I adore Gyokuyou, but I agrer, Lihua started getting more development with Maomao that I wish we could see more of. That scene where Maomao is collapsed from exaustion and Lihua sits beside her and starts carassing her like she was her daughter still tugs at my heart, specially since Lihua had just lost her baby son. 😢

Let's be honest, at this point Maomao has been effectively hired, adopted and ensistered to all but the newest concubine, add the trust of the emporer and love of jinshi and she's effectively the most understatedly powerful person in the palace... And it's all adorable to see.

The thing that continues to get me about this whole situation is that nothing in the original summons seemed to explain WHAT Maomao was actually expected to be teaching these women (Jinshi sure didn't seem to know) - only that she was being called on to "teach the new Courtesan". She just seems to have made the assumption that this was the intended lesson plan and then no one contradicted her.

I think the blushing is during the chibi section (0:54) where her face is like the same colour as lihua's you can use gyokuyou's as comparison 👍

Without question this is my favorite scene in this entire anime. Seeing Lishu passing out over and over again had me replaying this scene several times during the episode. I think the Emperor had a few interesting nights after this went down.

@@StrangerForever85 It is VERY much like the gag in Azumanga Daioh (complete with “wow, this is educational”), and both rely on leaving the contents hinted at. It suggests material filthier than anything you could imagine, where explicitly showing something would make whatever you come up with feel mundane by comparison - the old “noodle incident” principle, as outlined by Watterson. Come to think of it, I’ve long heard writing comedy and writing horror have a lot in common, so maybe this is a counterpart to “keep the monster shrouded in mystery to amplify fear”.

Given the fakt he was plain traumatised at what happened to his mother and got a very clear demonstration to why tpuching anyone to young, it is not even really a moral conviction in his favor, also his one true love adopted that kid and probably would have castrated him for thinking about it, would trauma not plain prevent it from the start

It's possible that the Emperor is protective of her because of that connection, but also just because his preference is for mature women. IIRC there's also some comments made about how he found his fathers preference for "younger courtesans" distasteful in no small part because of what happened to his own mother.

Considering that Maomao isn’t serving Gyokyou anymore and does not have an official channel to contact her she wouldn’t really be able to prove this fact to begin with. Not that she’d ever choose to anyway, since doing so would only draw attention to herself and Maomao only does that as an unintended consequence of her actions rather than deliberately

Imagine if Jinshi and Mao Mao get together and it's the wedding night. People are worried about Mao Mao because Jinshi is very highly trained. And next morning Mao Mao is totally normal and Jinshi is struggling to walk after being shown all her tricks she learned from the her foster mothers/sisters 🤣

I love what the animators did with Louran. It's the same thing they did back in the first core for another character that did the same thing she is. It's really subtle which is hard to do in animation. That was hard to write without spoilers

It always strikes me that the oldest of these four concubines, Lihua, is only in her early 20s - several years younger than the Three Princesses, who taught Maomao all this. Pairin might’ve been learning the secret arts before Gyokuyou could WALK.
