Late to the party but I think it's a case of knowing trying to do an impression would just be a big fail, instead just make it funny.

To be fair, Chevy isn't trying to do a Ford impression of any capacity (not his look, not his voice, nor his mannerisms or anything at all-- Chevy is basically playing himself).. but that's part of the joke. Also, Gerald Ford wasn't actually that clumsy; he just had a single on-camera incident of tumbling down the staircase of Air Force-1.. It's a common comedy technique to take a single characteristic and run it to absurdity.

I'm not American, or very old, but I've made a point of watching almost every SNL skit of every POTUS ever. Republicans, Democrats, they've had their asses handed to them satirically by the show and I've been in stitches almost every time. Chase, Ackroyd, Hartman, Pharoah, Armisen were fantastic. You could laugh easily back then - sure, these quirks and downright idiocies at times were hilarious. But now?? Baldwin is a fantastic Trump, but the jokes are writing themselves now that the clown is performing from INSIDE the White House.

Ford was a well-intentioned man but developed a reputation for being clumsy on his feet and with his words. During bis swearing-in as Vice President he flubbed a couple of the lines of the oath, and later as president he would always seem to be caught on camera tripping, falling or stumbling (e.g. on the ski slopes, coming down the stairs of Air Force One, etc.,)

70’s snl but still 70’s to 90’s snl was the gold standard for American comedy

he did his own show afterwards (Chevy Chase Show), and stared in a movie franchise (Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Vegas Vacation) centered around him playing the same comedy he did on snl. then was one of the main characters of "imo" the best shows ever made (Community) so what are you even on about?

He left Community after three years and was constantly combative with the cast and producers of the show. So what are you on about?
