Do the leak down test, it will tell you if you if you have valve troubles or ring problems broken wrings or broken pistons. Anyway you will find it out if you take it apart. Good luck, you are one in million who would take on such task. I really like that you have the "determination" to do it yourself. Your jack makes all the difference in taking it apart. I am very surprised in you not having any oil on your face and elsewhere... does help too have a clean floor, its a guess whether its pistons, broken rings or burned valves its at least one or more of the three.

I remember I had a little engine light issue with my old F82 M4 after i had the Dinantronics and freeflow exhaust system installed (this was back in 2016). I brought the M4 at BMW and immediately the technician noticed that I had the Dinan piggyback tune and the exhaust. They denied to fix the problem but I was lucky coz Dinan matches BMW’s warranty. Dinan fixed the issue with no questions. I know you made a risk (just like you said) but it’s always a plus to get aftermarket tunes and gizmos from companies who will back you up when something happens. Good luck with your GT350 Dora. I know you can fix that coz your a PRO 😉.

Ford denied me to. I repaired everything nd kept the receipts. Then called lemon law nd got all my money back.

Well done! Nice vid. I Did a compression check on a 5.0 motor, # 4 low compression , 50 psi, put oil in the cylinder and compression test at 65 psi. All other cylinders 140 to 150 psi. The oil is used to seal the piston rings temporary, if its a piston ring issue with blow by and not a damaged valve. So cylinder 4 with the oil should have been over 100 psi, just 65 psi its probably going to be a valve. The best way to learn is to do what your doing!

Ford will be doing this a lot. They know they have had issues with this engine, tuned or not. They are going to try and find any reason not to cover the warranty. Good luck with the rebuild. I know you will do an amazing job.

Be careful and find the underlying cause of the problem.I rebuilt my first 350 chevy at 16 with help from dad.It had gotten hot.Ran great 2 weeks later getting off the highway the idiot light came on.I left it deiseling .Radiator was partially clogged and back then if the light came on it was too late.I learned a lesson to be very much a "perfectionist"which helped as an aircraft mechanic.Your cylinder with low compression is the farthest from the point where coolant enters the engine.Great to see young people into cars!

I admire your determination and positive attitude. I encourage you to follow through with this. There's a first time for everything. I'd just research methods and techniques for a competent rebuild and follow those procedures. If I can do it (and I can) you can do it. Proud of you for being willing.

Doing a compression check is different than you think . You find TDC of the test cylinder, with a compressor pump use a true compression check rig it will have a regulator and 2 gauges. Testing that way will tell you , rings , exhaust valve, or intake valve. Air escaping oil fill , ring piston. Air out exhaust, ex. Valve .air out intake intake valve . Great video

The tune wasnt the issue faulty oem engine parts thats the issue

I respect you alot for owning up on the tuning. I have been a heavy truck mechanic many years. I have dealt with customer’s that have ran power boxes on Cat engines and blew head gaskets and other damage.Yet they take off the power box before they bring it in for warranty. As soon as i hook up to the ecm and look at the engine parameters and send them to Cat there busted

measurements and tolerances are EVERYTHING. take your time, get it all on video, itll help if there is an issue. i do recomend having an experienced engine person around. i built and will build older ford big blocks, i still find i love the FE and 429/460 engines

I’m starting to see a lot of voodoo engines starting to go bad on RU-vid. If you know “itsjusta6”s channel he also is having the same issue with cylinder 8. But I hope the best of luck to getting her fixed!!

