Today, we park two iconic Ford cars side by side and examine what makes them great, and different- The Ford Model A and the Ford Model T.
Once upon a time, HALF of all the cars on American roads were Ford Model T's. Why was the Model T so popular? Was the Model T any good? Let's have a look.

Well done. While the "seniors" in the audience may have already known the differences between the Model A and the Model T, the youngsters among us probably will find your comparisons enlightening. If they're even interested :)

Thanks, Rick! The Model T was fun to drive, but I sure wouldn't want to have to depend on one to get around today. They make a fun toy, that's for sure. The Model A's make good transportation options even today.

@@ModelA I've only driven a Model T once, a friends 1915 Touring. After a short learning session in the parking lot of a local high school, we headed out the back roads of the little town he lived in. We probably didn't go faster than 25 miles/hour, but if felt as if we were just on the edge of being out of control. I loved it.

@@mafcawebmaster4237 awesome, i drive a 1914 T in the Netherlands, it sure is getting used too, after driving standard, this clutch is odd, ...forgot, did step on it, and woooooooosh i was on the middle of the intersection, just mist 2 bicyclists, they called the T Jumping Lena ? dont ever think it is slow....yes, stalled it, looking at the dash to start...shit i need to go out, crank it....people looking at me like i was from outer space, lucky me, it started at once...walking back to the left door...o shit....no left door...at home nearly had an extra door in the barn, ...then, try to get to the crank ? ?? sitting on top of the car...yes...drive often with bare feet, did slide my tow against a sparkplug,,,still a wooden firewall with a large sparing, great fun to take it off road, the whole body moves and that feels weird, dont forget to open the gas tap, we did and cranked till we where exhausted, the handbrake, also high gear, my friend cranking, nearly end up under it, always cheque the spark advance lever, had a sore wrist for days, put a block in front of the wheels before starting when the motor is still cold, gears may stick, and Lena might decide to jump while your cranking her, oh, she might try, never mind i am over 6 ft ca 250 lbs, wear wooden shoes, putting my foot out will sure stop her, and yes, those early T s have lots of room, after learning her tricks, have a good feeling for humor, she is lovely to drive and can be driven in heavy traffic, the front window can come off so i loaded some 12 feet boards on her, or even longer is no problem and finding a parking place is never a problem neither, who is writing out a ticket on a 1914 car ??? the car was used for cutting firewood, and much more, the low and reverse pedals next to each other is a great idea, so you can rock it out of mud and snow, in reverse you can take any obstacle, a challenge or sport to drive, it can drive on ethanol, kerosene or almost anything, farmers did use pig skin to replace worn bearings, the french used the T as tanks, with tracks and as ambulances during the 1st war, the swedish made sledges out of them, the A is a "civil car, the T was an off road and do it all, sort of "thing" no, will not drive it on the freeway, but save a lot of time in search for parking space, our 2 dogs love it so do our friends, still an amazing car,

One thing I have always wondered, and you remind me to do even more of, is the matter of how owners found their parked _Model T_ cars, when they were “all“ black, had no locks, and were started by an external crank, and half of all cars in America were clones of each other. Color is the prevalent and preferred method of distinguishment; how did people know otherwise? Belated congratulations on your anniversary!

Your tape measure + camera tilt demonstration showing the maximum incline of the Model T vs. A was the simplest, clearest, and best I've ever seen. I've heard of the fuel gravity feed issue probably a million times, but I've never seen anyone actually quantify it like you did so that someone who hasn't ever driven one of these can understand the limits of these cars in their factory configurations.

I've had SO many people walk up to me at gas stations or wherever and blurt out "you have to go backwards up hills in that thing, right?" I admit to getting a bit sick of hearing that, so I simply HAD to do that demo!! Thank you!

