For Whom The Bell Tolls - Cliff Burton intro 1984

A follow-up to my previous video! Recorded over bass backing track(meaning; no original bass, just my own) and played in spirit of live shows in 1984/85
Signal chain remains the same with the adition of a pitch shifter for an extra menace ;)
The bell keeps on ringing for You Cliff! Lets make some goddamn thunder, now, shall we?!?!

Fun fact: you might notice that this video resembles a lot to the studio recording of the song(apart from the obvious licks and embellishments)...thats because the studio version of the song, right channel has a pitch shifted intro(altough, at that time it was simply done by tapping harmonics in a separate track and regular lead intro in another track...tapping harmonics like the ones you can hear at the end of "Anesthesia", later on in 1984 during the Ride the Lightning tour Cliff obtained an Ibanez HD1500 harmonizer to blend pitch shifted sound with regular 'pwb ts9 delay' in order to reproduce that mean effect live) 😊

@@johnlynch660 while its been discussed many times around my comment sections...as for hd1500 i really have never seen that unit in person let alone played with it...but basically i would try to match everything by ear(which is how i do everything...every piece of gear is different and with any other piece of gear added to pre existing setup will require some adjustments)....that being said...i would go bass(open volumes and tones)>pwb(use boost if needed more distortion, but carefully)>ts9(gain all the way up, volume and tone set to your liking)>hd1500(pitch shifter one octave up blended with your regular tone...delay three or four repeats in relatively quick time compare to how cliff set his or in my previous video, you can hear the delay speed in the intro)>amp (eq really depends on the amp and the room you play in...but overall if it has gain knob...set it strong before it goes to clipping, bass enough to get beefy tone but not too muddy...treble so you have enough bite and then mids to get clarity but not overly honky) i hope this helps at least a bit...but thats really a general question and needs experimenting

Because holy crap, this gave me the most spine chilling goosebumps I’ve ever had in my life. Great job again!!! 🤘🤘 What do you suggest about minimum effect pedal requirements for most of Cliff's bass-lines? My economy isn't well nowadays but music keeps me standing against all the hardships. Do I really need all of the delay, reverb, flanger, octave, wah, compressor/sustainer, chorus, etc pedals? Even if I do, which ones I should find/buy/steal first?
@KeeperOfCliffsTone
@KeeperOfCliffsTone Год назад
Thanks man! I assume you speak of the solo tone...i would say...minimum(to sound pretty much the same) would be a good wah(thats the only thing you have to pay more money for really), tube like overdrive(can be a guitar one and there are plenty of cheap options) and some delay(could be a cheapest ever...it will give you that arena/space atmospheric vibe which cliff often had)...that would be the bottom line i say(to give really good results aka almost identical)...and a bass with a bridge pickup helps(but as seen here i didnt have one at the time and it still worked well)...if you have any more questions feel free to ask :D (i didnt want to say any specific pedal brand because it depends on your budget but other than wah i think other two can be found for a really reasonable prices)

@@KeeperOfCliffsTone You're so helpful and kind. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. In my country, there are some used products available which I can afford; such as Morley classic wah pedal. Just not the CB's tribute Power Fuzz Wah. I've never used wah pedal before so I don't know much about selecting or using them for now. The only thing I know is that I should avoid buying signature products with musician's name on them. IF we take Morley WAH pedals in consideration as it is Cliff's default, do you think I need a model with specific extras or the classic would do with the delay pedal and a tube overdrive?
@KeeperOfCliffsTone
@KeeperOfCliffsTone Год назад
@@LethaL_DonkeY i'd go with morley bass wah to be sure...it works for me ^ :) got one used too
@KeeperOfCliffsTone
@KeeperOfCliffsTone Год назад
Like i said...it depends on the rest of your gear but some guitar wah pedals i tried(pro series wah volume, cliff tribute wah, some dunlop crybaby...etc and we talk just WAH here) didnt work quite as good as this bass wah of mine(they needed extra front push as wah on its own on those pedals was too weak to make those screams compared to my bass wah and just ended up chewing the dirt a bit with not much of an effect)...they work great for jason tone(dirt before wah in chain...meaning bass>dirt>wah>amp...giving more synth like sound..check out for whom the bell tolls live with jason 89 or so to hear that sound) but cliff had it typical guitarist way(bass>wah>dirt>amp...which gives more natural sounding "guitar like" wah) and most guitar wah pedals i tried didnt work great for that and needed another dirt in front of it(bass>some dirt>wah>another dirt>wah) and that was too fizzy (because you stack two distortion pedals) compared to cliff sound(and thats how most people sound on youtube with mostly some fuzz in front of the wah and some drive after)....this morley bass wah i have has different wah sound to it which is much more expressive on bass than other wah pedals i tried(and in turn, i only have compressor>wah>drive>delay)...so if i were you i would really try to get morley bass wah...as for the distortion, if you dont need his regular drive sound(non solo tone...rhythm tone so to speak, like those on ride the lightning isolated tracks) you can get big muff cheap behringer clone(called behringer vintage distortion) that will get you spot on anesthesia album tone...but if you want to sound more like later albums(ride or master) and live sounds and need rhythm tone too...get something like tube screamer for distortion(digitech bad monkey may be a good choice or joyo vintage overdrive or even some or just about any 'green overdrive') :) and if you have any more questions dont hestitate...i had my fair share of crap before i figured this tone out so i know how much it means when someone helps...but bottom line...go for a bass wah if you can find one used...and go for just about any distortion pedal(most will do...just pick more vintage ones not too modern hi fi sounds)

I think one detail that don't totally understand is I believe that that one note after the chromatic descent seems more like a string noise thing when Cliff does it. When you listen to Cliff play it you don't really hear that note sound while he clearly moves his finger to it, unlike Trujillo who frets the note. Jason never played that "extra note" and in the studio version's variatons you can clearly hear one that doesn't have that noise.
@KeeperOfCliffsTone
@KeeperOfCliffsTone Год назад
I know which note you talk about...i believe cliff sometimes did it sometimes not(depending on variation in a riff) sometimes its more pronounced(when wah is further down) sometimes more muffled...you can go either way i guess...and that string noise sound is probably from the wah backing off(especially with some delay) at the same time as he plays the note...i dont even know how i played in this video man you destroyed my brain now hahah i will be too aware of that note from now on

@@KeeperOfCliffsTone yea what you say makes alot of sense, never thought of seeing it that way.
