Ford Lightning Platinum | Towing a Boat

I attempted to tow a boat with the F150 Lightning platinum to see if it could replace my gas powered truck. Having read the towing reviews on this truck, I was not optimistic about it being able to complete the task without stopping to charge. I was also towing through an extreme elevation change which is detrimental to EV driving range.

There's a really cool trailer light test for trailers. Automatically tests turn signals, brake lights, tail lights and runs through all these tests several times while you're out monitoring the lights. You can also activate these trailer light test via ford app on your phone

Would it be possible for you to do a video of towing the boat both ways? Tow it to the ramp and then back to where you are keeping it? That is almost the equivalent of me towing my boat to the Watts Bar Dam boat ramp and back. Except my boat does not weigh as much and no mountain to climb.

Great information. I’ve actually got a very similar use case. (Live in Orange County and have a boat that I take to big bear) I’ve got a standard range pro on order so I’ll definitely be doing a little charging at the base of the mountain. Not a problem.

Good vid. I’m loving my Lightning, too, though haven’t hauled w it yet. But you would get more clicks if you whined and complained like Hoovie did! 😂

A year later, but I'm about to do almost the same thing. I have about as far to go, but a slightly larger (I think) pontoon boat. I've got a pretty long downhill stretch too. Wish me luck!

Verdict?
@seanmivey
@seanmivey 25 дней назад
@@WhiteWolf047 It went GREAT! I had ~100 miles to go and ended up getting back with like 15% left. I averaged 1 mi/kw and there was a charger 5 minutes from the pickup spot that I charged to 95%. I ran 60-65mph most of the way (speed limit drops for the last 15 miles or so). Would it have been easier in a gas? Yeah, probably. I wouldn't have had to charge for 30 minutes before picking up the boat. But I haven't had to do it since, and it's been a hell of a lot better and cheaper driving it back and forth to the lake the last couple months. It's a keeper for me! Oh, and I have my tesla charging working now too. So that same trip would have been less of a concern because there's 2 super chargers between here and there.

Do you have the capability to record the video from the cameras? Were there any charging stations in between the trip. I think I would be concerned about traffic delays causing more energy.
@Balo657
@Balo657 Год назад
I’m pretty sure there is but it does make it difficult if you’re towing a trailer.
@ZentRose
@ZentRose Год назад
This truck did not have the ability to record video from the cameras. Yes there are charging stations on the route but I could not access them while towing.

Electric vehicles are much more efficient in stop & go traffic than ICE vehicles. In case of traffic jams.
@Balo657
@Balo657 Год назад
If it wasn’t for regenerative braking, you would be cutting it close haha. I’m sure with time the tech will improve and these trucks could get a longer range.

That trailer is only 1-2k lbs correct?
@ZentRose

Yes 1300 lb. The boat is 3800 lb.

Let’s see a round trip towing the boat both ways same route. That would be interesting, eh?
@DSKSeattle

That is when you use the ICE truck, , lol no range anxiety

I wonder how this would compare to a powerboost.
@ZentRose
@ZentRose Год назад
I think the powerboost makes more sense for people that have to do longer trips.
@pstoneking3418
@pstoneking3418 Год назад
@@ZentRose agreed.. the lightning is the perfect truck as long as it's used within home range. When you have to use a public charger, you've just lost the efficiency of the lightning. $.43/kwh public versus $.15/kwh tops for home costs. If I needed my lightning where I always had to use public chargers, I wouldn't have purchased it. But locally I can do everything that my 2014 F150 V8 would do and much more with the on board power , scales and 360 degree cameras.
@TheJoey3590
@TheJoey3590 Год назад
The instant torque seems cool, but I would still prefer a diesel or gasoline for towing. I would constantly worry about the range on the lightning.

Took me about double that time on a 32 amp level 2 charger!
@pstoneking3418
@pstoneking3418 Год назад
True but I'd be in bed sleeping much of that time and if like me & has the 131 kwh battery then he got the 80 amp pro charger which will do it in about 8 hrs. With no gasoline stop that would've cost a whole lot more.
@lenm2857
@lenm2857 6 месяцев назад
More like 30-40 mins on a fast charger, slow chargers are mostly used over night when you are sleeping.

Why? It's a sealed system. It's no better/worse than getting your diff, transfer case or transmission in the water. Ford lists it as having a 24" wading depth.

Impressive it tows a empty trailer and lost 42% battery driving 65 miles. Bet it uses more battery with boat on it too.