Since March 2022, I have had the priveledge of driving visitors around Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan in a vintage Model T. I really enjoyed your intro to the Model T and comparison to the Model A. One detail not mentioned... Ford moved the fuel tank to the cowl location for the last two model years of the T, 1926 and 1927. This allowed a lower front seat, which in turn allowed a signifcantly lower roof than earlier years. I mixed blessing at best... the lower front seat reduced an already marginal driving position to a truly cramped backache inducing one! Body construction was also updated from sheet steel over wood framing to an all steel structure, save for the floor board. I look forward to viewing more of your videos!

My undergraduate degree is in film. The fact that there's no driver's side door on a Model T suddenly explains why in some films of the 1930s, the driver enters a car on the passenger side. Geared to an audience that would immediately understand this approach as old fashioned, yet foreign to those of us born later, I am suddenly delighted to be "in the know." A film title doesn't comes to mind at the moment. When one does, or I see this happen in the future, I am going to come back here and comment again!

One major advantage of the A's brakes vs the T's. I met a gentleman that had a T, I believe he said he snapped the driveshaft climbing a hill which mean no more going up the hill of course. But also no way to stop the car as a it rolled back down the hill since the brakes are in the drive line. Yikes.

The Canadian version had a drivers door and the gas tank was also moved into the cowl on many later models.

Well done Paul. Just a note, the Canadian T tourers had 4 doors wether they were LHD or RHD. Saved them making market specific bodies. Consequently my RHD Australian assembled T tourer has 4 doors, not that I can get in the drivers side with the handbrake and wheel in the way. And a big Happy Anniversary to you both.

I am a senior (68) but I think my father would know the differences better than I would. I remember he said he actually had a model A. What a vast improvement it was on the T. Thanks for the video Paul.

Beautiful ‘15 T. Very thorough video. I’ve been in love with the model T since I was About 11 years old. Eventually, I’ll fulfill my bucket list item by getting to start one (by crank) a ride in one.

I am only 73 and I have owned both as used cars. I always felt that the T was a horseless carriage and the A was the first car. The T that I owned stripped the pinion so it had a bit of drive but essentially no brakes. I was about 18 at the time and undercapitalized. Sold it for a profit and moved on.

FINALLY someone that mentions the 1926 T as having OTHER colors than black!! My dad has a 1926 Model T, which my grandfather bought from the original owner back in 1974, and it was black....in 1974. But my dad and brother were working on restoring it a few years ago (it has always been in good condition btw! Just eventually needed some TLC.) While my brother was sandblasting it and a family friend was fixing some of the bodywork, they came to discover that it was in fact GREEN underneath, NOT originally painted black! (Except of course the wheels, which were always a tan color, and I believe the running boards/fenders were actually originally black.) So during the restoration, my dad decided to paint it in a similar green color to the original instead! :)

My great great grandfather, who owned a large home and farm in mid-Michigan bought a Model T in 1915. His youngest son, who was my great grandfather, bought and repaired one when he grew older and later ran a Ford dealership through most of the 1960's. My grandmother's first car, IIRC, was a Ford Galaxie thanks to him. Fast forward to the 90's, my mother drove a Ford Taurus and now in the present day, I drive a Lincoln Town Car. Crazy to think that our family's Ford tradition all started with a car much like this.

It's hard not to respect the Model T for what it managed to accomplish, but the Model A was/is a huge step forward in practical motoring and ease of use. That being said, the last couple years of Model T production ('26-'27) with the updated styling are really nice looking cars. It's like a cute baby Model A.

Nicely done Paul. Model "T"'s are a different kind of animal.....that's for sure. However, back in the day, at the very beginning of "T" production, there was barely anything else to compare to it and the way it was controlled. We look at it now as very "low tech", but back then, it was cutting edge. Amazing....Thanks for the video.

My uncle had a rusting old hulk of a 1917 T truck that I loved to play on as a kid... One of the things I remember was that it had a valve stem on the gas tank so that you could use a tire pump to "pressurize" it to keep it running going up hill... never understood why they never came up with a better solution all the way thru to the end of production of the Model T!

Thanks for another excellent video! Your presentations are very well organized and interesting. Happy 29th Anniversary! My wife and I are at 44 years on the books. Our Model A was my Dad's until he gave it to me in '95 (rest in eternal peace Pop). I can happily say that I drove my Model A Ford to high school in the mid 60's, even though it belonged to Dad at the time. Thanks again, the Model T history was great!

