I am 77 and my advice is if you want to live long : dont give it a second thought its the concern that will kill you . If I die tomorrow, so what . I excercise 3 hrs a day because I enjoy it not because I want to live long

My mother is 98. She had eighteen children. They are all healthy. She has two secrets: 1. incredible optimism. Can you imagine having 18 kids and never worrying? Thats my mom. 2. eating healthy. At age six she read a book on vegetables and made a commitment to healthy living. She never had a cigarrette, a cup of coffee, or alcohol. She still remembers the name and author of every book she read. For a while she read three books a day. Still sharp as a tack, has perfect eyesight.

TSTVM ...it is true....but having said that by how much would our life expectancy increase if in the next 10 years we find a cure for cancer? How much will it increase if we develop wearable monitors that provide the equivalent of a daily body scan?... I believe we could certainly increase life expectancy by 50 years very quickly...just with these two developments. The other consideration is that let’s say 40 years from now, you will be 100...just think what therapies will be available to you 40 years from now. They may be able to actually reverse certain aspects of aging and re-set you back to 50 or 60.

@@kapildeori7432 I know. But if it makes you feel any better, there is hope to slow it down if not prevent altogether thanks to new technologies. Believe me, I've been scared and anxious about this for the past 2, 3, or 4 days and when I saw that video, it did make me feel better because it does make me optimistic about living forever or at least living longer and it did help comfort me a little bit. Not too much but a little. I've also done some hobbies that I like such as playing basketball and singing that have helped a little bit but still not too much. If I don't get better, I will definitely go see a psychiatrist or a psychologist or something because it's so sad and scary to think about and it's starting to affect my daily life tremendously as I'm not eating right or sleeping right. Don't lose hope. I almost did but not anymore because of the promising news. Let's just hope for the best. Thanks for sharing and take care 😃. Remember, no matter what happens you are not alone okay? Many people including myself feel the same way and it's honestly helped me just share this because I've kept it in for myself for so long and I really needed to get it off my chest. “So live your life so the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their views, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a stranger if in a lonely place. Show respect to all people, but grovel to none. When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life and strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies in yourself. Touch not the poisonous firewater that makes wise ones turn to fools and robs them of their visions. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.” Tecumseh

A Native American who lived 250 years ago knew what it meant to live as a man. He doesn't have what we have now. But his words rang true for many generations to come. We have lost our meaning for life and confused a 'good life' with the pursuit of wealth, sex and a luxurious living. Tecumseh lived a persecuted life but his words reflected a free man. He died at age 45 fighting for what he believed in. Rockefeller and Carnegie may have lived longer and infinitely more wealthy. But Tecumseh has my respect.

This maths is flawed , The average age in the past was drastically brought down by babies dying and infants before the age of 3 or 4 dying , If you made it past your 20s you were pretty much on the way to living older , People 400 years ago lived till 100 years old no problem , The only difference today is that less people are dying young which pushes up the average age , If you have 10 people, 1 person lives to 100 and 9 of them die at the age or 2 the average age is 11.8 years old , If you take 10 people and 9 of them live to 50 and 1 of them lives to 100 the average age is 55 It's not the people are living older , were just not dying at birth any more, A lot of the oldest living regions in the worlds are regions without access to modern medicine and the age expectancy in America is actually dropping for the first time in 100 years or so Advancement in medicine does not equal old age , sometimes the opposite with all the pharmaceutical drugs

