I have this rig plus an Anderson 5th wheel hitch. 2015 F150 Ecoboost, 2,200lbs and 10.800lbs. Over 18,000 miles traveled, very easy and comfortable towing. Like all rigs you have to do your research before you buy. However the 2015 F-150's officially stated towing and payload numbers are, tows up to 12,200 pounds and haul up to 3300 pounds in the bed. Welcome to the future folks.

I had this exact same truck and camper and although it is true that the trailer is within the tow /payload capacity of the truck and can be towed safely, there should be some mention of caution if you plan on towing this rig on long trips. My experience towing this rig from Memphis TN to Grand Lake CO was that every time I went over an overpass or dip in the highway, the truck would bounce severely. Even after adding airbags and stiffer L/T tires the bouncing over less than smooth surfaces was just too much so I traded up to a 3/4 ton truck.

Buyer beware of these reported half ton tow able fifth wheel trailers. There are two parameters that must be met: tow capacity and payload capacity. I have seen very few dealers who will talk about payload capacity. They tell you that your truck is capable of towing something like 9600 lbs, or so, and you can tow this easily as it only weighs around 7000 lbs, or so. But you seriously need to also look at the payload capacity. This is written on the driver’s door pillar and is set for each individual truck as it comes off the line. Do not use brochure numbers. In my truck, the payload capacity was 1600 lbs. Then you have to subtract these weights: King Pin weight (~1200 lbs.), fifth wheel hitch weight (~200 lbs.), 15% - 20% of the cargo weight in the trailer ( include battery, propane and cargo), cargo in the tow vehicle ( you and other individuals, pets, and all cargo, not just that in the bed ). You are over payload pretty quick. Don’t pay attention to people who post that they tow their trailer just fine. It is not about tow capacity. It is about payload capacity. It is like bending a paper clip. It won’t break on the first bend but it will eventually break. So will something in your truck: tires, bearings, suspension, etc. If you are unfortunate enough to have someone hurt and the lawyers get involved, you might lose your house and all your savings. How can then the dealer report fifth wheel tow able? There are some, but very few, half ton trucks that are built with a special heavy duty package. These are very special order units. Look at the payload capacity on you driver door pillar and stay safe.

As a 21 year veteran truck driver I’ve seen guys on the side of the road with all sorts of problems trying to do stuff like this not to say that it cannot be done but long distance and mountain west driving completely different if you’re in Kansas and you’re not gonna leave Kansas or Ohio or someplace where there’s no hills you might be fine rule of thumb get the truck that has a little bit to a lot more than what you need for what you’re towing and you can never go wrong if you get an F3 50 single wheel nothing to worry about you shouldn’t even have to add airbags or any of that stuff if you don’t want to but if you want to push the limits of your truck good luck

@Joe-bv7io

Depends on the payload capacity of the truck...almost always you'll run out of payload before you run out of towing capacity. Is the truck able to tow it? YES. Is it legal, NO. Of course this is in reply to the camper they posted. As for your camper Ed, 7000# fully loaded isn't as near as much as the one they posted. But again, look at your payload sticker in your door jamb. Subtract all the passengers weights from it, subtract cargo weight (including bed covers, rubber mats, anything you've added after buying the truck) and that will tell you what is left for payload to tow a trailer. For travel trailers, you are supposed to have 10-15% of the trailer weight on the hitch. So for a trailer that weighs in at 7000# with full cargo in it, you'd need to have at least 700# of payload left to haul it. I'd suggest having 13% as that would be the sweet spot which would require 910# of payload left. Hopefully that spells it out for some people on here. As I've said before, you almost always run out of payload before you hit your max towing. Go over either of these numbers, and you are no longer legal, and any accident your involved in your insurance will say 'good luck' to you, cause you'll be on your own.

curious how you got to the 3,240 on the 2016 F150. I got one a couple months back and its decked out with pretty much every option but the max payload package. I'm pissed now because I'm realizing just how hymned by payload capacity. I have a curb weight of about 5,450 lbs (just weighed) that includes all the factory options (side-steps, FX package, 6.5" bed, V6 Eco, max tow package, spray bed liner, matts, 20" rim, 30 gallon gas tank (empty), whatever). My gross vehicle limit is 7,050, so that leave about 1,600. I am curious of your how your math works. Do you mind sharing? What is stupid is I would almost use all the payload if I just have 5 big dudes and fill up the gas tank, and get a cooler of big... Seems just wrong.