Sounds like my Hellcat, they like when you buy an expensive car but hate to do warranty work on it

#1 thing you should do is a ceramic coating on the top of the piston. Helps keep the heat transferring into the piston. Cost isn't bad at all should be like $30-$45 a piston but the benefit is amazing. #2 thing is looking into having whatever pistons you use hard anodize, it will add some strength to the piston. You hard anodize first then have the tops of pistons ceramic coated.

also. perform a wet compression test on number 8. Add a teaspoon of engine oil to the cylinder and crank it over. If the reading goes higher which it looks like it will, then your piston rings failed. Dunno what state you live in but Cali has a machine shop that specializes in Ford modular engines. The can machine out the plasma sleeves in those cylinders and install sleeves of your choice. also remember the GT 350 has forged internals. When you have any vehicle with Forged internals letting the car warm up before hammering down on it should be a habit when you drive it. also. if you put an after market oil catch on it and you daily drive it my suggestion is to ditch it. Oil catches are for vehicles that operate at high RPM's for a long amount of time. A little oil in your cylinders can help keep your piston rings from wearing. But an oil catch at low revs actually allows very little to enter the cylinder. Again any questions I am a Ford Gas Engine tech, message me.

These 5.2 flat plane ford motors don't have a good history so far. Way too many going before 10k miles and Ford giving the run around.

Pull piston 4 and 8, hone the cylinders and replace the pistons. That would be the route I take.

Video showed up in recommendations, now I'm subbing just to see the rebuild! Sorry girl, I feel for you on this one; you're FAR from alone on this problem. I've been running HPDE track events for 8 years and know a lot of folks personally that run 350's (R and non-R) and many of them have had engine issues. Oil starvation and lack of proper cooling on the early non-R cars are the usual culprits. The worst was one of our driving instructors who got a new R with 0.0 miles (so no prior test drives and abuse) and had the motor blow at 400 miles! It blew on the highway while he was cruising in 6th! He was putting road miles on the engine to break it in before taking it on track, never revved it out, and it just popped. It's really shameful the problems they've had with these voodoo engines. I love Ford cars but I'm tired of defending their makers this last decade. As for whether your tune caused the damage or not....maybe. It's hard to know, but if the tune leaned it out too much the increased cylinder temps certainly could have caused problems; but factory tune cars are popping so it's hard to say for sure. Anyway, props for having the courage to take on doing the rebuild! If the cylinders aren't damaged then it SHOULD be relatively straightforward. If it's in the budget, I'd definitely go with stronger forged pistons/rods for "cheap" insurance. Definitely do oil separators on both sides to keep the blow-by oil out of the intake. I'm sure there are other things voodoo builders have found that need addressing so I'd research and do those as well. In other words, build it back the way ford SHOULD have built it to begin with :) Can't wait to see the rebuild process.

The oil ring groves dont have enough drain back holes for the oil to be removed like should causing oil consumption in the cylinder same with the ls motors

Hi. I have not been following lately and was sad to hear of the engine problems with your Shelby, but your analysis and teardown videos were very well done. The compression test revealed a lot from the start. That was very interesting! Mine has been running well, fortunately. The only mod I made, as you did, was the installation of the Ford Performance Oil/Air Separator to the right bank. I did the same to the Boss. My Shelby has 1,335 miles now and I have been pushing it around a little since the first 1,000 miles and oil change, but I have not taken it to the track yet. Time will tell. If your Shelby doesn't come back, you seem to have a lot of other nice toys. :) I am a subscriber now. Best wishes. Keep publishing!

I've done a few DIY engine rebuilds & personally I'd not try and rebuild an engine like this one at home - this is a very special engine, and will require high precision with very fine tolerances - you need specialist skills and equipment, better to pull it and strip it down yourself, then take it all to a professional engine rebuilder to machine and re-assemble to spec, they can judge best what is needed to overcome any bore damage etc, if it's going to get away with just a hone or it needs more serious machining and moving up to larger pistons & rings. I guess you can take the other approach and say it's worth a go, and if it doesn't work out you aren't really any worse off except whatever the parts you have put into it cost you & the time. Anyway best of luck!

Ford has to prove that any modifications made caused the damage and if the can’t they’ll have to warranty your engine, push the issue.

Damn, makes me glad I bought a Corvette instead of a GT350 hearing about all these engine failures and oil consumption lately.

