FORD F100 LOWERING REAR SUSPENSION - SHOCK ABSORBER MOD

Lowering the rear suspension on Ford F100 requires different shock absorbers and mounting brackets. I go through the process of finding the correct shock absorbers and build custom mounting brackets. I also add bump stops to prevent the shocks from bottoming out.

Your "forest engineering" technique is called the "SWAG" Method in America: a "Scientific Wild Ass Guess." Both are very effective most of the time. Great video.

good work, my f-100 is a custom 1980 351 Windsor Stroker 406 cui. now 9 inch rear end, needs new steering column to finish and the c- notch to drop it.

Another very interesting and informative video. I can appreciate all of the hands on work having done a drop on my own F100. I didn't drop as far as your truck so I didn't have quite the same issues. Very good job , and very good explanation as always. Being a tool and die maker /designer I have access to AutoCad drafting program which allows me to lay out on the computer screen the shock positions compressed and extended and provides need measurements and locations. Have you ever looked into one of the free drafting programs available on the internet? Still , there is nothing wrong with the hands on trial and error method that you used. No substitute for experience and no better education than the school of hard knocks. Thank you for the video. !!!!! I remain Very impressed.

Thanks for the feedback and info, appreciated. I have Sketchup, suppose I could I have messed around on the computer some. Still would have had to take a bunch of measurements to make a drawing, but my main excuse is that I would much rather spend time in the shop with dirty hands than sitting behind a screen in the house...😂

Just an FYI: You might want to put a hold on burning in those lower shock mounts. Since you don't have motor mounts for your engine. You don't know what the pinion angle or the angle of your transmission. Once you have those locked in, then you should burn in the shocks mounts in. Bart
@ishsiriram8286
@ishsiriram8286 2 года назад
I worked out my pinion angle then did my shock mounts... Important point you raise here. Another thing to factor in, is allowing a little more angle (say 1 degree more). So that during acceleration and or run conditions the optimum angle is attained... that takes into account that the diff wants to twist on acceleration. This is more exaggerated with leaf springs...Just something to consider. that's my 2c worth.
@ratrodsafrica
@ratrodsafrica 2 года назад
Hey Bart. Sharp observation! The spring perch brackets are not welded to the differential yet, so it can still rotate. When I made the bottom brackets, I ensured enough clearance to allow setting up pinion angle as required. So, thankfully I did keep it in mind! Where are you located Bart?

Hey Duffy, I had a challenge on my 64 F100 with the shocks as well. When I bought the truck there was air shocks on the rear axle. There was two sets of mounting brackets on the axle housing. The brackets for the air shocks were bird shit welded on and I assumed the were made special just for the air shocks. So I cut them off!:) Hmmm, it seems that the axle is from a later model truck where the shocks mounted farther outboard and at an angle toward the outside. When I picked up my new shocks and screwed around for several hours I determined they could only be mounted back where the air shocks had been. Anyway I made new brackets and did a better job of bird shit welding then back on. The worst part was removing the diff to drain the gear lube before welding. Thanks for another great video!:)

Been there done that, The only thing you missed it that the drop out on the shocks is too far. So, when you bring the shock up to connect to the axle you are negating the valving of the shock or at least decreasing it's capacities. I learned this the hard way by lowing cars for years
@ratrodsafrica
@ratrodsafrica Год назад
Thanks for the feedback. Guess I will learn the hard way too!

Wow those tyres are really wide for your back wheels. What size is your tyres if you don't mind me asking. In the Philippines where I live we can have steel wheels banded ( widened ) no problem the problem is finding wide tyres, over here a 265 is a wide tyre. Go with a rear shock off a Jeep CJ5 they are shorter with the axle on top of the leaf spring like you are trying to do from the factory.
@ratrodsafrica
@ratrodsafrica Год назад
295. Anything wider than 265 is quite difficult to find here too.

cant you just blast offf the rivets holding front spring perches and just raise them up drill new holes for bolts or maybe flip them upside down? then you have a FREE ratrod lowering of about 2 -3 inches, or 5-6 when combined with rear lowering shackle
@ratrodsafrica