Ok I will say it’s wonderful to have a 1/2 that could pull a house, but it’s not made for it. Go cross country like that and you will have a horrible experience and need to calm your nerves afterwards. If you’re only dropping a boat in and outta water at the boat ramp the extra rating is nice. Towing a fifth wheel down the street ok, but for long safe enjoyable trips get the right tool for the job. I own an F150 for around town jobs and the Silverado 2500 for long distance heavy loads. That eco boost will get worse mileage than the V8 towing.

People say that truck is done, do you people realize this is the most capable half ton ever made? People pull gooseneck and fifth wheels all the time with these trucks, not to mention snow plowing. They’re built with more towing, payload, horsepower and torque than a 1998 Chevy 3500hd.

You didn't mention what the pin weight is. On that truck, with driver, passenger, full tank of gas and the hitch in the bed, you *might* have 1,000 pounds of slack on the GVWR of the truck. So are you saying the pin weight is less than 1,000 pounds? And that the rear axle of the truck isn't over GAWR?

How much does that trailer weight and what is the hitch weight. Is it even safe to tow that with a 1/2 ton??? Thant's a lot of wear and tear on that suspension.

Noticeably absent in your “sales pitch”was any mention about the vehicles payload capacity, the trailers GVWR or tongue weight. If you really wanted to convince the “nay sayers” maybe start by throwing those numbers out there. All you did was demonstrate it could make a 90 degree turn. That’s not the number one thing we look for when matching a truck to a trailer. What this video actually accomplished was proving that the vast majority of RV and truck salesman know little (if anything) about towing. Nice work!

1/2 ton trucks can do more than people give them credit for. Riddle me this. I have a Ram 1500 Big Horn with the 3.0 Ecodiesel. The tow rating is 7,600 lbs and the payload is 1200 lbs. If you take my truck specs and remove the 4 wheel drive and put a 5.7 hemi in it, it can magically tow 11,800 lbs and have a payload of 1800 lbs. What magically changed? Perhaps the overall weight of the truck is lighter, so it can take more payload, okay, that makes sense. However, the tow capacity doesn't make any sense. Did the frame change or any of the structure itself change? Nope, structurally still the exact same truck. If anything with the 4 wheel drive, the suspension is a little heavier, but maybe not, if anything the truck itself is a little heavier, so I would feel more comfortable pulling something like this with a little heavier truck. At the end of the day, I pull a 29" fifth wheel with a GVWR of 10,100 lbs and have had absolutely no problems. I have a set of air lift 5000K bags with a Andersen hitch and it works wonderfully.

Yeah man, I'm trying to get to the bottom of this army of individuals that are against even 'attempting' to pull a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton... I mean, if the math works out, it works out. If you're in the green with payload and tow ratings, then what's the deal there's got to be safety factors (not that anyone should knowingly exceed these ratings). I agree that lawsuits can get out of hand if you are proven to be grossly negligent in your truck/trailer combo, however if you are able to show you've done your due diligence the burden of proof for gross negligence would be on the other side. I mean, get a dash cam front and rear, drive safe, if you have a bad feeling or it feels awkward, then don't do it.

I'd like to see the payload and tow sticker of the truck. Just want to be difficult with your guys. I really doubt Ford would over rate the chassis of the truck based on liability alone. The 2021 F150 if equipped correctly has a 3300 cargo capacity and 14k pound tow rating. Conservative of what the truck can actually do before breaking or becoming a true safety concern. Sure, who wouldn't want a 3/4 ton tow rig. But why if you are just going to a camp ground an hour from home. Seems like a waste to me in daily driving fuel economy and out of pocket upfront. But that's just me. I've owned several half ton trucks, and an f350, towed with them all. All safely too I might add never exceeding manufacturers ccc and tow numbers. I keep seeing comments about "I own this truck for running around and this other truck for towing" it isnt realistic for most people to own 49 vehicles, one for running for a gallon if milk, one to pick your dog up from the vet, one to go pick up carry out, etc. Or, my favorite, "get the right tool for the job" which means in most cases of going to the hardware store and buying a 4ft long pipe wrench to work on your kitchen sink. Literally I had a guy tell me to buy a 1 ton to pull a 5th wheel with a 1400 pound pin weight, that a half ton just can't do it. Not enough information given in this video to comment whether it is actually safe to do or not. Would I personally take this set up through the rocky mountains? Hell no...aside from the fact the rocky mountains are entirely too close to California for my liking, I wouldn't want to deal with the truck being under powered nor the truck not having enough weight to control it in a downgrade. On the other hand, would I take this rig a couple house from home for a long weekend? Damn right I would if the trailer and cargo limits do not exceed the trucks sticker. There are way more factors in making these decisions on tow rig and trailer that everyone leaves out. How far will you be towing? How frequent? Will you be loading down with a bunch of gear every trip? Do you live in the mountains? Will you be piling 5 clowns and a midget in the vehicle with you? Do you own a hamster? Lots of questions need answered before making these decisions. Lots.

