In this video I show you how to service the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) and rear differential on the Ford Edge and this procedure will also cover the Lincoln MKX which shares the same chassis. I recommend you do this drain and refill procedure every 30k miles especially on the PTU unit because of where its located it sees very high temps which degrades the oil very quick. Oil, fluid extractor, thread sealant, and hand pump were purchased from Amazon and I will provide a link to everything below.

thank you so much for this. i was just under my car today looking at how cramped that PTU was and had no idea how i was gonna service it. you made it clear and simple enough, thank you. i will be doing this when it warms up a little more

Our rear diff "drain plug' on the back side uses a 3/8" square drive to remove. But the Ford parts counter shows three plugs with small Torx heads #W700251-S437 that are not what you need. My mechanic didn't mess with them for fear of stripping the small Torx heads, and difficulty of access. An electric suction pump only removed about 500cc (18oz) which is what we put back in. We're not sure if the diff was underfilled from the factory. At 40,000 miles, it was dark green not black and didn't smell too bad. We did the PTU fluid at 38,000 miles which was darker in color.

Man, Changing the oil in this PTU looked easy compared to doing it in my MKZ. I had to use very long needle nose pliers as my fingers to get the little rubber hose in and out of the drain / fill hole. I got it done but it took like 2 hours to do it. Boy did it stink !!!. I managed to get an 8oz water bottle full. That was good enough for me. Got to do the rear diff next weekend. Enjoyed the video and thanks for doing it. Good job !

I wasn’t very surprised ford didn’t put drain plugs on either one but I was surprised on the edge sport they ran dual exhaust all the way back then Y”ed to the muffler 😑

The ford manual shows a drain on the front face of the rear diff, on later versions (Ford Kuga over here in Europe).

No humming or noise customer just wanted me to replace all fluid and glad I did because of how cooked that ptu fluid was. Bad design by ford once again and they don’t make it easy to service.

I am about to buy one with 100+K kilometers (60+k miles) what service should I do? Also, the differential shakes a little on initial acceleration, what could that be?

With 60k I would definitely do the PTU just because the oil in it just cooks as you saw in the video. It wouldn’t hurt to do your diff as well. I would also do the spark plugs if they haven’t been done already. As for the vibration does it do it while your turning? A lot of times it’s the electronic clutch in the diff that causes the vibration especially while accelerating and turning.

Been about 11 months since you posted this video….still have the edge? How’s she running? ….if you still have her how often are changing these fluids? I just acquired a 2012 Edge SEL and I’m pretty meticulous about these things so I’ll be tackling this pretty soon.

This is my buddy’s edge and yes he still has it. No issues at all still running perfect. I recommend doing these fluid every 30-40k miles.

Thank you...was able to finally drive the Ford Edge yesterday (had to register and insure it and just working alot lately) and it drives like a dream....want to keep it that way so I'll definitely be doing this in the near future....I love Ford, just need to have a few work arounds on a few items that's all. Plan on doing the diff fluid as well (might even modify a drain plug for that as well)
