FUD motors Booze cruise drives like a Drunken sailor and cannot operate ANYWHERE, any Time of Day or Night, in ANY Weather. * is ONLY hand free on PRE Mapped Highway . NOT 99% of Roads. Booze cruise EGO does NOT have much CONFIDENCE in anything it does. it Cannot handle Chuck Cook style UNPROTECTED left turns.

As a pilot, the interaction between the assistant systems in the driver is not just horrific. It’s actually scary. In an aircraft, there is no question whether auto pilot is in control, or if the pilot is in command. Audio feedback of system state is critical !!
@DirtyTesla
@DirtyTesla Год назад
It's the lack of audible warnings that was the worst imo. If someone used it enough they'd get used to it, but it should all be insanely obvious, especially to a nerd like me that cares about all these details.
@dornierGP
@dornierGP Год назад
No doubt, you need a master warning light and sound. In the Model 3 the screen displays a large red steering wheel along with an audible. As a side note, I don't think the little autopilot "On" symbol is effective in the Model 3. In an aircraft you have a clear indication that the autopilot is "On", but in my Model 3 I have to look for the tiny symbol at the top left of the screen to verify if it's On. We need better Driving Mode Annunciations in these cars. In either case, great video pointing out the differences between Tesla and Ford's Blue Cruise.
@timwildauer5063
@timwildauer5063 Год назад
This is mostly fixed today, but it’s still very easy for pilots to think the autopilot is engaged, or other features like the auto throttle, when they’re not actually engaged. There are hyper specific scenarios where commercial airplanes won’t tell you those systems are either overridden or disengaged that have caused dozens of accidents. So no, it’s not always true that there’s no question whether the pilot is in command.

While FSD Beta is better, when I was using the official release before signing up for the Beta program I was frightened by how easy it was to unintentionally deactivate self driving while trying to satisfy the nag. It wasn't always obvious and on a curve it was especially dangerous.

@matt4756

@@shableep There are actually several chimes and visual indicators on the gauge cluster. When it goes into hands on mode (still steering itself, hands on wheel required) there is just a visual indicator. When it cancels, it makes a simple "bing!" sound. When it wants you to resume control immediately, the system repeatedly plays "bing bing bing" sounds until you take over control. The version of BlueCruise he was using did not have the new 1.2 features such as automatic lane changes, in lane repositioning, and predictive speed assist for handling curves. So when he engages the turn signal, BlueCruise turns off momentarily so he can complete the lane change manually. It automatically reengages once the vehicle is in the new lane for a few seconds. I believe that BlueCruise is actually ahead of Tesla just because it is hands free. Got a Mach-E over a Tesla mostly for this reason alone.

I took delivery of my Model Y LR about 3 weeks ago and it is my first EV. I have put about 2400 miles on the usual summer trips on it and I have the basic Autopilot and I have the V. 4 hardware. I will say that this is easiest car that I have ever owned (I am over 50 years old) so far to live with, but I have a few gripes with the basic AP. If I have the AP engaged and it is doing lane centering then when I do a lane change why do I have to apply force to the steering wheel for it to disengage. In my opinion if I activate the turn signal with the lane centering active then it should disengage lane centering and allow me to do the lane change and once the car is centered then put it back to lane centering mode. I think that it is too slow to respond to traffic that is moving slower in my lane, such as a car or truck the moves into my lane and has the car has to slow down. Also it is to slow to speed up once cars or trucks that are in front of me get out of my way.

Great video, as always. My wife has a MY and I have a Lightning so I get to drive both regularly. There are quirks to Bluecruise and a learning curve that is tougher than autopilot.... and I think the comparison is more appropriate with autopilot and not FSD. After the initial learning curve though, BC is nice to have on the highway. There are places autopilot struggles and there are places BC struggles. The difference, as you pointed out, is that when Tesla struggles, YOU KNOW ABOUT IT. BC isn't as in-your-face as it should be when it gives up. There are indicators, but you have to look for them. The one thing I was surprised you didn't notice (or maybe just didn't mention) is that BC ping-pongs a bit in the lane and it also hugs the right side of the lane more than I would like. All that being said, not having the nag is awesome. Not really autonomous driving-related comment: The Lightning is super comfy and roomy. This is my holdover until my number for the Cybertruck comes up which will likely be 3-4 years. If you are ever in Vegas and what to give BC again, just say the word. ;-)

Mobileye has several hour long deep dives on all of that on their RU-vid channel. They actually have a huge “fleet” and will likely be the main competitor to Tesla in this space. I mean, I'll start out with 🤮in regards to their software interface, aka GUI. The 3D aspects of some of the controls and buttons needs to go, there is zero need to have shadows around them as it just creates unnecessary distance between interface items. Examples: * Getting into and out of far right lanes which are for parking only till 3PM at which time they are not allowed for parling but only as extra drive lanes during drive time hours. * Getting into bus lanes, not to complete a turn, but thinking it's a normal drive lane * Getting into turn only lanes thinking they are straight lanes. * Getting into inappropriate roundabout lanes that don't align with directions or visualation.

