Ford Mondeo Mk4 Rear Trailing Arm Bush Replacement. An overview of how to fit new trailing arm bushes in mk4 ford mondeos. An explanation of the difference between genuine ford bushes and aftermarket equivalents.
Hi Alan. I’m no car mechanic but I like fixing my own car where possible. Your channel is so helpful and easy to follow you’d make a fantastic teacher with all our funny bits thrown in lol 😆 Keep them coming and I’ll keep watching as so many others do. Thanks again Stevie 😊
As for the bush alignment, there is a protruding lump just inside the outer ring of the bush which is alignment marker. It lines up with the notch in the trailing arm.
just had this done but want to say of all videos I looked at out of curiosity yours was by far the best most informative and easy to follow. you clearly know whats what with no guesswork and total common sense which is what I like. thank you and have liked and subscribed.
The best video showing how to replace rear trailing arms bushing! My Volov dealer quoted about $1000 to replace the bushing plus alignment, I tried to get it done by myself once I buy a set of right tools.
Thank you Alan for your recommendations. I was aware of that by reading notes left by your readers. I think I would stay with the same bushing as Volvo used, as they are quality products at lower price comparing those from PowerFlex.
Replaced mine with powerflex ones last month, now recently i seem to be having some metallic clunking/grating/rattle noise when driving. Looked underneath and nothing loose other than exhaust heat shield which i thought was it and reclipped but that didn't fix it. Noise seems to be getting worse after driving over some bumps yesterday. When stationary and open the boot and bounce the suspension i can't reproduce the sound, but it does make some mild grating noise, not sure if thats normal. Also the rear suspension springs seem to have some of the outer metal peeling but didn't look broken to me, is this norma;? should i replace these? Any ideas please? tracking stuff like this down is a nightmare lol.
Nice vid as per Alan , very helpful.. Had my First MOT today since ownership.. advisory on these rear trailing arm bushes , worn , but not excessive... so I guess I have a while .. looks a huge job and something I won’t be able to do myself and looks like things need supporting... Cheers
Same just got the MOT done with the exact same advisories, the car is on a 95 plate I'm the second owner so not a bad car a 2.2 Titanium sport 95,000 on the clock
Alan - do you just work on the firms taxis or do you take customer/private work? Need this doing on my Mondeo but don't have the special tool and don't fancy grovelling around on my garage floor.
Hello Allan I have, benefit from your informative videos when something needs to be done on my 2013 Mondeo. Thinking if it could help others if I ask if it's these Rear Trailing Arm Bush, is to blame for my car, crabs around the corner sometimes. Seems like the rear end is driving over a point where it is loose, or changing camper or direction on the rear wheels. I can not find fault in my bushings or wheel bearing. Have changed my shock absorbers as these were worn but it did not help. The car has driven 200,000 km / 125,000 miles. Sincerely Carsten
There is another similar tool made by "Sealy" or "sealey". Just done mine today as part of its 10 year service. Its a lot easier with a ramp as well but you don't have to lower the suspension, just the arm.
you all probably dont care but does someone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost my password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me.
@Devon Kenneth thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and im in the hacking process atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Hi Alan, does the rear subframe need aligning after doing this or is it fairly "fixed" in place? Do you know if this procedure is any different for the estate version?
Watch all your car vids Alan, This has been worth watching too Great to see you out with your lovely boys... question I’ve got a binding off side rear handbrake I’ve loosened it with wd40 and gave the bracket pivot a grease and it’s done the job for now bug what’s the actual fix? Strip+ clean & rebuild 07 Mk4 mondeo estate 2.0 Quick yes or no would do mate. appreciate chap👍🏻
Badgertronix Them bushes look good if you don't have the tool to fit the genuine ones. Only down side is the price. Nearly £70 per side for power flex and the ford ones are about £28 per side. Still thanks for the info.
hi, your question is a good one, thanks, because the bush can be bolted to the chassis in a slightly different position to the old one, then technically speaking you should check the rear wheel alignment which is not a quick job..but i will say, i have changed many, many of these bushes on the company taxis... and never bothered to check the rear wheel alignment. never have i had rear tyres wearing irregular... so if it were me, i would not bother...if it worries you then you would be correct to have it checked, hope this somewhat helps.
alan howatt thanks. The toe on the OSR is off as the bush is separating, so I'm assuming replacing should correct it but I'll probably get it checked. The tyres for the 19" rims are a bit pricey :( Appreciate all the videos, keep it up. Is that your garage just before the air base off the A14? I drive past on my commute, thought it looked like you
you could get the rear wheel tracking checked if your want but i have changed so many of these bushes now on the taxis and just bolted the arms back up ....none of the cars have had any abnormal rear tyre wear so i don't bother doing any adjustments
@@alan4x that's one bit of info I was looking for, I guess a bit more for inflation. I constantly wish I lived at least a bit closer to you and could have nice day out in Cambridge knowing car was in safe hands at the right price and quality! Do you have local customers coming to you after seeing your channel? if you serviced all Mondeos in your area you'd be dowing the economy of a favour!
