oil (whatever you scent preference is.). Shake and spray on your face, etc. to wash. wipe off with a wipe or damp cloth. Thank you for this video, I always enjoy your show. Traveling Mercies and God bless you!

I’m so glad I found your videos. So I am not a camper and my first time boondocking was this year for 30 days. At which point I had a meltdown and we found a motel. At least I know my limit lol. You two are so funny. Now that I have recovered I’m strangely wanting to be out in nature again. If you guys are ever on the Oregon Coast I have a driveway you can boondock in.

Blue boys are used for black and grey water. Many can be hooked to your tow vehicle's ball and towed to the dump site. There are a lot of RV parks these days without sewer hookups, making these items essential for all RV'ers.

Love your videos. One thing we really like for our RV is our "Berkey Go" travel water filter. We have Big Berkey at our home and at our farm cabin as well and love it. Our grandkids ask for Berkey-juice instead of soda. The Go-Berkey is small so it requires more refilling than the bigger versions, but we store the Berkey juice in the Fridge and it is so good.

We're ordering our new motor home with an Onan diesel generator and a 400W roof top solar system. We don't plan to boondock but we are concerned that a bad storm may take out an RV Park/Resort's electric service. We both use electric shavers and too many other things in the RV will be useless as well. We don't have water flow restrictors in our house but can see using them in the RV so noted to the shopping list! The RV comes with an inverter but we're adding a 'whole house' surge protector. Another GREAT video, THANKS!!

We're new to the RV world, thanks for all you do! First day I discovered 2 products that few other than musicians or those with experience in studios have heard of and wanted to share. One is "Gaffer's" Tape, it looks, sticks and feels like duct tape, the only real difference is that it lifts clean off nearly any surface leaving no sticky mess behind, available in many colors and widths. The other is "Studio Foam" sound absorbing and insulating 1'x1' panels. Both are very useful, if anyone would like more info let me know. I used both building a sound reducing box for a small generator that converts to a solar hot water heater insulated with 2" recording studio foam panels. A sheet of 1/4" plywood cut in 4 pieces can connect as a 3 sided box & back to 4x8 with attached channels/cleats. 2" clear plastic (PVC also works) is attached to each piece, they connect to make 8 or more winding (like a maze) rows with a valve at the bottom. Leaned against anything in direct sun 2' off the ground on, 8 - 10 gallons can be put in, I leave an 8 gallon garden tank connected on top and a spray tank that fills on the side on the bottom. In bright, hot sunshine it will produce very hot in a surprisingly short amount of time. Thanks again for all your good deeds! info@stspros.com

If your camper is equipped with a winterizing port I will use a short hose to suck the water from my Jerry can so I do not have to hold it. It can either be left this way and change the cans as they empty or, with our camper, the gravity fill hole and outside shower is right there. I stick the outside shower hose into the gravity tank fill. Turn on the shower and the pump sucks the water from the jerry can and puts it right into my tank. Lets me walk away and do some other things for a few minutes while it drains the jerry can.

So we started using those big blue guys now for refills to the rv. Ours didn't come with a nozzle so we made one from a Gatorade bottle that worked great. The bottle now goes.with us always

Great tips! Being new to rving one of my biggest concerns is not getting stuck at the gas station. My travel trailer is under 23 feet from Hitch to bumper but with the truck the combined length is 42 feet. It would be great to see videos on navigating between the refueling Islands. Another concern is getting safely on and off of an RV roof. I’ve probably watched 50 videos of people climbing a ladder and never showing the transition from the ladder to the roof.

S and K, Two things I like to have for boondocking: A charcoal grill and disposable eating tools like plastic flatware, paper plates and cups. A charcoal grill saves propane makes BBQ flavor in most food items and keeps cooking oder and heat outside. I purchased a cheep folding grill at Walmart for $15, I also keep a non-stick, fiberglass grill mat (check B,B&B $10 for two) on hand to allow for grilling vegetables, some fruits, sandwiches and pizzas. Disposable eating tools have the upside of no water use and minor cleanup effort with a down side of more trash to dispose. Gotta weigh the pros and cons, i.e. it might be less hassle to haul trash than to haul water and regarding the grill some food is not grill friendly and it can be a bother to add fuel (charcoal) to extend the cooking time. Thanks for your list, I enjoy your channel and hope to run into you some day. Jim

Great video and suggestions as always. We have been at the TT life for a long time, and I have got to say - the blue pooper, should be one that comes with a built in loop for towing (poop is heavier than water :) Not to mention, many remote locations allow for gray water dumping (not black for anyone that reads this and PLEASE DON'T) but not at campsites. Sure would like to see how you haul yours (or do you put it in the back of your truck). We placed ours on a hitch basket, but a better and cheap solution has got to exist.