A couple of things. One, the version of BlueCruise that you were testing doesn't do assisted lane changes. The new version (1.2) should be rolling out soon. We did a video testing it on a 2023 Mach-E and it also has a couple of other new features. Two, the no audible warning is because it is still steering for you. If you don't respond to the visual prompt to put your hands on for those sections, then it will sound a repeated warning. P.S. Happy birthday! (Your Twitter profile said it was your birthday.)

@@DirtyTesla It is pretty annoying that it can be hard to tell what version of BlueCruise (or other software) is on the Mach-E or Lightning. But as far as I know, the only Ford vehicles with BlueCruise 1.2 are the 2023 Mach-Es. It is supposed to be an OTA for the Lightning and other Mach-Es later this year. If you do try it again, one way to tell if it has lane change assist is looking at the truck icon in the display. If it can do a lane change, it will have a left and right arrow icon surrounding the truck. On the Mach-E, it looks like a < and > sign. If you have the time, you should see if Ford can loan you a 23 Mach-E with BlueCruise 1.2.

I owned a Tesla and I also played with Nissan and Toyota's lane keeping. They just don't make any chime when the lane keeping is active - just like the blue cruise, it will give up at random time, and magically snap you back at the lane using minimal force. I can feel a tiny tweeny force on the steering wheel when it's on (definitely not as snap as Tesla). It's so confusing who is controlling the car - the car or me. I guess they do it deliberately to encourage driver to keep hands on wheel and actively driving. But if Ford is advertising hands free yet doesn't give chime while leaving autopilot mode, that's very alarming

If it does not turn off on a slight road turn. Which is the issue, the fact it can just turn off without clearly conveying it did. Even with a need to have a hand on the wheel, Tesla's AP has been a massive help in reducing fatigue on long trips and I was able to keep the system running for basically the entire way with zero incidents what so ever, even once avoiding me an accident from a truck that had cut in my lane with no turn signal from a blind spot. Blue cruise could be a great strain reducer but the need to constantly monitor the system for surprise disengagements makes it not worth it IMO. Hopefully they realize this bad design decision and come back to it because its honestly criminal no regulation agency has come on their ass for this already, when they have been doing so for AP (and as they should, any ADAS should be made robust and safe)

The hyundia ioniq 5 has a similar system (not handsfree) for lane keeping that will disengage occasionally without any chimes or warning. Maybe be the same underlying system.

A big difference is that one is referred to as a "driver assist" and doesn't over promise, the other is irresponsibly named "Full Self Driving" and totally over promises. Those comments calling Blue Cruise dangerous and calling it to be banned are thinking blue cruise is something that it is not. The reason there is no resistance on the steering wheel when Blue Cruise is on and changing lane is almost certainly because the indicator is on, so it is expecting the driver to be changing lane. Try changing lanes without the indicator and I would guess the steering wheel would have resistance, that is the correct behaviour. To properly evaluate Blue Cruise it has to be reviewed it as a "driver assist" and not "full self driving".

@@DirtyTesla A few more questions about BlueCruise; Can you use the adaptive cruise control (not BlueCruise) outside of highways? If the BlueCruise system disengages and tells you to take control, if you don't take over, will it just come to a stop like Tesla Autopilot would? What if you press the accelerator?

You can use ACC outside of highways. If you don't listen to the warnings, it will eventually pulse the brakes to get your attention and then I believe it either slows to a stop or 5mph without hazard lights :S

It seems to be available in Europe but only UK, I still think auto pilot is better, at least it can drive quite well on the highway even when it curves, I know its not hand free but an arm in the window and the hand on the wheel and it doesn't complain

Sometimes I wish Tesla would ignore the speed limit signs ... that is now with FSDbeta on highways because it is absurdly changing speeds to passing / overhead streets or the nav database vs the speed limit signs. The Tesla system currently is awful for speed limit processing ... it use to work excellent with regular AutoPilot on highways.