@@family-accountemail9111 thanks, appreciate it, i don't do much private customers as too busy with the company cars but we do a few here and there, have a good one
all the bushing press tools are the same, shit, they dont sit properly against the arm because the arm is ribbed,, get it set up as best u can then press it in , it will start on the piss a bit but soon will press in level
I do not know, but I think it is really impossible to find the sweet spot, you see the car is hanging and that "lift thing" is probably not pushing the trailing arm to the full extent, the moment he puts down the car it will be under a different load again and while driving conditions such as impacts or weight are constantly alternating.... All things said I've been told that this part is very unlikely to break, so I guess it simply doesn't matter too much. Although I must say mine is not twisted while hanging.
@@joons3374 you put the bushes in and they have a flat edge that corresponds to markings in the blade. they could go in wrong but you would have to be a complete idiot to do them wrong or do it deliberately wrong......
hi, i have never bothered to check the rear wheel tracking and never had any of the taxis with irregular rear tyres wearing so if it bothered you then do but i would say don't bother
Hi Alan, how long did it take you to replace that rear trailing bush? Maybe 30 minutes? I was told in Ford, they only change the whole rear axle due to the rust...
Thanks . Alan Very helpful the video. How mach you charge to feed both for Galaxy? I am going to pay tomorrow £ 400 pounds. What you thing? The engineer said is 4 hours job. He had to take all the suspension out. I believe is to mach . Very expensive on that price. Thank you again
Hi, Ive got this advisory on the last MOT: Nearside Rear Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Trailing arm bush. (5.3.4 (a) (i)) Is this what you are changing here? Cheers!
Rear near side tyre bald across surface. Turns out the bush needs replacing on both sides. Told that its a 2 person job really and tool needed after seeing this I can see why. They say it's speed bumps damage it just like they do to spring coils. Then they will do the 4 wheel laser tracking which it went in for in the first place !! It was only luck that the guy heard the clunk sound as he drove it over the wheel rollers. To be fare they could have just done the laser tracking and not told me.
why on earth would you wnat wheel alignment ? you dont need to go wasting money on all this wheel alignment crap.. its a big cone.. only need to ever do that if a motor has been in a crash and then needed to go on a jig to bend back into shape...... what he is doing here will not effect alignment at all.
@@alan4x yeah i just did my focus mk2 estate 2005 nearside bush,, u can be sneaky undue the 2 bols and prise it down with wood etc,, but u need to pull it down very hard, the offside i just got pissed off and done it back up , fuel tank needs to be dropped by the looks of it. if u have a ramp then its easy because u can ratchet strap off the ramp,, wouldnt bother undoing 1 bolt on a focus rear suspension,, every single bush will be sized and need cutting off and new bolts etc, very expensive
if you can break the rubber centre out of the bush, usually by twisting it with a large screwdriver and cut a slot in the outer casing with a hack saw blade then the bush outer casing should tap out quite easily
I've been told by a garage that these bushings are usually the last to go with general rear suspension failure. Meaning by the time they need to be changed, shocks and other stuff are already gone, and that's why the bushes are failing. Is this true?
Very very good video. Well done 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Got a ford mondeo and Split both rear trailing arm. Waiting for ford garage to fix it. My question is, how does it got damaged and how to maintain it once fitted?
Hi Alan just a quick one I'm throwing out there ? Have you or anyone else ? ever heard a mk4 mondeo with a rattling like a giger counter coming from the seatbelts at ear hight ? I've tried just about everything to stop the noise but no joy 🙉 it's driving me crazy 😲
@@alan4x ok thanks anyway - I must be really unlucky 😕 I love my mondeo in every way apart from this seat belt rattle which is driving me to the point of no return ! 😨 Keep up the great videos 👍
Hi Al Not sure if you answer private mails but desperate to sort a prob and who better My MK4 has a tendancy to wear rear tyres unevenly on the inside. I mean not all the way around just about 90 percent so after a while we get a wow wow wow tyre noise at anything over 50mph Mot picked up again last week on this on a tyre with only 4000 miles on it. No accidents ever or curbs. Passed mot no issues and I asked if he would check the suspension. Advice was they all do it it's common No bushes showing wear. Wheels are in balance No there are camber bolts for sale on eBay. From the rear the wheels do look tipped in at the top so can these bolts help? Hope you can help. Going through too many tyres Cheers Al
hi, the rear wheels are probably out of alignment and need tracking...the inner bolts on your lower suspension arms .. the arms the springs sit in are what you would loosen to adjust the rear tracking... that's if they are not seized up..you just need to find a garage that knows how to track cars properly
I bought bushes from Lemförder for my Volvo V70. Looks exactly like Volvo original but 60eur for the pair instead of 200eur from the stealer... Same bushes on Volvo as on Mondeo mk4 and S-Max
Did they have the same, matt surface he talks about in the beginning? And, did they fit? Just bought a pair of aftermarket ones for my Mondeo. Believe they are identical to the ones for Volvo.
Rear end feels very loose and you can end up with the death wobble, when you'd drive along the rear starts to sway left and right especially at higher speeds
Richard Thornton Hi.. I checked the price the other week... they are about just under £30 per side inc vat. If you look at the comment left by badgertronix, he has left a link to some solid bushes where you don't need a tool to fit them but they are more expensive for the bushes. Thanks for the subscription
