I’ve been thanking everyone for their kind and supportive comments - but first and foremost I have to thank my Son, Heliopolix, for introducing me to variant sudoku, and for the absolute honor of his birthday request to CTC to solve my very first puzzle. Everyone should have a son so fine as he!
Happy birthday to your son! This was a very nice puzzle. My mum has been wanting to get started on variant sudoku. I might just set up a list of puzzles for her introducing her to the various rules one by one, and have this puzzle as the final puzzle to combine all the different concepts. It's very approachable, I enjoyed solving it a lot!
I've gotten to know Jan a bit over the past few months and have had the pleasure of seeing her gain confidence and expertise as both a solver of variant sudoku, and very recently as a setter! I'm thrilled to see this featured! Congratulations to Jan, and a very happy birthday to Heliopolix!
This is a really lovely puzzle, definitely put up a challenge at the start until I figured out what was going on. The solve count increased by about 200 people in the 25 minutes I spent on it, hope everyone else enjoyed it as much as I did 😁 Happy birthday Heliopic and nice work Cheerfuljanb!
Really fun puzzle! I think Mark may have made a bit of a logical leap at 6:20 though in assuming r4c5 couldn't be a 6 unless I'm missing something, I think he just got lucky being right there
It is possible he just did not state that it could not be a six because of box 2 - but it clearly cannot be a 6. It is not "lucky," I think. Just, well, nearly immediately obvious.
Yeah the replies to this are definitely right and I used the logic when I solved it myself. Just didn't seem like Mark noticed it, as it's the type of thing he and Simon normally walk through their logic on and he seemed to only be using german whisper logic at this point
I questioned why at first, too, but I think it likely was because of the white dot to box 2. I then found it slightly ironic that the reason he didn't articulate his reasoning just then was because he was too busy articulating that he was struggling to articulate his thoughts today. 😂
@@dibot No, Mark didn't get lucky at 7:23. He had all four positions marked for the high digits in row 3 (6789). After he placed 8 in c5, there was only one of those four that could be the 6. (C1 couldn't be 6 because it was on an X and 4 had already gone in the row. C3 couldn't be a 6 as it would require 1s either side of it on the German Whisper). 6 could only go in c9.
I am so incredibly proud of Jan getting this feature! It has been an incredible privilege to get to know Jan over the last few months and be able to call her a friend. She is a wonderful lady with a heart of gold, who never fails to put a smile on my face, just as her name suggests! We've watched her entering the sudoku community to support Helio, to starting to make small deductions, to solving to setting and now she has a much deserved feature! This makes my heart happy! Congratulations Jan and Happy Birthday Helio 💜💜💜
What a nice puzzle. Approachable but with some fun logical turns :) Tbh, Mark, the fact that you were able to name a Southwestern city that wasn't Las Vegas or in California, and identify its state, is already impressive from someone who doesn't live in or near the US, haha.
I used to be totally bamboozled by Dutch whispers, especially if they were anywhere near German whispers. But today it made sense to me and I did not get lost at all. Thanks, Mark, for featuring new constructors, and happy birthday to Heliopolis!
Thank you, Mark! I am very proud to be my mother's son and I'm grateful for your generosity in sharing her artful puzzle with the world. Thank you everone for your kind comments and well wishes. I love you, Mom!
I pulled a (better than usual for me) 19:39. Don't think I ever found myself stuck, as there were plenty of things to bounce between with the solve. I disambiguated r2-4c5 by realizing r2-3c6 had to be a 56 pair, and 9 couldn't go in r3c5. I kept my coloring going through the whole puzzle, as it helped me spot where numbers might be high or low.
@@janellebrady7184 Hardly an expert, just someone who's done FAR too many puzzles over the past year and has caught on to a lot of the 'tricks' to help speed my solve up. I still struggle with the much harder puzzles, but regardless, wonderful puzzle from you, loved it!
These are really neat to watch. Hopefully I can ever figure out how to get one started. It makes sense when watching it explained but when I try my brain just goes "wot"
I totally understand this! I used to have this very thought about a puzzle of this difficulty (as evidenced by the length of the video). Now I do just jump in (perhaps I listen to the rules first, though) when the video is this short. But some of the longer ones are just as you say - makes perfect sense when I watch Mark (or Simon) do it, but I cannot make any headway at all when I look at it by myself! So I would suggest, just start the puzzle as best you can. Make any pencil marks you can, and whenever you get so you can't do the next thing, just watch the video. Eventually you will find that you have finished the puzzle before getting stuck - well done you!
Fun design....one of those how many rules/constraints can I remove to keep it still solvable. Don't like much givens or singular white dots. And great fun, one can elim all the givens and most of the white dots. Kept the XV, black R2 dots ,D5 and D4 lines As well as C5:3cell white dots which orients the D5. Surprisingly didn't need the B4:3cell whitedot. The fun is in DD the D4 trees. First time around had the 4s in the 5s spots leading to err....2nd time manage to see the 2Ls separated by 2 cells...and that was the key for me. Crazy 6whitedots and ,3cell and the givens weren't needed. The sun as quadcircle would probably be too much giveaway too
I finished in 13:21 minutes. This was a cute themed puzzle with some cool geometry between the lines. It felt like a very nice approachable sudoku. I think my favorite part was resolving the three black dots in the bottom left by using the given three clue. The given three clue gives a 789 next on the line, followed by a 1245. On the other side of the three clue gives a low parity, which forces r7c2 to be a low parity, eliminating 8. Combined, it can be cleverly ruled out that 8 can't belong on the right line as this forces a 124 into the black dots, while also forcing the next cell after 8 to also be part of 124. This breaks and 9 is ruled out by the line to the right of it. Very clever setting. Go Jan Go! Great Puzzle!
Thank you so much @chocolateboy300! I am glad you liked the puzzle. I appreciate your comments. I am quite intimidated at the thought of setting a puzzle. Glad this one worked out after much trial and error.
Slowly savored this sudoku in 01:24:59. Made a mistake thinking the Dutch whispers line in the middle extended up one more and had to back out a bit, but nevertheless this was great fun and it's quite beautiful. Not sure if these additions would make the puzzle too easy, but it could be said that the digits around the sun form a consecutive set of four numbers in any order, and that the digits on the blossoms form a compete set of the digits 1-9 except with one missing digit and another digit repeated to take its place.
Peter thank you so much for your kind words. If the truth be known, I originally had a kind of renban circle instead of the sun and had included the “ consecutive numbers in any order” as part of my rules set. I like how you noticed that each of the flowers was one through nine with the exception of the 3. Good spotting. 👏👏👏

Yay! Solved it in 10 mins 34 secs which is still faster than you Mark! I won over you again “Acknowledge me”😂😂 only wrestling fans can relate to quoted line
Did I like this grid? Very much! But the ornaments in it were such That they messed with my head For the flowers of red Always seemed like more whispers of Dutch.
Thank you. I am glad you liked the puzzle. Yes, it was a balance between trying to recreate the desert scene, and stay true to variant sudoku. If the truth be known, I tried to make sun in the corner a renban - as the numbers work, just not the sun for artistic flair.
