Well isn't this every historic house-hunters dream come true? What a FIND! This week on Preservation Travels with Laine and Kevin we have a stunning Victorian Era Stick Style home, located in the heart of the Spa City. What could be better than the fact that this beauty is located just blocks from world famous Bath House Row? The fact that it sits on over 2 ACRES OF LAND!!
With this Victorian beauty you'll be surrounded by all the amazing beauty of nature, but walking distance to all the sites. In your backyard you have a spring fed pond filled with lotus and water hyacinths. Just off the wooded acres you have a private pool to relax in while you watch the deer wander your grounds.
Inside the home retains so many of it's spectacular original elements, including a breathtakinf staircase, faux bois doors, etched glass transoms, encaustic tiles, and SO much more. The home is the very epitome of 19th century luxury, located in a city visited by gangsters and royalty alike.

I love this gorgeous home. If it was mine, I'd want to bring the kitchen back to more of its original loveliness and tie it back into the rest of the grandeur of this stunning home.

What I find serendipitous is that your original dream home that began this adventure was lost in a fire but now you're fixing up your forever home which was almost lost in a fire. Funny how life works out sometimes. I'll probably comment on this house later after I watch it! 😊
@JayYoung-ro3vu
@JayYoung-ro3vu 9 месяцев назад
I've lived/am living in a almost lost to fire home. The fire damage in the first one took it from a two story down to 1 one story bungalow. It's hidden secret was in the attic and how all the remaining woodwork finish was bubbled. In the second one, the fire prevention did more damage than the actual fire. The home lost all the plaster ceilings and most of the walls. However, original hardwood flooring, linen, closet and medical cabinet remain.

@@JayYoung-ro3vu I don't know if I'm happy for you that some treasure remains or sad for you for all that you lost. Funny how a blessing can be wrapped up in tragedy. Glad you still have a place to call home. 💞

@@zanna9857 Thank you. Mixed blessing. I equate my current home to my late grandmother: resilient, no-nonsense, and standout in a crowd. I have one of two homes in the plat identical to each other. Both are "different" in the context of the respective streets.
@zanna9857
@zanna9857 9 месяцев назад
@@JayYoung-ro3vu I equate my home to my grandfather but only b/c he built it in the 1940s. I never met him. I have some beautiful mid-century modern fixtures but other things like the kitchen cabinets, counter, backsplash & trim are really gross! Trying to update the house w/out losing some of the charm is hard. Where are you? I'm in Northeast Ohio...the arctic north! 😄

@zanna9857 Mine is primarily a Cape Cod from 1913. It has at least three other design elements to it, so it can be called a Cape Cod vernacular. Southwestern Ohio. Not exactly warm down here.

HOLEY MOLEY !!!!! This was built and mostly preserved for my favorite styles and tastes. It's just gorgeous!!! I'd really love to see it when it gets the astonishingly beautiful exterior colors and quality paint job it deserves. That will be incredible. Unless it needs any substantial structural updates, that place is ready enough for me! Yeah, the picture rails need to go back where they belong, and that wallpaper.., oh my!😆 There's a couple of bathrooms that could be redone, and in 68 years I've never lived that far from the ocean, but ah... what an absolute dream of a house it is. WOW.

What a Gorgeous house, but that rose wallpaper in the large formal parlour is to busy and jarring. William Morris paper or some other historical wallpaper would be more in keeping with this amazing house.

Define what is a "Stick Style" home? I'd like a video with comparisons on what the different types of homes are called and why. Could we get a video of that please?
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 9 месяцев назад
Characteristics The Stick Style is characterized by verticality, angularity, asymmetrical composition, and, because it was expressed predominately in wood, a certain fragility. Materials Predominately executed in wood, the wall surfaces of Stick Style houses are angled, ornamented, varied in plane, and generally accentuated for an overall effect. Applied wood trim creates a paneled effect that is filled in with various materials such as vertical, horizontal, or diagonal boarding. The boarding is often beaded. Wood shingles of various patterns may also be used as infill. Roof Freestanding Stick Style houses were designed with steeply pitched gable roofs. Smaller cross gables often intersected the larger roof, and small shed dormers can be found. Urban town houses had an ornamented cornice that concealed the roof. Often the town house had a bay window with a decorative gable roof built over the top of the bay. On costly examples the roof shingles were slate or wood and sometimes laid out in a multicolored pattern.

Who puts the air conditioner/heat pump at the front of the home and not hide it?!? Even when I swtiched to gas for my 1911 bungalow, I was appalled where they required the gas meter . . . in the front of the house! Luckly, I was able to paint it the same color as the house, and it is also hidden behind a 100 year old rhododendron. Still, this a stunning home.

OMG! This has to be one of my all-time favorites of yours! GORGOEUS! Many or your homes are in questionable urban neighborhoods (so sad), but this gem is truly country in the city having its own compound! You melt my heart because I grew up in a Queen Anne with a slate roof and a three-story tower razed in 2000. I LOVE your videos and respect for history and its details!!! Please keep making these. They "center" me! Cleveland destroyed mostly all of Millionaires Row, so nice to see some of Victorian history beauty and craftmanship is still preserved in other places, we're losing them here.

Despite not living in it for over 20 years, we got to tour it beforehand. It was in a time warp including our names still on the intercom!! I did not want to see it being razed. I don't want to have that vision stuck in my mind. 3 story condos now sit on it's land in Shaker. :( @@icemancometh8679

I love to see a combination of styles that show that a house stayed in a family for generations. What a shame that in the attic bathroom there's a 1980's sink and shower though. At least they left the radiant heater. I can't think of another single house in that area that has radiant heat. It's an anomaly just as our fireplace here on Galveston Bay is. I wonder if someone from up north married into the original family in that Victorian and designed it so that they wouldn't miss the features that they were used to. It's a possibility.

This is a huge house! I'm obsessed with the black and red hearth tiles in that first parlor. Since I can never stop analyzing things, my thought is that the parlor in front of the dining room was the formal one, which may have (as you said) had columns or pocket doors in order to close off the space. What I wonder is if the transoms in the other two parlors were there because it's south or west facing and more likely to be warm during the day? Or perhaps one was considered a summer parlor, and the other for winter. Interesting (I don't know much about this) that this home in Hot Springs had radiators (which are gorgeous, by the way), and the overall design seems to differ from the many homes you've shown us with wide central hallways and jib doors for air flow. Does the area get much colder than Natchez? Always a treat to see these tours, and the Christmas decor was just icing on the cake. :)