Then when I hit my mid 40's and both of my parents were gone it's like well I now have nobody I can turn to. I was going through a divorce on top of it and left the US Arrmy after 12 years of service. I entered at an older age I was 33. So with the problems I had with my wife and our kids were still young we had in our mid to late 30's so I had a mountain of responsibility, I could not transition into a decent job due to age discrimmination and a tough economy too. I did transfer into the Army Reserves a Sergeant in order to continue service (now 45 years old) - and have some kind of a career. And my son is autistic low functioning and so my wife had to deal with it, and also our take care of daughter who was normal thank God. So my wife had to do a lot while I was working at what was now gig jobs and a Reservist a weekend a month. Our relationship grew more and more distant and I had to recover from being stabbed in the right arm by her. I had to have surgery in the back of the bicep area when the median artery is, and the nerve had to be checked for damage. So one good thing was I got 90 days of work, on orders at the Reserves when I asked if I could. We were separated I did not press charges on her because I was worried about our kids. A few months later she went to court for an assault charge and was given probation by the court. I remained on my own always supporting them financially and compromising my own life. The Dept.of The VA awarded me VA Compensation at a decent amount and financially helping us out greatly. I got the divorce and also finished 20 years of military service through the Reserves, I was 54 when I retired from there in 2018. Today I am in a local rock band as a bassist, I just recently got the gig, chasing a dream I had in the early 1980's when I was still a teen. Believe in a higher power, I was saying prayers to Jesus all the time over these years maybe because my mother always believed in Him and told me that prayers can work. @@TakeBackYourMind997 Peace for me has alway came from the spirit of Christ meaning positive thinking being internalize through spirit and the knowledge of God and wisdom. for me when Im able to stop allowing the world to influence my thoughts and attitudes in negative ways and Im able to think for myself my own positive thoughts not by news or not by television and media but from God’s eternal will for us to be free as it was when there were no outside negative influences like in the beginning before the fall of man the good that is in me trying to help when I see someone needs help I’m able to manifest peace in my inner being through thoughts and spirit this is the only times I have been able to experience real peace and before I was able to experience that peace I always had to change something about myself and change my attitude about life and stop doing those things that I knew were keeping me from experiencing that peace and I think we all know to some degree what our bad habits are and when I’m able to start thinking love first instead of judge help first instead of hurt actions like these has always brought peace to my soul and life everyone say its better to give than to receive the Bible teaches those same principles and until I really consciously did that it was always hard to experience real peace even I don’t understand why when experiencing this kind of peace the world looks like a lot different to me I can only say it have to be God working through me to experience that level of peace from my experience. even when I think positive thoughts and show love as a action I find that if my motive is there but the action is not I think peace can still be achieved cause the motives are right and by having my mind right I have found that my way of thinking can also lead to inner peace from my experiences

@@Lightinthedark730 This is so interesting because you and I have different world views, but I live by many of the same principles you spoke about there. Funny how different paths can lead to the same destinations. I think that's a sign of universally true concepts, like the fact serving others brings deep happiness and fulfillment to our lives. I totally get what you're saying about positive thinking changing the way the world looks, I believe our focus determines the world we live in. Focus on the bad that's what you'll see, focus on the good and you'll live in a good world. Thanks for sharing, I'm glad you found your positive path in life!

@@FxChris27 I'm 80 now, and just started construction on a new house, also completing construction on an ATV I've been building for two years now. We just upgraded our RV to enhance our travels . We have found that when traveling, the jewels of the journey are the people we meet and the stories we collect. I am just starting to experiment with just how far can I carry container gardening on our deck (55'x 14') as an eventual replacement for our green house. I just had a meeting with my oncologist. he says 5 plus years. All of my other systems are probably good for a hundred. All of this has made me contemplate the meaning of life ( not in the religious sense). I have come to the conclusion that the best thing you can do with your life is to enrich the life experiences of the next generation. Although I never had children of my own the most precious thing (except for my loving wife) I can hold on to is adding to the lives of my grandchildren and sharing the joy of discovery with them. They are all young adults now and love just as hard as if they were my own. I am fully cognizant that my planning horizon is not as long as it used to be but still embrace each day with a zest for learning and doing and will continue to do so as long as I am able. Perhaps the tongue in cheek way to put it is "I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up".

@@FxChris27 I recently passed 80. To be honest I found it unsettling becoming "the tip of the spear" since so many of my colleagues and friends are no longer here. However, it seems that was a kind of passage I had to work through. While my planning horizon may not be as far off as in the past I still embrace life with gusto, still learning everyday. I am just now putting the finishing touches on an ATV I started designing and building two years ago. We are currently building a new house with more shop space so I can better indulge my hobbies of designing and building things. My next project, a 3/4 scale replica of a Model T hot rod. My theory is the process of creating and building keeps me mentally agile.