Every warranty issue I've had with vehicles have been denied for bullshit reasons. My son bought a car from CarMax in 2015 with an extended warranty. The car started running like crap, we brought it to Mazda, they contacted CarMax and holy shit they authorized all the work the car needed under warranty. Then the car was T-boned six months later and totaled. It is great you are willing do this to your car. What would get me is all the computers and electronics that if not done perfectly will never allow the car to run.

I think it’s crazy that this type of car can’t handle a tune and cold air, regardless if it’s OEM or the actual tune that did it. I understand there’s risk with everything, but after paying $50k for a car only to do simple mods and then have to replace pistons out of pocket! It will take a motor tech and engine machine shop to fix Ford engineer design

Dont assume at this time your engine needs to be disassembled. That low compression cylinder could be due to a valve stuck open in the valve guide. Take the valve cover off of that side and crank the engine over and make sure both valves are opening and closing to determine of you have a sticking valve guide. If the two valves are opening and closong all the way, then remove your head and inspect your valve faces, and if those are good then disassemble your engine. My 89 cadillac with the 307 V8 recently had low compression on cylinder number 5. I took the valve cover off that engine and guess what? The exhuast valve wasnt completely closing and by turning the valve and oiling it and pushing it up and down it freed. Now this car aet up for 3 years, but the sae thing can happen in any engine. I hope you read this because I admire your ability and determination. I am a 63 years of age mechanic and machinist

Ford dealership technician here. Just to let you know, if your vehicle is tuned IDS will be able to track this even if it is returned to stock when you bring it in. If you need any instruction on how to remove the engine, let me know. I have replaced an engine assembly before on a 2017 Mustang GT. I don't imagine a Shelby is that much different. It can be removed from the top.

One thing to take notice on your engines, the cylinders near the firewall tend to hold the heat. This heat build up causes these problems. The causes are usually the exhaust system or bad water jacket in the heads. In the high RPM racing, you will need to find a better way to run the headers to reduce heat buildup in the back cylinders.

Could always get the engine resleeves and new pistons. Probably the cheapest

I am happy to see you decided to take on the project... KUDOS for keeping the original engine with the car too. Misfiring or detonation? Either one could cause your piston damage, either will also cause rod bearing damage if the plugs are firing with the piston mid ascent. What I see is a hot spot on the edge of a piston causing some detonation. What were your engine temps and how long/hard with what fuel with how much timing when you experienced problems? May not have been enough fuel or enough octane for the timing. I can't wait to see what upgrades you decide to do to the engine? Better main and rod bolts studs? Coat the pistons? New Camshafts?

By law ford has to prove that your modifications damaged the engine. A cleaner looking intake is not justification. They would lose in court if you contested.

You have the compression tester now. Use the hose part with air compressor regulate at 30 psi and put the pistons at top dead center to see where is really leaking at. Intake, exhaust or crankcase

Cylinder 8 looked like it had a melted spot on the piston, upper right quadrant between value forging against cylinder wall. You'll see this when you pull the head. Also as a heads up, your buddy Chris (or yourself) could have put the piston at top dead center and moved the piston up and down to see if the cylinder is scored. You may end up having to bore or possible hone the cylinder to clear up the scratches is the piston was blown out. Hope for just having to hone, if its scored to badly you may have to bore to block .025 and go up on that cylinder. Good luck with this you're looking at a very labor intensive job.

You may want to look into the Magnuson Moss Act. It is law to protect consumer from being denied a warranty claim because of aftermarket parts. They can request it be returned to stock for diagnosis but they cannot deny your warranty claim. Plus they cannot prove that based on ignition cycles or cleanliness of your intake. You could just be sitting listening to your radio with the ignition on.

I asked a very experienced local tuner if I should get a GT350 a couple years ago and he said "absolutely not". He went on to say how the engines break in various ways and that there was a one at the local service center down the street with just 24 miles on the odo and a broken valve spring. BTW Jeff Ashton (another RU-vidr) had a broken GT350 engine at 6800 miles with no mods.

