Ford Kuga PHEV: A touch more dynamic

It seems you can't have a cutting-edge mid-sized SUV of any kind these days without having a plug-in hybrid version, so Ford offers that tech with its third-generation Kuga crossover. There are the usual PHEV calling card features here - a 35 mile all-electric driving range, a super-low Benefit-in-Kind taxation rating and a rather high sticker price. Built into a package that should feel a touch more dynamic than most of its rivals.

If I ever get one I would only go for the vignale version. I suspect it will be expensive.

I have the vignale phev kuga in solar silver, absolutely love it. However 2 things to note. 1. Try and get an early one, as the new builds no longer come with noise cancelling tech. 2. All kuga PHEV are subject to a massive recall on the batter venting system atm.

The steering is odd. It has a springy effect that makes driving uncomfortable, especially for passengers. It springs back to middle, and you have to adjust this tendency all the time.

Do you guys actually test the range of these cars? All reviews in my country state they either reached the WLTP range or exceeded it. But whenever I watch a UK review, they state "probably, 25 miles is more likely"?

Are the batteries air or liquid cooled?

Have you driven the c5 aircross how do you rate both cars against each other?

When a phev has depleted it's battery it behaves the same as a normal hybrid. The reviewer should know this and not state that it becomes a heavy petrol powered suv. This is misleading and unprofessional.

You are very right about your observation. Because of the fire risk - www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/manufacturer-news/2020/08/11/ford-kuga-phev-fire-risk-discovered - I have been driving on petrol only during the last few weeks. I am suprised that my Kuga does 50+ mpg.

He also says its very inefficient to use the charge mode but if you're using the heater and/or at higher speeds its actually cleaner than using grid electric most days. On top of that he brushes the 35 mile range off and says 25 is more likely but thats not true on the new WLTP cycle either. Pretty poor review really.

@@siraff4461 no one ever gets the wltp range I’m afraid

@@robru I beg to differ. NEDC no one ever got near but WLTP is pretty close if you're actually driving carefully. Obviously you're not getting it if you've got your foot in but its very realistic in most cars. As a case in point I've run mine for over 11k miles now and average battery range has been 38 miles. Over winter it was down to late 20's/early 30's but now the sun is coming out again its easy to get over 40 miles. Being daft, turning everything off and just doing an eco run can get over 50 miles. Also being daft, locking it in ev and beating it I've had it as low as 23 miles but that takes just as much doing as the eco run. For a similar battery size, CO2 output and weight the NEDC cycle would have probably come out with around 50-55 miles which in normal driving wouldn't be attainable.

Being an old Kuga model owner I was waiting for this as a replacement but I am disappointed. The black interior is drab with no choice, clear glass is not available ( I hate privacy glass) and I want high profile tyres for ride comfort on our ever worsening roads. Ford is not alone in this modern trend of stiff suspension, blacked out glass and lack of exterior colour choice.
@GerardWassink

Clive Haynes Check the configuration on the Ford site. You are talking rubbish, pardon my french. Privacy glass is an option (at least here in the NL) as well as the tyre size and the exterior colour.

@@GerardWassink Hi, thanks for your comments, I have checked the configurator and clear glass here in the UK is not available but I agree that there is some choice of tyre size but not interior colour. With regard to the exterior colour I said that the choice was lacking. Regards
