It is clear from the General's use of the English language, for e.g. "the chips are down", the "nick names" for each other etc, shows how deep the old British influence goes in the Indian Armed forces and probably still does. Britain has moved on and the English used here and in the manner spoken would be considered old English. It is just an observation, on my part. Dear Nitin, Thanks for bringing Gen Kalkat on this platform , honestly I was aware of all this because of my back ground but for the benefit of your viewers - some thing I must add on . Accord should not have been signed at all , we should have achieved the entire thing diplomatically . If at all military coercion was required , we should have been well prepared . Indian Army was placed in alien territory without any warning to correct diplomatic failures . Rajiv Gandhi was misled by his advisors who knew nothing about the exact ground situation , he himself was clueless on military matters .Army had so many casualties for nothing . There was a question in every unit - for what purpose we have come to Sri Lanka . Big lesson is - please do not have a Prime Minister or Defense Minister who are clue less about matter military . COAS should have asked for time or he should have refused this order as Sam did in 1971 , though both the circumstances were absolutely different. Unfortunately in India we have bureaucrats who do not have any expertise on military matters and contribute to disasters of this nature . Now , I come to upside , Sri Lankan experience came very handy to Indian Army because lessons were applied in Kashmir valley .

Launching IPKF has resulted from a total misunderstanding between Indian govt strategists , political leadership which messed up the entire episode with miscommunication, political egos and immaturity . LTTE is the weapon made by India , losing control on the weapon itself is a blunder on the first step. Launching military without a clear strategy is another blunder . May be the current government follow a more safer approach .. put the indian boots on afghan soil clandestinely and keep denying any presence. Establishing plausible deniability on the first leg would save the face on the event of any unfavourable situations but gives the credit like Bangladesh if it turns out to be victorious .

I think the lesson learned was to train the Indian army to be professional, what I heard that IPKF was so unprofessional, they were looting and raping Tamil civilians and the Tamil people wanted them out of their sight...they were pleading to the central government of Sri Lanka for assistance.

Indian airforce literally dropped supplies to LTTE because they were almost about to be wiped out. This is recorded HISTORY. Operation Vadamaracchi (26th May- 4th June) was the SL Operation that halted right before capturing Prabhakaran. This is all documented HISTORY.

No matter how much India cooperates with the Sri Lankan government, the final decision rests with the Sinhalese. Any time the Sinhalese reject India, India's security and economy will collapse. The Sinhalese, a small nation, have the ability to control any action taken by India in the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka's neutrality has completely controlled the imbalance of power in the Indian Ocean due to India joining the US to control Chinese power. The Sinhalese declared the Indian Ocean as a peace zone 60 years ago and declared that any country in the world would provide services in the ports of Sri Lanka to trade and warships. India and any country in the world should follow this decision whether they like it or not.

Thanks Gen .i could hear you after a long years . in deed it was blunder from our side for changing our stand . we went in for supporting the suppressed Tamils and end up in a mess by virtue of poor foresight by the planners and great Indian advisers . Also Premadasa knows very well that he cannot take on mighty indian army and in particular Tamil population would have gone for supporting Indian army full heartedly to fight SLA. Even LTTE could have left with no option but to stand by India in fighting against SLA .
