Good informational video for any Mach-E drivers. Odd though, that just a precondition tab in the Ford Pass app is not just there. But hey, you never know if an update could change that.

Open the App, click Vehicle then click departure time to set a schedule.

Thank you for sharing this information. New to EVs here. So would the range recalculate once you drive off and the battery warms up further? I guess my concern, would that range improve as you continue to drive? Thank you for any feedback.

The range will somewhat continue to adjust up and down. The important thing is to watch your efficiency on the mil/kWh this would be closer to what you could really expect. When the battery was cold is was estimating 115miles / battery size (68kw)* state of charge (90%). So about 1.88 miles per kw. When warmed up 2.07. once you get to driving if it local neighborhood driving you'll get 3m/kwh. Highway probably closer to 2.4. factors come in.. How fast you drive, how high the HVAC is on etc.

It runs for about an hour typically on cold days. But set it at the time you want to leave, it will start when it needs to, to warm the battery and the cabin

there are the choices of Off, Cool, warm, medium. Cool warm medium, are those for the climate controls? if I set a time and set it to off does it still precondition without touching cabin temps?

In the preconditioning/departure time sections either in the app or the in car menu, you can get departure temperature (Cool, Medium, warm, off) "off" doesn't turn on the HVAC - only warms the battery pack. when using the remote start feature, the HVAC is either set to last used or auto - depending on what setting you selected on the in-car menu

@@zhugzug I would say, if your in a cold weather climate, set this to medium or high. The HVAC heater is a small 5wk PTC and can take time to actually warn the cabin. The benefit being (if you're plugged in) you're not using the battery to warm up the car.

Great tip. I have one question, can you precondition the battery without the charger plugged in or does the charger have to be plugged in?

Yes, in the app there's a toggle to allow precondition when not plugged in. I'm going to test how's much battery it would consume by doing so

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of getting the most range? You might get better range to not preheat the cabin if you've no access to level 2 plug

@@mrct309 not exactly..I think it will use less energy to precondition then drive, then it would to drive on a "cold" battery or even a remote start that has to heat the cabin in a short period of time. It's hard to prove exactly, but that's my assumption.

I have tried this several times, but the effect is pretty low. The preheating takes up to 7 kWh and is starting 30 to 40 minutes before departure on our home charger.

Go for a drive with the battery cold vs preconditioned you'll see a decent change improvement in miles/kWh.

@@EVandMe I did this very often when I am driving to my office. Its 40km away. There is not a big difference between preconditioning and normal starting without preheating. Yes of course the car is nice and warm, thats good. But I don´t get essentially more range. My range is always 186miles at the moment in my RWD with the big battery.

@@froehlichwl Obviously, so many factors come into play, but my last 100% estimate was 192 mile and I have the Standard Range Battery with AWD. I havent been doing much highway driving, i would say 150-170 would be typical for a standard range.

@@froehlichwl I am going to look at a small range Mach E and I live in buffalo NY so very cold. How long would it take to charge this ev at a level two charger from 10%-80%?

Curious now, what if you set two preconditions back to back say like 10pm and 11pm, would then range estimate jump to 135 miles?

No. The battery is already warm so it’s as efficient as it can be.

@@EVandMe But he was talking about doing the preconditioning twice before he drives it. Sure, when you drive it all of the other factors make adjustments to the range. Range listed is based on past driving experience.