@@ModelA It actually belongs to Ben Jones who is a friend of mine (Cooter in the Dukes of Hazzard). He is a great guy. He has a Boss Hog Cadilac, his tow truck. some of the police cars used in the show and Daisey Duke's Jeep! I'm with you...I LOVE the General Lee! I have a 1971 Chevelle SS and am in the process of purchasing a completely restored 1942 Ford Supreme Deluxe Coupe. It was restored to original condition with a couple of things to improve it (electric fuel pump, original radio converted to am/fm but you can't tell, and hydraulic brakes). Black of course! Beautiful car with that famous Ford flat head V8! Everything works but the clock! I am a big guy and really wanted a model T and model A, but I tried a couple of them on and couldn't fit. I fit like a glove in the Coupe!

Great Video! The floor pedals on the Model T would be a bit of a mind shift for sure, but I'd like to try driving one some day. I assume the throttle is on the wheel? My '29 Model A took a bit of getting used to as well, mostly the spark advance.

I have commented on here before. I love this channel. It takes me back to my childhood years. My dad was an antique car restorer. He had a 1927 Model T and a 1929 Model A. The former was a ….. Car. The later, a puck up truck. I drove both when I was 19. I worked on them both when I was 10. The Model A became mine when dad passed. I know a few things about antique Fords. Everything said here is true. But I wonder if anyone realizes that the early transitions were a forerunner of the automatic transmission.

I’ve never had trouble running out of gas going up some pretty steep hills even though mine is a 23 and the tank is under the seat. The other thing and I’m not suggesting this is true for the one in your video but they say there are more 1915 T’s now than they made. A bit of a joke but a caveat emptor because the body is the same from 1915 to 1922 and some later models were “converted” to the earlier 1915-1916 look by putting a brass radiator and different hood to make it look more antique 🙃. Last the brakes work a lot better than myth, the issue is the 3” tires. I have locked the back wheels up with the service brake just about smoking the tires once. The car is light so it stops pretty fast. The emergency brake though at least on mine is hopeless. Since the service brake is dependent on a single pin holding the U joint to the drive shaft you hope that holds or you are toast. The car will cruise at 30-33 mph easily and the guy who sold mine to me said “you can go a lot faster in this car than you should be driving it”. I think about what he said sometimes. Not sure how fast I shouldn’t be driving it though.

If you want a car you can use every day- Go with the Model A. If you only plan to tootle around town or partake in a parade, then the T will be OK.

@@turboeddude4849 A fully sorted Model T is a wonderful thing to experience. How far would I go in one? To the 45 MPH zone, that's it. Never on the highway or cross country. I drive Model As everywhere.

For those of us who are old school- the engine displacement is 177 cubic INCHES. Henry would probably roll over in his grave hearing his engine was in metric measurements.LOL

I absolutely LOVED the bloopers and the secret to a happy marriage! One note I'd add about the battery: Batteries became standard in April of 1919 (however, all Ford cars produced from '08 until then were equipped to use an after-market battery). The electrified headlights, from 1915 until April of 1919, were powered by the car's magneto (magnets on the flywheel moving past copper coils of wire). In April 1919, Ford made batteries standard in all cars, and introduced the starter motor. Fun Fact: a Ford with electric headlights that run on magneto is terrifying to drive low revs at night. Batteries also made hand-cranking the car much easier, since the power is in a constant stream to the spark plugs at the flick of a switch, and the timing safely retarded. When hand cranking with the magneto to power the sparks, the engine must be turned over fast enough to generate enough electricity to arc the gap of the spark plugs, and the timing must be advanced a few notches -- that's part of where the broken-wrist stories come from (as well as holding the crank improperly). Very informative, and thank you very much for the energy!

