How to remove the lock clip using a standard 14mm socket with extensions when no key is available. Also removal of black tube prior is required that guides lowering jack to the key.

14MM long socket worked for me on my 2008 F350. Did not have to take the tire all the way down. The lock popped right off! Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

I used a 9/16 long socket for a 2002 ford f150 xlt . The 14mm did not work for me .

I tried 15mm but it slipped and wouldn't turn. 14 mm 12-point socket worked perfectly on my 2006 Ford F350 dually diesel. After taking down the tire - I tried pulling while wiggling the tube (advice from another video) but couldn't get it to come off. When I used a Craftsman strap wrench (with an open end) from underneath it worked fine. After looking at the end of the tube I believe it wouldn't matter which way I turned it.

14 mm 12 pt socket was a bit big for my 2006 F350. 13 mm was too small. Took the tube off, reached the 14 mm over the lock at an angle to get a better grip. The dually rim has an opening big enough to get your hand and socket and wrench to lower it. Removed the POS lock for good. Not worried about someone stealing it because they'll think there's a lock on there.

The 14 mm point socket worked for me. My Irwin bolt grip nut remover just spun without biting. Thanks for the video!

did you know the tube that you went thru with that long extension, can be pulled out, thus exposing the lock that you can just pry off with a scew driver and then there is no need for any special tools or sockets. you can use the long spare tire rod that came with the truck (if it did come with truck)., to lower the spare tire or raise it.

@TonyD61 - this was the first time I lowered the spare on this truck. I removed the guide tube but couldn't see the key because the tire is in the way. I might have popped it off after poking around for 30 minutes but the 12 point socket did it in 10 seconds.

2011 f250 crew... 17mm would have worked.. i tried it after the unit was out.. worked well. Worked at least an hour trying different sockets.. cut the nipple off the end of the cable with dremel and hit the spring assembly with rubber hammer pulling the rest of the cable out of the unit..clean and faster..

Tire was still on in the up position and very limited space.. alignment tube came off easily with pull and twist.. 17mm for this...

Hi Paul, so after you cut the end of the cable, please, were you able to swage a new end on, thus, continue to use the winch normally? Also, my tire is in the stowed position, did you support it prior to cutting the tip off the end of the cable, or does the spring still keep it up until you beat on the spring? Thanks, Tim

Thank you for the information. But I couldn't get a 14mm to work. I tried a 9/16 and it worked great. Thank you for the tip.

it's not "public" if you have to sign into something owned by a corporation there, youtube/google ;) anyway, this 14mm socket was the business for me. what i've learned over the past week of researching this freeing of the spare tire thing is that the outside diameter of of the winch-end of the keys differ across the 10th gen F150s, and further differences in the similar year Super Duty trucks and i'm sure more recently too. for some the 15mm bolt remover works, but that was too big for this one. also 15mm 12 point and 9/16" that Brian mentioned. the 14mm is just perfectly too small and couple taps with a light hammer and it's seated. it would be nice to find an OG key to fit but my understanding is that Ford made between 13 and 16 different shaped keys dispersed across the population so see how easy they are to differentiate to find a key off ebay. removal ease of the guide tube also varies, some are bolted in and some like mine just twist off. anyway, good luck to those coming across these trucks. it may take some time but you'll get it done. thanks much Andrew

Hi Andrew, my truck is a 2003, F-150, 7700. Please, how much force should I expect to smack the socket on? I tried both, 14mm, and 9/16, 12-point sockets, and with moderate tapping, neither even began to squeeze onto the lock. I was hesitant to really wail on it. Also, quite a few people have commented that you can easily remove the plastic, guide tube, and knock the lock out from the side, as another approach. However, I've yanked (from the bumper, rearward) and pried from below going through a tire spoke) and I can't budge it. Please, any advice? Thanks, Tim

You could have shortened this video by at least a minute if you didn't say "14mm socket" about 200 times. Okay, "14mm socket." Got it. Sheesh.
