I'm a semi retired electronic tech. This was very accurate. My wife's 1999 4.6 Liter Ford Expedition has an intermittent more annoying than really worrisome problem. it gets a little rough. it seems to affect shifting..but not always. Auto Zone scanner said it needed to have the DPFE replaced. I am not a parts replacer as such.. I want to know how something works and how it's designed. I now see why the EGR is so necessary.. It is a safety engenering part to prevent damage. I subscribed and rang the bell. I am going to your site.

Thank you for the kind words. If you are melting sensors and have a lot of pressure on the hoses, it usually means your catalytic convertor is restricted. I suggest getting the back pressure on the exhaust system tested. I hope this helps and stay in touch, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 11 лет назад
The specs for your DPFE should be the same as in the video, 1.0 volts. If the hoses are blowing off and get very hot it means the exhaust system is restricted. This usually means the catalytic convertor is plugged. To be sure have the back pressure on the exhaust checked. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

1. Disconnect the shift linkage at the transmission and move the linkage on the transmission by hand. If the transmission still won't engage, there is an internal transmission problem. 2. If the transmission does engage when moving the linkage manually, check for a problem with the shift lever or cable. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

@MsMlarrea 1. Inspect the connection of the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor for good contact to the sensor. 2. Check the Brown/White (BR/W) wire for 5.0 volts to the sensor when the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor signal reading is high, and, that the Grey/Red (GY/R) wire is a good ground. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 11 лет назад
Re-check the DPFE like it shows in the video. The hoses going to the DPFE are special heat resistance type. Be sure you are using the correct hose. If the hoses look like they have gotten hot or the DPFE looks a little melted, it means your catalytic convertor is restricted. Did you clean the tube going to the exhaust pipe? When you do make sure there is flow completely through. There is a small orifice inside the pipe that plugs. Stay in touch, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 11 лет назад
Check voltage of the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor. Normal voltage should be 0.5-1.2 volts Key On Engine Off (KOEO) or at idle. If voltage is out of range, check voltage again with the sensor disconnected, it should read 5.0 volts. If it does, and there is 5.0 volts measured between the Brown/White (BR/WT) and Grey/Red (GY/RD) wire, replace the sensor. Our largest customers are AutoZone and Carquest. Thanks, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 13 лет назад
@MsMlarrea 3. Check for a possible backpressure issue which may be damaging the sensor because of exhaust heat melting the sensor internally. To check this, connect a vacuum/pressure gauge to the DPFE sensor tube that connects to the sensors "HI" port. Monitor the reading while brake-torquing the engine. Backpressure should not exceed 2 PSI. 4. If the DPFE sensor connector is ok and there is not excessive exhaust backpressure, replace the DPFE sensor.

@IrnMaiden304 Yes they were aluminum cases. In fact we manufactured and sold the aluminum housing until the foundry stop producing them. Reason? On some application the plastic replacement needed a new wiring harness, we wanted to produce a direct replacement for as long as possible. the reason ford updates was because of RFI problems. We updated the circuitry but stayed with the aluminum housing as long as possible. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

Be sure to check the DPFE like I told you. 9 times out of 10 the P1407 is a defective DPFE. Also closely check the hoses coming up from the exhaust. If the Catalytic Converter is restricted the hoses will deform and crack. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

@svt0304cobra You have to get enough misfires in a certian time period to set a code. It might be right on the edge. 3. Disconnect the White hose from the vacuum control valve and plug it, connect a vacuum gauge to the port, and with the engine idling there should be at least 6.7" of vacuum. 4. Disconnect the EGR solenoid and apply power to one terminal and ground to the other, the solenoid should block any flow, remove the voltage and ground and vacuum should flow through the valve. It is common for the EGR solenoid to fail. Let me know please, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

It sounds like the catalytic convertor is restricted. Have you had the back pressure in the exhaust checked? One this you can do to do a quick check is remove the front O2 sensor(s). If there is an improvement , most likely the cats are plugged. Don't leave the O2s out for very long. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 3.5L and I have the P401 code. I already replaced the EGR valve and took off the manifold and cleaned all the ports. P401 still showing up. I bought a vacuum pump and tested the MAP sensor and with the key to on it read 5 v. I had the red lead on the green wire and black wire to ground. I squeezed the hand pump and went to 5,10, 15 units and voltage still 5 v. I assumed it was bad so I bought a new one. I tested the new one with same results.

The restricted EGR will not cause the engine to run richer. Too much EGR could cause this to happen. It is time to have the back pressure of the cats checked. Let me know what you find, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

1. Disconnect the green striped hose from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve with the engine warmed up and running. Rev the engine, the vacuum should increase to at least 3.9". 2. With a hand vacuum pump connected to the EGR, increase the vacuum to 8.7", the engine should stall or at least run real rough.