I’ve learned the differences in the model t and a. I am building a fenderless 25 t roadster with a model a engine and transmission swapped into it. Even modified the model t pan to mount a engine into t chassis without modifying the model t chassis. Why would anyone want to do this? It’s fun and I love both the t and a

I’m so glad I found this! My grandpa restored a ‘21 runabout, ‘29 sedan and a ‘39 A truck. I’m fairly mechanically inclined but don’t know where to add oil to the ‘21 T. Can you help me please? Grandpa passed a few years ago and I’ll trying to figure these out to keep them running.

To put oil in a Model T, you pull the floorboards out, then remove the transmission cover (6 screws). Then pour oil into the transmission until it starts to run out of the upper petcock under the car on the rear of the motor..

My father has always called the Ford Mode T the (Novel t) hehe. We always thought they stole the Automobile world of glamour back in 1901 to 1907. But boy did I love one, I loved when me and my friend would take his 1922 Model T and take the Spark and Gas take take the gas three notches down and boom! Up the steep mountain. Great times although not 1920s, I was a 1940 kid.

The 15th million Model T is on display at Greenfield Village The Henry Ford in Dearborn. I got to visit there last year. I also stopped at the Piquette Ave plant where the T was first built. Our tour guide said that no black cars came from there, and how to tell if it was built there was the Ford script on the radiator had sweeping tails on the F and the D.

The first Ford Model A was introduced in 1903. They started over after the Model T, so the Model A was a car after AND before the Model T!

This video was done so well. I love seeing the subtle and not so subtle differences between the two models. You can see that the A really is the way to go. Paul, is there heat in the A, or any aftermarket mechanisms to add heat if it didn't come stock?

Very nice, thanks for putting it out there! How about an acceleration comparison between the two? Or stopping distance, curve handling a.s.o.? Where does the Model T have advantages over the A? (i.e. rocking itself out of a ditch with the fwd and reverse pedal) What are the overall dimensions? (Length, width, tyres, riding height, ...) As you can imagine, I would love to see a Part 2 on this :D Best wishes on your anniversary Adrian

Acceleration comparison? You're joking, right? The Model A can run away and hide from the Model T. Also, without the Ruxstell rear end, the Model T is only good for about 40 MPH, tops.

We do plan on a part 2. I have so much more footage of this car and info about it. Need to put a battery in it first. Starting by crank isn't very civilized. Ha ha!

Very informative and enlightening! Interesting to see how over just a few years the automobile changed and improved. I wonder if our grandchildren look at our current automobiles and marvel at how we ever drove such machines.

I put 12,000 country road miles on a 1914 T Ford runabout (roadster) in the 1990s... My grandfather bought a new T in 1923... He never mastered selective gear cars... That said.. his only car when I was a boy was a 1929 A coupe... It was kept in his backyard un-garaged and I couldn't wait to go out and sit in it and pretend to drive... My grandfather passed in 1968 but.. he had sold the car a couple years before... This is where my love for early cars began...

You got it wrong with the battery. Up until 1919 where the starter became optional which included a generator, no battery was delivered. It was typical dry cell added by dealer og customer just for starting. electric light was feed by the magneto. Also - in Europe (UK) they started experimenting spraypainting with cellulose paint in 1924 and from 1925 you could get colored Model T's in UK and also in Denmark.

Owned both...for cuteness...model T...for drivablity, the model A...I own 2 T's and both are in a museum...they are a disappointment to drive and are dangerous with their transmission brakes...when disc brakes were standard, that is when I stopped driving the T's...everyone could stop better, while I was hoping for the best...I loved T's, since the late 50's...even the T you featured had accessory brakes added....yes, I know...Ford left plenty of room for improvement, hence the thousands of advertisements on how to make the model T better.

@@ModelA The Model T was #1 for about half a century until being surpassed by the Beetle in the '70s. There are a few others that have since surpassed even that, but the Model T is still somewhere around 7th or 8th place. The current #1 spot is held by the Toyota Corolla, at over 50 million.

@@jwalster9412 You have much to learn about antique cars. They are far more reliable than you will ever know. But you might be the type that just pushes everything to its limit all the time and doesn't maintain things. In that case, your assumption would probably be correct.

