This is a very boring 20 minute long video. I suggest you don't watch it unless you need to know how to assemble a ford focus bonnet lock barrel assembly
at 15:40, you don't just put the spring on the plastic bit. You have to lodge one of the prongs at one end of the spring against the protruding bit of plastic and then using a screwdriver push the spring from the other prong over. So that when you turn the key in the barrel it will centre itself automatically.
Yep. Thanks for the video though... Very informative and saved me a lot of swearing. I didnt go all the way rebuilding the lock.. I swapped my entire mechanism to housing..
I had a hard time to put the spring in the back together. Came back here to write how it's done. Well you got it right. I should have read the comments before I start working on it.
Great video, and 10 years later I'm now watching it. Thanks for doing this, I'm now on my 3rd bonnet lock but this time I've got the alloy one, no more plastic. Will take note on 15:40 👍
I also need my third on my ST. What a pile of crap that design is. I would be quite happy with a lever inside the car. Never had someone try to break into my engine bay lol!
Cannot thank you enough me ol mate. I just got me new assembly turn up an I could not make head nor tail if it all!!! But a search on RU-vid led me to your video and I honestly can now say I did it! All thanks to you
why would someone post boring don't watch unless you need to assemble a ford focus bonnet lock I don't get it I did need to assemble a bonnet and did it while watching the vid so saved me loads of time trying to work out how to do it thank you dave bee
Thanks, that vid just simplified my life. Just to add, my kit came with numbers 1 to 5, but only 11 and 15 for the other side with letters B, C and D, but it didn’t take long to work out that these would be 12, 13 and 14.
Awesome thanks so much for this wouldn't have managed to replace my lock without this video. My keys are old and different amounts of wear so ended up removing one tumbler and filing the others so that they were flush with the barrel.
Thanks for this. Couldn't find any mechanics keen on building the cylinder. Convinced one guy that I'll do the cylinder build if he could do everything else. Thankfully he agreed and managed to get it all sorted. I did manage to drop the springs a few times but got there in the end. This tutorial was great. Thanks again.
Thank you so much ! the only vidéo which explain How To feet the barrel To your key. I thought I could never do it ! un grand merci ! la seule vidéo qui explique comment adapter un barillet à sa sa clé. Aucune notice trouvable sur le net. Merci Ford ! Bande d'enfoirés !
What an amazing tutorial. I was quoted £300 by a Ford garage (yes, that is not a typo!) to get my bonnet working again, and I would have ended up with a 2 x key car! Of course, if Ford had have designed a proper bonnet release in the first place, you know, like a lever in the cabin (!), it would have saved us all alot of grief...
I just realised how old this video is, but your an absolute star my sons bonnet didn't open after I put a different style grille in for him, even though I was extremely careful with the lock, but the grille didn't give up easily and I didn't check before I closed the bonnet doh😣....... Fishing forceps pulled the rubber boot off, pushed forceps into plastic pushed lock with the key and 20 seconds after pulling the rubber boot off, I was in....... Thanks again 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Jesus lads yous are legends, quoted £80 before labour or vat etc, fixed it this afternoon fur £3.99 with a part bought from e bay. very short of money atm so I'm very grateful indeed to all you guys that take time out to help other people, I'm sendin good karma your way, thanks again :)
New Bowden and lock assembly £5 from local scrap yard. (Including a new dipstick.) an hour watching and learning and repairing. You are awesome sir! £400 saved as quoted by main dealer. Thank you!
No instructions came with the purchase of the new unit, so I had a go at trying to figure it out myself as I'm pretty logically minded. Got about half of it correct, but resigned myself to having to take it it in to a garage. This video explained all the gaps in my guessing, and I will crack on again when I get home! Thanks!
Bought this item last week and thought great deal, then I found that the lock needs building. No one seems interested, but now I've found this I will try it myself. YES boring until you need to do this 10/10 for what I need thanks
Excellent video. Well done. Just built a barrel up thanks to your help. I took note of the comments and did the doodle wrap of the spring to get the better return. Couldn't have done it without this video.