@svt0304cobra Fist check and clean the MAF sensor. If that does not take care of the problem, I would like to have you put it onto a scan tool. Check the misfire counts. If one or two are particularly high swap the coils on those cylinders and see if the misfire follows the coils. Let me know what you find, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 11 лет назад
If some of the ports are restricted, you will get excessive flow on the other open port(s). This is why I asked for the codes. When this occurs you will also most times get misfire codes. The fact that you opened the EGR at idle and only got rough running and not an engine kill, makes me think there is some restriction somewhere. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

Mark, I hooked the vacuum pump up to the EGR and with the engine revved it stayed at zero. When I increased the vacuum to 8.7 the engine did run rough. I disconnected the hose from the vacuum control valve and put on the vacuum pump and with the engine idling it read 6.5. With the EGR solenoid disconnected I'm not sure how to apply power to that solenoid. Please give me instructions on that.

It will range depending where the EGR flow is at. Here is a testing procedure.... SIMULATE THE DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FEEDBACK EGR SENSOR SIGNAL WITH A VACUUM PUMP Disconnect the downstream differential pressure feedback EGR sensor port hose at the ESM. Verify the hose and port are clear and free of obstructions. Connect a vacuum pump to the downstream differential pressure feedback EGR sensor port. Key ON, engine OFF. Access the PCM and monitor the DPFEGR PID. Apply 27 - 30 kPa (8 - 9 in-Hg) vacuum to the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor and hold for 10 seconds. Quickly release the vacuum. The DPFEGR PID voltage must be between 0.25 and 1.3 volts with the key ON and no vacuum applied. The DPFEGR PID voltage must increase to greater than 4 volts with the vacuum applied. The DPFEGR PID must drop to less than 1.5 volts in less than 3 seconds when the vacuum is released. ~Ryan

What code(S) are being set? The PFE sensor should have near one volt on one of the pins with it plugged in. Check it that way by back probing it with a pin. Your engine has small orifices above the intake valve that let the EGR gasses into the cylinder. It is common for these orifices to become blocked. What are the codes? Juan, you could hook the other lead up to the battery. I have a 92 ford taurus that has a problem with the transmission engaging. Periodlically when I drive it, then turn it off, then turn it back on again, it won't engage in reverse or drive even though the gear shift is moving the gears (It will move when pushed, in neutral). As well, sometimes when I am hainvg this problem, if I shift it into reverse first, back up then shift into drive it will move. ANY idea what is causing this??

Good video, concise. Holy crap...what annoying music, though. Just your good explanation will do! Head banging does not aid my thinking. Anyway, thanks for the video.

Hey Tbaby Dadon, no, you could have this unplugged and the car should still start and run. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

What does it read when it is connected to the sensor? What vehicle and engine size and code do you have? It could be normal. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

Hi Does a 4.0 litre v6 Ford Explorer year 2005 also have a DPFE sensor

Hi jbd desouze, your Explorer does not have a separate DPFE. It is built in with the EGR assembly and not replaceable separately. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

Tony, at this point you should probably take it to a shop. By the sounds of it, you have a pretty nasty coolant issue. If I were to guess...maybe head gaskets. I would definitely recommend taking this in and having it diagnosed. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

Hello. I bought a 2003 Ford Taurus SES 3.0 24 value dohc. The egr pressure sensor is cracked an right hose gone. I found it today looking for a vacuum leak because car runs rough. What problems would or will this cause. I'm not driving the car till I fix it. Great car low miles family one owner vehicle. Thank you for your time.

Without a functioning DPFE, the car will have a check engine light and will not pass emissions. These usually are a pretty easy fix. If the hoses are damaged or worn I would suggest replacing them as well. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

I believe your vehicle has a PFE sensor. I do have a video on this subject. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o8FRwzgOa6Y.html this is the link. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

Hi! it is normal to have 5volts in the signal wire? That reading is with the soket unplug and the key on, engine off. Thanks!

Does the voltage reading you give hold true for a 1999 5.4?
@GoTechTraining

Michael, I believe so. Most of the DPFE sensors on Fords used the same readings. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

On 2 occasions while testing the solenoid relay was clicking like crazy. Not sure if that means anything or has any control over the map sensor?

ok thanks Mark! Mmm do you know what typical voltage should be? The wires can be the problem too, what do you suggest? Thanks

So all of the wires probed on the dpfe sensor all need to be within the same dcv? I probed the first one and it came as .962 dcv, the second wire was at 26.9 dcv and the third wire was at 5.01dvc all of this was done with the key on the on position. Engine off

Hey Jancarlo, you are ready 26.9 volts on one wire? That is crazy high! Is this maybe a typo? What kind of vehicle are you working on? Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

my dfpe code is 327 on my 94 VIC . did it change for ODB II?
@GoTechTraining

Most of the old codes were 2 or 3 digits. When they went to OBD2 many codes changed. Did you need help diagnosing your DPFE?

+Wells Vehicle Electronics well I had a friend give me a new DPFE for free so I never confirmed with certainty it was the issue. But after replacing the CEL comes on as car starts but goes away with gas applied and back on when gas is released. Very few tools and equipment.

Same issue, Cat is restricted. Usually caused by either the engine is running rich or a misfire. If you need any further assistance, let me know, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics
