Meet Marion Stokes. In 1979, Marion began recording TV 24/7, capturing sitcoms, news and everything in between. She was determined to preserve television history that networks were constantly erasing to save money and free up storage space. As a former librarian and activist, Marion was passionate about access to information. She sometimes had as many as eight tapes spinning away at once. Even getting her family in on the act. “We’d be out at dinner and we’d have to rush home to swap tapes” recalled her son Michael. By the time she passed away in 2012, Marion had amassed about 71,000 tapes - the only comprehensive collection preserving this period in television media history. Now, the Internet Archive is digitizing her incredible work to make it publicly available. Marion's vision of universal access to knowledge will finally be realized, thanks to her tireless effort of secretly recording everything for thirty years. #foundmedia #internetarchive #internethistory

"Secretly?" - To clarify: Her family and friends knew about the recordings, but she kept them private due to past government surveillance of her political activism. This caution likely stemmed from her and her first husband's attempted defect to Cuba. As a new RU-vidr, I aim for accuracy and will be more careful with potentially ambiguous statements in the future. Thank you for helping me improve my content. -- There is much more to Marion and her story! Check out the great documentary about her life titled *_Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project._* dir. Matt Wolf, where most of this footage is from. I'm unable to link in a Short but her collection (thus far) can be found if you Google "Internet Archive Marion Stokes Collection."

@@mikehunt1528 contrary to popular belief, the internet actually is not forever, there’s a new acceleration in “link rot” meaning that many sites, videos, imagines are dead links. Most wikipedia pages have dead links all over their sources. The archive is the only thing rn helping preserve the information these links originally had. Look into the “digital dark age” theory. @@2009samiy Nice try. God used many ways to get his humans to depend upon Him and to include Him in their lives. He knew beforehand that the law wouldn’t work. He is all-knowing, ever-present and all-powerful. It was always in His plan to become flesh (and as flesh He was subject to all the complications, rules and indignities of it) so that He could be born, live, teach and then die and rise again to bring those who want to be in communion with Him, life everlasting. It’s quite simple. John 3:16 If we choose to accept His free gift of salvation, we get to be with Him forever. No person on earth knows what total separation from our Creator is like. People talk about it like it’s going to be a permanent party where all the most fun people will be. Make no mistake. If you choose to ignore Him, you will find yourself in the most desolate place imaginable with nobody to comfort you. Read your Bible prayerfully . Ask the only Living God into your life. Pray for wisdom and strength. You won’t be sorry!!

That’s the absolute truth. We would all have a different idea of the US Revolutionary War if Ben Franklin’s (+90%) monopoly on printing presses and newspapers wasn’t what we base US history on. We only read his history, where the Boston Tea Party *was not* a bid to try start a War with Native Communities that had Peace Treaties with the British. Nor, do we read & see the pictures in Franklin’s post-war newspapers, where Washington, Jefferson, himself, and others are wearing necklaces made from the Ears or Noses of the Women & Children they personally & intentionally massacred. Or, Gen.Custar’s orders being to intentionally target and massacre the Indigenous Women & Children (“The Savages will die off when there are no whores to have their children”).

You are corrupted, because you listen to and believe corrupted sources like the quran, and hinduism. Jesus Christ is the way the truth and the life, nobody comes to God the Father except through him. I tell you the truth, you must be born again. Unless you repent and turn from your wicked and evil beliefs and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your savior, you will perish. Those who reject this message are condemned. Pray about it, humble yourself, don't kick back at the Holy Spirit but let him convict you of your sin, he will bring you to Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and make you born again and a new creature and write your name in The Book of Life

Very few shows are recorded over. The original tapes are kept as masters for marketing & copyright purposes. Without reruns, television channels wouldn't have anything to air outside of prime time, which means no advertising, which means no income. With the astronomical costs of producing any show for TV, the cost to store the film is not that great. Also, a huge majority of shows were shot on film. Magnetic tapes weren't used due to their poor quality. So there's no way to "record over" film. It's mostly live broadcasts from the late 60s until the early 2000s that would have been saved on magnetic reel tapes.
@k-ozdragon

Interestingly enough, this did happen to the Apollo moon landings. The video sent back was a television broadcast, which was sent to only one or two news channels live as it happened. Apparently the original recordings of the were recorded over. The news agencies believed NASA had recorded everything. So the only video we have was from an amateur photographer working at the studio who filmed the TV monitors of the broadcast. It sounds unbelievable, but it true. This woman was outright insane! It’s so fascinating that someone’s insane fixation may be something that will be extremely useful and insightful for decades (and possibly centuries) to come. It’s not all the time that an insane fixation will help the masses, but when it does, it’s a beautiful thing. I genuinely appreciate this woman’s tenacity. ❤