I have just fitted a complete assembly after looking at the first 55 seconds of your video, showing how to remove the white cross part by simply pulling it. Actually, I'm glad I watched your excellent video, because I suspect, had I tried to do what you did with the lock rebuild, I'd either have lost some springs, thrown it all out of the window or lost the will to live or all three. Well done with your video and once again, I'm glad I bought the complete item. Thanks.
Iv recently bought a ford focus and it had no bonnet release, when it came from ebay I was expecting not to build it. But thanks to you, iv managed to put things right. Thanks for uploading, id be lost without your knowledge.
This is really good stuff , it enabled me to build a NEW lock, it made the job possible and helped me around the potential pitfalls along the way, many thanks for the clear and precise instructions,it has inspired me to make a follow up as I have opened the bonnet of my focus WITHOUT DESTROYING the grille,I will post in a few days much obliged peter
Great video and so glad it is here. A couple of points to add to the video info: 1) I purchased FINIS 1343577 today and it only came with 8 springs too so this must be the standard Ford pack and you have the option of which 8 holes you use, instead of all 10. 2) In case you were wondering, the lock kit does come with the plastic cross clip that connects the lock mechanism to the latch, already fitted. Saves you buying a separate one if yours is broke. 3) In the video, the spring seems to be just placed on the black end piece with the two fingers either side of the black plastic post. Although this will provide some spring back, it will not be enough to return the lock to the centre position fully. Instead the spring must be placed on top of the black piece under tension. You do this as you fit the spring by placing the lower spring finger to the left of the plastic post and the top finger to the right of the post. If you have done this correctly then if the whole lock is carefully tipped upside down, the spring should not fall off. Hope this additional info helps.
Excellent video. Great instruction for a very tricky job - thank you. You have saved me £250, as my Ford dealer wanted £300. I had to destroy the plastic bonnet lock assembly completely, as my Focus Bowden Cable had snapped. I also had to use tin snips to cut out the grill. A new grill cost me £19 and a new Bowden Cable repair kit £32, both off Ebay. Thank you, once again.
Thanks for the excellent video, it saved me to buy a separate lock instead I could fix the lock to use the same key. Highly appreciate your efforts in sharing this video. Thank you.
Thanks!....Great video... Can't believe Ford don't put any instructions in the kit. The only recommendation I would make is to work out each key tumbler one at a time, then remove it and write the sequence down as you go. Once you know all the correct tumblers for each slot, build them in one go. That way you don't keep dropping the little springs. Thanks again for making this... save me trying to work it all out for myself.
Thank you for making this video. Must have saved me £200. Took me a few attempts to get the lock assembly into the barrel but once I got the bit about how to set the part so they engage correctly it fell in! Great work
Thanks for this. I just saved $400NZD by ordering the part from Amazon (cheaper than Ford NZ, who refused to give me the part number) and then a few hours slowly going through your video. I also found some ford manuals online that I correlated with your video. I think the spring assembly has to be crossed over the black peg (according to the ford manual). Other than that I highly commend your succinct, simple, well produced video that is saving unlucky Ford owners like myself money!
I'd like to add my thanks for this video, i wouldn't have a clue without it, who would know the tiny parts are numbered, let alone assemble it as Ford give no instruction or diagram, Great Video, a life saver
Absolutely brilliant just used it to repair my 56 plate focus Gordon Scicluna you're right about the spring and FYI all the kits only have 8 springs!! Thanks again for making this an easy fix!!!
Just carried this out and took not of the spring comments worked a treat and saved myself a fair few quid as well many many thanks even managed to complete the tumblers first time and took note of the order the tumbler numbers are as well in case this ever happens again in the future save myself some time putting them straight in instead of having to go through them 1 at a time.
HiMany many thanks for uploading this video. You have helped me a great deal. I managed to get my bonnet open without damaging the grill or anything else. The cable was completely sheered off so the whole locking mechanism was replaced. Of note, the plastic cross piece connection can be replaced, there is a direct replacement part on Ebay which prevents the locking mechanism from displacing, preventing the problem re occurring. It's a tamper proof mechanism that has never worked properly so I won't miss it. Thanks again anyway.