Label & bag all parts , loosen head bolts outside to inside , it,s ok to take your time , use silcon spray for assembly hoses & wire plugs .

Looks like "blow by" that sucks. Maybe an oil additive would help but it won't fix it.

FYI I have worked in dealers for 17 years. I have always been told they cannot refuse a warranty claim for modifications alone. They have to be able to prove that the modifications cause the damage. Having a clean intake pipe and suspecting or even knowing that you had an aftermarket intake pipe is not legally a reason they can deny your claim. The tuning is a different story haha

Well, that just means you are free to build the motor to whatever you want, as long as you have the money

My advice to you is mark everything when you disassemble the engine also take pictures of all the making bearings and crankshaft bearings and sense is you’re first time doing it get a repair manual for that engine, I hope this works to you good luck

Ford has one the worst warranty’s in the industry.

I think you should find bore-scope that can turn and see upside of the cylinder. It can be an issue with valves. Also with smoke lead down test, you can pin point the leak. You may not have to replace the engine.

Just a tip next time you do compression try to open the throttle butterfly all the way open so it gets proper air in the cylinder it will give you a better test result

You need to learn not to move the camera around so fast it makes it impossible to watch and slow down you talk too fast

I'm a new subscriber. That GT350 is clean. I like the black with blue racing stripes. You got this. It's cool seeing more women wrenching on their own cars and I mean that as genuinely as possible. Working on cars is a lot of fun to me. Not as fun as driving the car but it's a great thing to know and so satisfying driving around a car that you tore apart yourself and fixed whatever issues it may have had and putting it back together and it runs way better than before. :)

one thing everyone needs to keep in mind with modern cars and the ecu. they can see if it's been modified/flashed. even on motorcycles. I work as a motorcycle dealer tech and the diagnostic tools they give us for the ecu can see the stock tune not there and how long it's had a new one aka if it's been flashed back to stock..

it happened to the 4.6 32v grandparent of your engine that I have. the cylinder top is just junk because of the fuel injectors were not giving enough fuel. on the down side. a lot of people will over look it I had to put 80 pound injectors in and never had a issue on damaging the piston again even though I had to take out the pistons to replace the pistons. after I had every thing apart I ported and polished every thing. and made sure the rest was golden as well

Went through this with a used certified car that was tuned before I purchased it unknown to me at the time of sale. Motor blew 4k after I purchased it and the dealer denied my warranty! If this happens to you contact your states dealer services unit and start a case. Costed me 18k to replace my engine, took 2 months to get repaired and endless hours on the phone. It took 4 yrs for this to work through the system but I finally got all my money back! Never buying a vehicle from them again! Also, looking like it has been modified is not proof that it has been neither is key cycles. They are possible indicators but when you go to court they can not say that for certain anything was done to the vehicle from that. If you modified the car then you pay to play but if you did nothing wrong don't let them take advantage of you.

This is the reason I’ve been holding off on tuning my Raptor. Too many horror stories unfortunately. Shame

All Coyote engines have a weakness in the water pump impeller as they are a plastic impeller and from test bench evaluation they tend to promote bubbles in the eye of the pump. Coolant circulation is vital for any high performance engine and as such the quickest way to establish the performance of the pump is to run both the flow and return lines into a bucket of coolant with the engine idling at around 500 rpm. Once the system is bled then remove the flow line from the bucket and time the flow into a 1 litre container and it should take no more than 10 seconds to fill the container. If it takes longer then the pump is not up to scratch and will result in a harder to tune engine. The ideal flow is 10 litres per minute at 500rpm. Also do not put the recommended coolant back into the engine as any coolant that is water based is an invitation to future problems, as water converts to a gas and nucleates. The ideal fluid for an engines cooling system is a nano glycol and is available through a company called Evans waterless coolants. With the engine apart it is the ideal time to get rid of the mistake , water based coolant , and replace it with a lifetime coolant. We do modify the stock pumps with a stainless steel impeller that flows the correct rate but we are based in Australia.

It stinks to see so many of these motors failing.
