I've had more success using non conducting bull dog clips , which really clamp the tape into place .

What an absolute waste of time. If you can't fix it don't keep it on RU-vid and giving others false hopes of fixing this issue.

While I would attempt to explain the meaning of the word attempt it is obvious in this instance that doing so would be an attempt at futility.

I’ve found the attachment to the glass is often the point of failure, I would love to be able to fix it in those situations, I need to find some of that tape !

Seller shop5592507 on ali was the one that arrived. Took 3 attempts to get it lol. Also just found a lot of cheaper bottles of removal solvent. Where were they when I was first looking.....

I can't see how this is any different to running a bare copper wire across all those contacts, therefore shorting them all out in one go ... so I'm intrigued to know how the tape is any different, especially if its fully pregnated with conducting particles ... in other words how does it separate (insulate) its conducting properties from each connection of the ribbon cable?
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 2 года назад
There's enough particles suspended in the glue to supposedly make a connection but spread far enough apart (at microscopic level) so as not to touch each other and bridge across the contacts.

@@JonnyFix Hello, I've a similar issue with a cheap Temp-Hygro meter bought several years ago. The LCDs (there're 2 of them, one for temp, the other for hygro) shows nothing now, I thought it was the battery but it's not, looks like LCD contacts to PCB are broken. I think it is a Zebra connector from PCB to the glass of the LCD. I've disassembled the thing and, when I press hard with my fingers, some digits come back to life, sometimes not...And when they come back, they show up clearly (=> not a battery issue). By pushing a bit too hard, a zebra connector disconnected completely. Also, the PCB is not perfectly flat and level, it ripples a bit... When I look closely to the Zebra connector, parts corresponding to contacts look more black than other parts (some thin layer made of some glue, or, I don't know what...) If I use my DMM in continuity mode, there's no short between the black parts (supposed to be the contact part, and matching locations on the PCB) and the opposite side of the connector as if some insulating layer prevented any contact... Is the Anisotropic conductive adhesive you use in this video suitable for such a repair ? Do I have to clean the old one first ? If yes, how ? Alcool ?
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix Год назад
@@gloubiboulgazeblob No you can't use the tape in place of a zebra strip. Gently clean the glass, pcb contacts and each side of the zebra strip with alcohol. The ripple in the board, depending how bad, could be your biggest problem. The strip will compress a little to form to the shape if not severe. If the board is warped a lot, maybe caused by pressure on it given how it sits in the case over time, you might be able to straighten it with heat as they tend to soften up over 300deg C. Of course be careful not to desolder parts in the process and use gentle pressure you're not looking for a fast result and you might need to go slightly past straight to cause it to be straight when it cools. You might just need a new zebra strip but you could try putting it in upside down and/or rotating it end to end so that it sits differently to how it has been. Also depending on the frame that holds the lcd you could put a strip of thin cardboard between the glass and the frame so when the frame is tightened down it pushes just a little bit more to make the connection.
@gloubiboulgazeblob
@gloubiboulgazeblob Год назад
@@JonnyFix I see. Indeed, the ripple in the PCB is the biggest problem, that's in fact the root cause of the problem ! (bad quality PCB, too thin for the application). There're already spacers to level the LCD glass. Given my experience in that domain and the state of the PCB, it has 99% chances to be a fail...The best to be done is to make a new PCB and take all parts (not much though) and put them on the new PCB. Anyway, thank you for your advices !

Hi Johnny Fix - great comprehensive video on the repair...very thorough. If I were to send you a module...would you repair for a fee? It's NOS but I dare-say dry solder joints / ribbon cable have caused the LCD sadness. Any help appreciated!

unfortunately the tape is often more expensive than the device, and the shelf life is ridicule (1 year or less I guess)

if you had a few spare days you could replace the flex with individually-soldered connections in case you REALLY needed this fixed... technically possible, quite unpractical

I saw on a web (on a forum) someone trying to do that, and failing, and it wasn't even on glass

wonder if this would work on a tv... i have a 40 inch tv that the screen fell out when i removed the front bezel to get to the leds.. it ripped the flex off the little circuit board attached to screen so now have a black line down the middle of the screen.. i found the tv so didn't cost me nothing.. didn't buy any new led strips for it.. i just put in some older leds out of a broken screen tv that i saved the lights.. but i still like the old ccfl backlighted tvs and i have many of them all still work or are easily fixable when they die.. like my old LG 32lx2r from 2005.. died many times but always been able to repair it

I have an old micronta digital multimeter that had the same sort of nasty problem. Lucky for me there was plenty of pcb space with no components near the lcd. So i drilled two small holes, one before the start of the flex and at the end of the flex. I made a thick metal bar with a rubbery strip glued to the underside of the bar. Then put the screws through the pcb and bar and tighten them. It worked but it was rather nasty lol, and it's lasted a loooooong time lol. I really really hate the way the manufacturer made the connections. I reccomend that you run away from that ha ha :-D