Hello,Thanks a lot for a great video much appreciated, saved me a lot of time. There is a small mistake at 15:40, when you fit the spring. The two ends of the spring need to overlap over the plastic bolt (so you put both ends at the one side of the plastic bolt, and then you force the second end - further from the bolt and pull it over the plastic bolt.) this will greatly improve precision of the recoil spring, and it will align the key perfectly - no loose key). Thanks again!
Great video : purchased a repair kit on Ebay , no instructions, and a great pile of brass bits amongst other things.Watched your video several times and saw how to re-build the lock.Had a few mishaps, which resulted in springs & brass bits everywhere - several times :-(Eventually as I re-built the barrel, I wrote the brass numbers on the barrel with an permanent pen, against where they went.I could then rebuild when I had another mishap !I did finish by using a fine piece of emery paper, with the key in the lock, just to take off any high spots on the brass bits. Thanks
I have got this exact problem, and this was brilliant. Well done you on an excellent video. Now all I have to do is get the bloody bonnet open first. Cheers.
the barrel on our focus knackered, so this vid has been a life saver ...well, a £150 saver (which is what Ford wanted to sort it!) Couple of things that might help others ...we bought the updated Kuga/C Max replacement kit, which is supposedly more robust & we didn't bother fitting the key pins/springs, which still works (although now ANY ford key will work) as it just wasn't worth the effort (& less things to wrong - as we think one of the pins seized on the previous barrel) ...& due to the cars value being so low, it doesn't really matter
Very useful video - thank you so much. Thought this would be a painful job but with the help of your video it turned out to be very straightforward. One thing I did differently, which made it a bit easier was that instead of trying to hold in all of the little plates and springs into the barrel at the same time while trying the key, I only tried one plate and spring at a time and recorded the result in a matrix on a sheet of paper. I numbered the slots in the barrel 1 to 8 along the vertical and wrote the plate numbers (1 to 5 and 11 to 15) along the top horizontal side. I put a tick in the relevant box (e.g. if plate 5 fits in slot 1 without sticking out, I put a tick in the 5th box on the top line) and an "X" otherwise. Then when each one had been tested, you could read off the "code" from the matrix/table.
Just had to do this. One little note, the spring will need to be positioned around the black plastic bit to keep the whole thing nice and tight when you turn the key. Other than that, it's a very good guide and saved me the time to having to work out the engineering behind it myself. Thanks mate.
Thanks for the video, it worked perfectly. My kit had 8 springs and no number 12s which I think it needed 2 but it wasn't an issue. My only problem was I could not get one of the small pins in at the end, it came unrolled. I will look for something else I can hammer in. EDIT - I hammered out the long pin from the old barrel and then snipped it to size once it was in place.
working towards completion. so far so good, thanks, I'd be nkrd without this vid. Love the way you do the quiet whistle thing, me too, people always take the mickey out of me. :-)
That was perfect was able to get my old barrel out of old unit and rebuilt will fit it tomorrow to my cmax and hope all goes well will then put in pins just in case I get a problem. Thanks
fantastic video mate, a real life saver. just one mistake, the spring needs to be crossed over the black plastic peg so its taught and under load, that is what gives the spring feeling when you turn the key left to right . if you don't cross the spring you don't get the return when you let go of the key! it would still work but you wouldn't get the sensation of the key self centring as you let go. overall excellent video I was really struggling. thanks
georgegleek you’re absolutely right! If the spring ends are not crossed on the black plastic piece pin, the spring feels kind of loose. After crossing all feels much more sturdy and the key returns to center position just like OEM lock
Very Nice video, I would like to add that mark the lock sides A and B start with side A insert key pin in the first hole without spring, to check push it back with your nail (Because you are not using spring) if it fits properly take it out and make a note on paper and than try another key pin in second hole for example Side A= 1-11-2-12 Side B 3-13-4-14 In this way you will not damage the springs or you will not lose them and you will not find it difficult to hold few and try another one,,,Once you get all right just put all springs in along with key pins togeather. Also once barrel is in cylinder (before pushing/strocking black plastic thing) put boths side locks in place and wrap your side locks with sello tape so that they will hold the barrel other wise it will slip out and you have to find spring and lock pins(happend with me twice) its a critical step..... you can remove sellotape afterwards before final assembly and thanks for the video highly appreciated.