I have a 2003 GMC 1500 sierra and added a 5th wheel hitch to pull a 15k lb trailer. I added coil over shocks in the rear add about 500lbs, added 5,000lb air bag leveling support, and 1000 lb support on leafs, witch make it more capable of handing that trailer. Adding double transmission coolers with temp gage , and adding cold air intake w/ ezlxhaust upgrade should give me a decent hp & torque gain on the 5.3l . Any other suggestions to improve the safety other than bigger rotors and brakes which I'm going to do next.

You would have to be nuts to go on any long trip like this. 5.0 coyote and 3.5 ecoboost are very powerful engines but they dont add to the weight of the truck and size of the bed and frame. You do not pull a fith wheel with a light duty truck plain and simple. Engine horsepower is not all that matters. Take in brakes frame suspension. I couldn't imagine beeing on a highway on a windy day with that set up. That truck is not designed to have that much weight behind it plain and simple. This needs a 3/4 or 1 ton truck for the sake of stability and braking alone.

Stop with naysayer BS: trailer pin weight = 1420lbs, truck payload: rated for 2630lbs with 150lb driver so 2780lbs empty (and that's as equipped from factory), 2780 - 1420 = 1320lbs for passengers and gear. Now towing: truck tow capacity: 10,300lbs (ecoboost), trailer empty: 7485lbs, 2815lbs left on truck weight limit. Where's the legality problems with this setup?
@brandenbrooks8560
@brandenbrooks8560 5 лет назад
Ok, first there is no way that truck with the 20" rims and 6 lug configuration has the heavy duty payload package as that requires the 18" rim and 7 lug pattern, so maximum payload capacity of a 145" WB f150 4x4 super crew ecoboost is 2060. Also Ford doesn't offer the Heavy Duty Payload Package on the 5.5' bed for that model year. The spray in bed liner and lariat features will further reduce the payload as will the 200lb B&W Hitch. Lets be generous and assume no add-ons or features and only the hitch, you now have 1860 lbs to play with. Also that specific configuration has a max 5th wheel tow rating of 9800 and a GCWR of 16100. The payload rating doesn't assume a 150lb driver that's only done for a slide in camper and if you go by those ratings then the payload is even further reduced. A 3.5l EB with 157" WB 4x4 SC with HDPP has a cargo weight rating of 1808 down from the 2650 payload rating, magically enough when Ford takes into account the weight of people a full tank of gas and the equipment to outfit the vehicle, they also remove that extra weight from its capability. Now this truck has an unrealistic payload of 2060-200 for hitch and being generous we have a 150lb driver, you now have 1710lbs of payload. Empty trailer weights don't include propane, batteries, hoses, tanks, tools, chalks, and the many many other accessories RVers carry with them, so lets assume these people travel with a truly empty camper and buy everything when they get to the site. A 7485lb 5th wheel has a pin weight between 1122.75lbs and 1871.25lbs giving you a maximum of 587.25lbs for everything over a tank of gas and your 150lb driver assuming this truck was bare bones. Keep in mind you also have a GAWR of around 3800lbs for the rear axle on this truck and you will be getting pretty close to hitting it with this setup.

@@brandenbrooks8560 Buyer beware of these reported half ton tow able fifth wheel trailers.

It is sad that any company would put their customer’s lives at risk with this setup. They make 3/4 and 1 tons for a reason. NO WAY anyone that needs that big of a trailer (big family) would meet the weight requirements of the F150. I had a 2016 and my 30’ bumper pull that weighed 7000 pounds wasn’t comfortable. It can do it, but it’s not relaxing. This is way worse than what I had. If I ever saw a dealership advertise this I would never buy from them. Be nice to know the tongue weight and payload sticker on that truck.