I did leave out that I am now dealing with a cancer that can be slowed but not cured ( at least today) . My wife and I enjoy traveling in our RV, we tow an ATV that we use on beaches for surf fishing. I did experience some anxiety when turning 80. However, I have become comfortable with the idea of getting the most living I can out of what I call the "new normal", whatever it is on a given day. My curiosity to learn is still intact. I'm now finishing a still for making ethanol. and learning how to make English style longbows from split and seasoned oak logs.

With all that said there are things you cannot control such as health issues and we all have our share, I am fortunate to have my wife of 50+ years to share daily activities with but constantly think more so of my expiration date due to losing friends as they pass or anyone 75 - 80 years. BTW I am a Vietnam vet, quit riding my motorcycle in 2018, and drink on the average 3 beers per day (good stuff). God Bless you all

But I have this fear of aging now not just because of my youth, not just because of my fertility but because of my fear of not being able to achieve my goals such as going to college, becoming a cartoon artist, traveling and my fear of losing my mental youth because my two favorite colors are pink and purple, I like being funny, I just like myself this way. It’s too much pressure for me and my mind to handle. I want to let go of all that fear but I don’t want to let my guard down of making sure that I don’t physically or mentally age fast.

Covid or whatever it was had me sick for almost 2yrs. My wife had a baby during covid. I went to bed worried i wouldnt wake up almost every night. This messed with my head. My health got better but my mental health is still suffering. I never worried about death or the future but now I have periods of time i want to run down the street screaming because my anxiety runs over me, fear of my daughter growing up, and the happiest time of my life ending. Worry about getting older and suffering in whatever way it may come. I worry about losing my wife to age or bad health. All these negative thoughts i never had before now flood my brain. Im trying my best to come to peace with my present and what will be my future. But once the mind is messed up its hard to come back and move on. I pray everyday that I wont feel these things and I can go back to being truly happy. Im trying my best. But i think the next step is therapy.

Somehow, try to enjoy the challenges in your life, and work as hard as you can to achieve your dreams.

Don't forget that the low life expectancy in the 19th century was mostly due to a high infant mortality.

The life spans of many many oldtimers was quite long...the average was brought way down by the number of those who died in childbirth and from childhood ailments but those who survived these often lived to ripe old ages and did so without allopathic medical intervention.

A peaceful life is about acceptance and love. We will all die. Some of us will be relatively vibrant at death. Some of us, the body will break down, some more than others. All the money in the world won’t matter. In today’s materialistic society, it’s a reminder that following your passion is more important than chasing money. If you are fortunate, your financial security comes from following your passion. I was diagnosed at 49 with stage 4 melanoma. It did not spread and had it removed. The illness was a gift, and gave me a second lease on life. I wrote my book. I created my art. I had the great romance of my life. This second chance gave me a sense of urgency, to do what I came here to do. I’ll admit, I still have bouts of anxiety and a sense of dread of aging and dying. However, my biggest fear is not really living. And the fear? In wisdom, I sit with the fear, acknowledge it, and accept that this fear will soon pass. Love always returns.

You are right when you say that the age span has risen - but this is not true for everyone. For those of the lowest class who cannot afford health insurance, decent food and housing, and who are constantly fighting for their bare survival - well, for those the prospects for a long life are not rosy...

if we have Faith in Christ and the Sacraments He gave us then we need not fear death. life in this vale of tears is very very short despite what Patrick is saying, if you live to be a 100 it goes by in the blink of an eye, then comes Eternity

Not to diminish your point but the low life expectancy in the past was mostly due to a high infant mortality rate. People who survived infancy would have a life expectancy that was more in line with what we consider normal today.

@@mikechrist9699 no, I strongly believe in our Lord Jesus Christ. If it wasn't for His peace, love and forgiveness I would be a total mess. I do have anxiety but He knows my heart and He is always there holding my hand throughout the entire time. Don't ever lose hope, seek Him everyday. This too shall pass. You got this!