Guys: I have extensive experience wilderness backpacking ( carrying everything on your back for a 1 week hiking trip) . There are some excellent water filters for filtering stream or lake water. Some of these will filter substantial volumes of water for safe use. This would be excellent supplemental source of fresh water when boon docking. Enjoy your videos greatly.

The wipes work. We use them after obstacles course races where you can get very muddy at times.

💡Coconut oil is one item that has multiple uses. It's good for removing makeup...and can be used all over the body as well as you can cook with it.

Love your channel! I have a battery bank like you but mine is solar so it recharges it self by sun or the lighting in the RV.

If you don't want to use dry shampoo, use baby powder, just sprinkle on sectioned off areas, on roots, poof your hair to get the white powdery look off, I've done this for years, when I needed to be on the dance floor every night.

I had a hi-lo trailer that held only about 11 gallons of fresh water. My remedy was to get a 45 Gal water bag. I built a wood box that was 4 x 8 x 6". With plywood top that was hinged to open from back and put water bag in there. And stored other items on that. Then when needed I would transfer that water via hose to trailer tank.

There is a product out there called Epic Wipes for adults. Hebards Travels did a review on these and they are great. Next time we boondock, we will have these with us. They can be purchased on Amazon.

Loved the video! We're slowly switching over to LED lights to prepare for boondocking. They take a lot less power.

Thanks Jim, we'll probably do a complete video on LED soon. We have also switched over most of our interior lights to LED.

It was your video mentioning that you were switching over to LED that got us started on it. It's a bit of an experiment with what to use and where. We found the soft white lights were good in some areas of the trailer but were not enough for the reading lights over the bed.

We freeze a few gallons of water for the ice chest if we take one. It keeps the ice chest items cold and gives us drinking water that's cold. A garden sprayer left in the sun warms up great for showers , or rinsing the kids off.

Cornstarch is a super cheap dry shampoo. Just put it in a shaker jar like you get with your seasonings. Works fantastic.

Check out Goal Zero products. We always travel with our Yeti 400. Plenty of power even to charge my husbands laptop. Can be recharged from the car or solar and our trailer is lacking outlets so we even use it when hooked to power.

Considering a TT with electric only refrigerator to allow for more cold food storage. Would that require constant running of a generator when boon docking? Any thoughts?

Great ideas. My wife has complained that it takes hot water so long to get from the heater to the kitchen sink that we now but the teapot on the stove and use that for hot water in the sink.

I’m a newbie … would the 400w power inverter work to use a Cpap machine? Can I plug my cpap into the 110 V and then plug the cigarette lighter end into the RV? Would this work when the RV is not running?

If you don't want to use oil to clean makeup off your face, use lotion. I just use my moisturizer, but there are other lotion cleansers out there. Lotion won't leave your skin feeling oily.

Enjoy your videos. I made a few notes on what to get before we head out to the Mighty Five. However, a basic power inverter is a "Modified Sine Wave" and not recommended for electronic devices such as computers and tvs. It is best to have a pure sine wave inverter for sensitive electronics. Basic inverters are good for lights bulbs and small electric motors (or my soldering iron).

A pure sine wave inverter is best for sensitive electronics. I have two questions, have you ever used a fuel transfer tank in your pick up. It would seem safer and it could be filled when you get closer to your destination. Would you suggest a winch for the front of your truck?

Sean, I notice your quadrotor had a shake or wobble as you did the fly away recording. When you flew over the ruins of the desert farm house I noticed the same shimmy. Was that also a backwards? There are a couple RU-vid vids out there that discuss the issue, otherwise you quadrotor shots a good. What editing software do you and Christy use. Once again, enjoy your vids and thank you.
