I had to get a new floor jack. It hit me that how I do things is not quite normal so I wanted to share and see if its way overkill compared to what others do.
This is a Harbor Freight, Pittsburg floor jack gray 3 ton heavy duty 6000 lb rapid pump
Un-boxing, check, tighten put into service.

I laughed out loud when you put the witness marks on the bolts. Always a ride mechanic at heart. 😅

I have been using orange torque seal on my forklift for the past month. It makes me feel a lot more comfortable when I know all the bolts are properly torqued. Thank you for the suggestion and for opening my mind in taking roller coaster train maintenance to other machinery in my life!

Harbor freight is definitely cheap, however, my deadblow, impact sockets and breaker bar have lasted over 11 years - all harbor freight😂

It's probably a tad overkill, but considering the industry you're coming from, I'm not surprised at all. When it comes to safety, overkill is king. I certainly didn't go through any of this when I bought my jack. Honestly a simple grease check and a nut and bolt couldn't hurt
@LTCoasters
@LTCoasters 4 месяца назад
You are the first person I have seen so through. Most people I know would just use it. Was surprised to see a man read the instructions😂 That part I do. I see the safety training from your years as a ride mechanic. I will say it was interesting and did learn a few things I didn't know. Like the oily box being so bad.
@ryantheridemechanic
@ryantheridemechanic 4 месяца назад
Well you can knock the plug loose and leak hydraulic fluid in the box. Then good luck finding the exact fluid that’s supposed to be in there. The manual didn’t even list the type of fluid it takes.
@LTCoasters
@LTCoasters 4 месяца назад
@ryantheridemechanic Not surprised companies cut corners in odd ways, so you have to buy another one. People ask me very through questions sometimes about an appliance and even researching I can't find the answer. Like decibels on a washer. I have tried multiple times to find the answer. Another is how much water it uses in its cycles. If I can't find the answer, how can help my customers. And god forbid, if I get a question about the electrical system. 🤬🤬
@ryantheridemechanic

@@LTCoasters yea that’s rough. Most of the time if you can’t find an answer, means they don’t know.

Just a few days ago, I ordered a hydraulic car jack from Amazon. Part of the package was drenched in oil. The manual was drenched in oil. It wouldn't pass Check #1. Extremely helpful video as I imminently inspect my replacement!!!

So I've parlayed my industry specific knowledge of equipment into a fleet mechanic position for a large landscaping and excavation company. As it is I've been the guy in charge of the specialty work and repairs given my diversity of skill so it has been incredible to expand my purpose. I have the previous generation of this model and have gotten great use from it. One thing i will say is it would be nice to have the rubber pad with the jack. We just picked up 2 new mowers, some new backpack blowers. First thing I did was check wheel motors and hydro pump magnet caps for metal shavings. I always go through and check over brand new equipment as if it were 30 years old "easier to see bullsh** before it's covered in dog sh**"
@ryantheridemechanic
@ryantheridemechanic 4 месяца назад
Haha! I like that phrase! One thing I’ve done with bigger equipment was went around and took pictures and documented all part numbers and serial numbers before they might be covered or destroyed. This one has the serial on the outside of the frame which is great for viewing but it will be gone quick!!
@TrueLies23
@TrueLies23 4 месяца назад
@@ryantheridemechanic Great idea! Do you have any recommendations for, in general, what to do when equipment/parts become obscure and difficult to find? I was watching Wheeler Dealers and it made me think about sourcing parts that are no longer manufactured. Is it just a game of critical thinking and predicting what might be a compatible substitute based on available variables? Or do you just fabricate yourself? I made my own flywheel key, no big deal, but if I can't find a sintered bearing I'm probably not gonna be able to whip one up 😂
@ryantheridemechanic
@ryantheridemechanic 4 месяца назад
@@TrueLies23 honestly depends on the price point of the equipment. I have to remind myself the majority of people out there will not try and make repairs they will just replace. Then in your case you might be holding on to all parts until you reach hoarder status and can’t find anything. If I can’t find parts at all I either retrofit or replace. Rare do I fabricate my own components, I’ve tried and failed a lot. Or I was able to make a replacement but the new part only lasted 1/8 the time the old one did. Usually because something was heat treated

I have a small garage... so I tried an $80 12v Vevor hydraulic jack - 5 ton. I will never go back to a pump jack. Much faster, more stable and higher lift. Small footprint, so jack stand locations and working under the car is much better. I've had various pumpjacks...as you lift, there is a small longitudinal movement/stress... this 12V jack is very stable all the way to top. As a bonus, it has a light...it's great. It also has an air compressor, so a neat 3 in one for the road too. Would love to add a 12V Milwaukee battery to make it portable...but I'm a little lazy nowadays..
@ryantheridemechanic
@ryantheridemechanic 4 месяца назад
That’s very interesting! How long does it take to get up to its full lift height under load?
@mmocken
@mmocken 4 месяца назад
@@ryantheridemechanic I’d say about 2 minutes from zero to full extension. So a rapid pump is much faster, but I’d rather watch the lift at ground level and often inspect as it lifts

What kind of light blue grease is that and why did you pick it? What do you use in roller coasters? I gotta ask ChatGPT someday re: sodium vs molybdenum vs lithium and why it's used. I just bought some Tribolube 71 for scuba stuff and use Nyogel 760G for flashlights.

Unboxings are always fascinating. This was tied into the theme of your channel nicely. 7:30 The old “I’ll see if I can do this with one hand since I’m holding a camera” unboxing. Not a true unboxing video if you don’t do that lol 12:50 “Witness Marks” (I never knew the terminology or that paint pens were used) in order to get it approved & certified by the State Agricultural Dept before it can operate for the public. You have to do amusement park taste testing videos to make your channel complete!