@@ModelA idk, I've heard many people say antique cars are really reliable, and modern cars are shight boxes, but many other people have said the opposite. It's really more of your opinion on what 'reliability' means. If it mean less complexity, to you, then that's fine, if it means more complexity, but longer lasting parts, then that's also fine. But less parts doesn't always mean more reliability. Alot of new (as in cars 20-15 year old) are known to be vertically indistructable, while the same can be said for older cars. Alot of these vintage cars have been modified to improve reliability, as the original parts wear down over time, and in some cases weren't the best designed. In some cases, carbs would leak fuel onto the engine (a good, example was the Lamborghini Miura that came 40 ish years after the T.) But the same can also happen with modern EFI. I don't know if your T is stock, or how many parts have been replaced with modern counterparts.

@@jwalster9412 That Model T ha won awards for its originality. No modification, absolute faithful restoration using minimal repro parts. Which means it doesn't stop very fast! But if you are the kind of driver that thinks way ahead, then not a problem.

You go back to 1925 and all cars looked like Model As, Ford seemed to be focused on sales and not what the competition was doing and did not have the concept of having 2 models and 2 assembly lines. Maybe he was a micro manager and a 2nd factory doing production did not fit his personality. The car got dirt cheap and sales went through the roof in 1920 and it was not as dated as 1925, maybe keeping up with sales made the next 5 years go by fast. A's engine puts out twice the HP and is capable of getting the car to 55.

Which came first the Model T or the Model A? Back in 6th grade I got into an argument with one of my teachers that the Model T came first. She rebutted that the Model A came first because…..A comes before T. Please tell me I’m right!

The first Ford Model A came in 1903. It was more of a horseless carriage than an automobile. Through the years, Ford worked through the alphabet and his most successful car was the Model T, whose production lasted until 1927. When the new Ford was to be introduced, Ford started over again with A. So, technically, the Model A was in production twice.

@@ModelA Great to hear that Paul. I love Model As -- have owned my late '31 Coupe for 50 years since I was 14-years-old, purchased with paper route savings. Like you, I am a big band fan but not as tuned in since I thought GMO was some sort of awful tasting organic food type. But I finally figured it out. The GMO your referring to has to be the incomparable Glenn Miller Orchestra. I love GMO but I also like the TDAHO.

@@ModelA The original Ford production car in 1903 was the Model A and progressed thru several letters until they reached T. The "New" Model A was introduced for the 1928 year. This was probably done as this was a new starting point for the Ford Motor Co.

I'm a drummer, but barely. I absolutely LOVE GMO. Tina and I have seen GMO perform live 12 times. Whenever they come to our area, I buy front row seats. Have several recordings of Glenn's first and Army bands too. Some vinyl, some CD's.

Bet you didn't know that the Canadian Model Ts had an opening driver's side door. Those mechanical brakes on the Model A were already getting obsolete when the A came out and long overdue for replacement with hydraulics by '39. They work okay if you keep them adjusted but far too many small parts to wear out.

@catmodelt I'd sure like to see a picture of that Ottawa Model T. A brass radiator model, was it? It didn't come from Canada that I know of. But I'd have to do a little research. I'm probably about the same age as you and I guess I should have been looking for '40-'48 hydraulic brake parts at swap meets when there were swap meets. Now I've got to fool around with rebuilding the mechanicals again.

Yes, I did recently learn that Canadian T's has driver side doors. Also, I think the Model A brakes work just fine. But then again, I know how to adjust them properly and which parts to use.

@@ModelA The issue to me isn't how well the Model A brakes work, it's how many small parts are in there to make them work, and wear out. I'd call that an exception to Henry's plan to make the Model A a simple car, along with those Houdeille Shock Absorbers. Knowing how to adjust the brakes in one thing. But how often you have to do it is quite another. At least I was able to simplify the front brakes a little with the installation of brake floaters.

@@jimervin387 Floaters are only good if the wedges and backing plates are worn out. It's a patch. Properly built brake systems won't wear out in our lifetime, and they work fantastic.
